Jasper's Chick.JPGThis week's review took me to Plano, where I visited Jasper's in the Shops at Legacy. We'd love to read about your experience -- and your opinion of the reviews. Please let us know in a comment.

Frisco and Allen In-N-Out Burgers: "We're shooting for next week"

In-N-OutFrisco.JPGIn-N-OutDrive.JPGDoes it seem like it's taking forever for In-N-Out Burger to open its first Dallas-area stores, the ones in Frisco and Allen? Well, as you can see from these photos, the Frisco branch -- on the east side of Preston Road, just north of 121 -- is almost ready.

I just got off the phone with In-N-Out planning and development V.P. Carl Van Fleet, who told me, "It's been challenging because we're trying to get the two open together, and it's tricky." But here's the good news: "We're shooting for next week," he said. He would not commit to a day.

dragonfly dragon's den sized 2011.jpgWhen Hotel ZaZa's PR folks announced a new look for Dragonfly, they weren't kidding. What once resembled a dark, spectacularly eccentric boudoir now looks more like a modern brasserie with some eccentric touches (like the weird assortment of coppery-filament light-bulbs dangling between the main dining area and the bar).

The idea is to make the place less of a special-occasion scene and more for everyday dining and drinking. (Is this a recurring theme with restaurants, or what?) The restaurant has a new executive chef, Dan Landsberg and a new menu, too. (Leslie Brenner's blog post has more details and and includes a pic of the light-bulb feature.)

The Dragon's Den has been transformed into the lean, elegant room (above right), complete with quirky mascot mannequin. Look closely: He has no hands. Someone twisted them off and pocketed them.

Cedars Mediterranean Mezza closed

Cedars Mediterranean Mezza, which I reviewed here last year, has closed. The Preston Center location has a "for lease" sign in the window.

Maybe this is why: As someone who lives nearby and loves this kind of food, I really tried to like it, but stopped going some time ago. The menu and serving structure were confusing, and the portion sizes were out-sized.

The other problem was the ingredients. This, I think, is the plague of restaurants that rely on certain wholesale suppliers, rather than making the effort to source locally in season. Even in summer, Cedars' tomatoes were pale and flavorless, and tomatoes and other fresh vegetables are the bedrock of Mediterranean cuisine. These days, for my tabbouleh, I go to Shine's.

New in Town: Fin Sushi Lounge

The owners of Sushi Axiom have opened Fin Sushi Lounge at the Ilume mixed use development. The fusion menu includes dishes like spicy Thai beef salad, chicken sesame, dancing beef, a few nigiri sushi items including the usual suspects plus Japanese red snapper, striped bass, surf clam and uni, plus the longest list of crazy sushi rolls I think I've ever seen ("hidden dragon," "lady in red," "lone star," "Mt. Axiom"...). Plus "classic" sushi rolls like "Cajun devil," "Sunset," "Philadelphia"....I guess they're new classics.

Oh, and they have bluefin tuna toro, which their publicist tells me is the real thing. Is there anyone out there who still orders bluefin tuna?

It's open for lunch and dinner. There's no website yet.

What the stars mean: new web feature

Last week, when my review of Kuby's Sausage House went up online, we sensed some confusion about what the star ratings mean in our Morning News restaurant reviews. The Brad was kind enough to explain it to everyone (something we've done several times on Eats). Thank you, the Brad!

But it got us thinking -- there really should be an easier, more convenient way for you to refer to the meaning of our star ratings. Thanks to our ace web editor, Erika Nuñez, beginning today all new reviews will have a link in the info box to "What the stars mean" -- the same one we've long run every week in the print edition of Guide. You'll find it just under the star rating itself in the info box on the review. We hope you find this new feature (new to the web, that is) helpful! And now, back to this week's review.
