Road trip: Koffee Kup in Hico, Texas

So, what did you for Mother's Day? We took mom for a road trip to Dublin, Texas (more on that later) where my late grandmother lived. After paying our respects, we cruised through nearby Hico and had lunch at the famed Koffee Kup family restaurant.

Loved it, such a page out of small town Texas. We had a starter of hand-battered onion rings and then I moved on to chicken-fried chicken with gravy, broccoli, buttered corn, hot rolls and a slice of homemade chocolate meringue pie for dessert. (Followed by collapsing in the car.)

If you make ever make it out to visit, don't forget to check out Wiseman House Chocolates across the parking lot.

How did the food stack up? All hype? Better or worse than...say, Babe's?

@ Luniz: I would have to rank the chicken at Babe's higher (they've got it down to a science), but their restaurants are so noisy and over-stimulating that I hate going.

The food at Koffee Kup is basic, homey and honest. I think it is the overall package and folksy atmosphere that make it an appealing, comfort-food stop.

so jealous. so hungry. why did you post this, christopher, why why why

As a hunter who hunts in Hamilton county this place has great food. However, some years ago this place was called the Koffe Kup Kafe and there were rumors of the three K's having a meaning.

I heard that from more than a few different people who knew of that place. I have no proof nor am I saying that it's true, I'm simply stating a fact about the name and it being changed a few years back and that there were rumors. The food was good though and I had no problems while I ate there.

Never heard the KKK thing but I know people from there,I will check that out..

Christopher's report about the food is right on. It's a nice stop on a road trip, good food. I recommend their pies though. My personal favorites are the chocolate pie & banana/blueberry pie.

Hunter, I too remember when it was "Koffee Kup Kafe", and the KKK was prominent. Someone finally caught on to what they were saying and the name was shortened. I still wouldn't eat there.

Christopher,

If you like doing road trips, then you should take one to Stephenville to Jake & Dorothy's. They have been around since 1948 and have the best chicken fried steak I have even eaten. It is served with waffle fries and salad.

Isn't Dublin, Texas also known for selling Dr. Pepper made with sugar instead of corn syrup?

two Ks, three Ks, neither way.

I don't care what the food is like it just doesn't seem safe to frequent a place like that.

Must be the KKK influence. That place IS unsafe for openly gay couples. My partner and I had lunch there a few years back, and they indeed tried to kill us. If the humongous chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes didn't do it, then they force fed us the tallest piece of chocolate meringue pie I have ever eaten. And when we checked out, they forced us to take a whole pie with us. It was frightening. Sorry we missed the chocolate place across the street. That would have done us in, for sure. Yes, we'll be back.

And the comments have stooped to new lows. Maybe we can just go straight to Godwin's Law and get the comments closed.

As a small town raised Texan, and another Hamilton hunter, it is good but not great imho. Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls has better food, desert, and service.

thanks Chris

I'm still trying to figure out how my Mother's Day Koffee Kup post devolved into KKK accusations while I was off in a meeting.

very friendly place. The food is overrated imo.

First off...I am a brown skinned hispanic, I say this because there is lighter skinned mexicans that pass as white. I have been down there many times and yes I get stares once in a while but I can tell you that most of the folks down there are down home good folk. They will give you the shirt off their back if you need it. I went down to Dublin with gay girlfreind from Cali and she mentioned how offended she was about the confederate flag being flown outside an antique shop...I told her, "It's normal around here, and it's a part of the heritage of some of the people down here..." It's all a state of mind...you can chose to make what you want about whatever but in the end it's about how each one of us percieves the world around us. Remove the matrix that surrounds you...be free.

Chris,

Please tell me that you stopped by Stuart Veldhuizen's Texas Farmestead Cheese in Dublin to pick up some Bosque Blue, probably the best cheese in the state at the moment. His Paragon and Sharp Shooter cheeses are also excellent. Stuart is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and really cares about his craft.

My partner and I have been to Hico several times for weekend get aways. There is much to do, great shopping and the great Koffee Kup where we have always been treated very well. We are a gay couple, and the bikers traveling through town seem to have more of a problem than the locals did with us, probably because we were oogling the hot ones. There are some great B and B's there, shopping at Bliss and don't miss the Western Otter store. And Wiseman chocolates are the best we have ever had. Sorry, Godiva. We send them to friends all over the country who love them also. Hico is a great little country town with lots of "cowboy" heritage.

Chris, if you liked this, you need to try Mary's in Strawn. We were there this weekend after a ancester finding trek to Necessity. I'd love to know what you think. Hint - if you order a burger, be prepared to wait an additional 20 minutes--there's a reason for this!
