Has Oak Cliff's Kavala closed?

A coworker reports hearing that Kavala, chef Kelly Hightower's cozy little Mediterranean spot on West Davis, closed Saturday night. The news allegedly came from an employee of the restaurant.

I've called and emailed, but can't get a confirmation either way.

Anyone out there know anything?

UPDATE: Still nothing official from Hightower's camp, but readers have offered a variety of answers:

1. Anonymous writes: "Definitely closed. I was there Saturday night and they told everyone it was their last night to be open."

2. RestaurantLover says "JUST HEARD THAT KAVALA IS REOPENING!!!! DALLASITES (O.C. PEOPLE) LET'S NOT TAKE THIS PLACE FOR GRANTED."

3. On D's Sidedish blog, Annie suggests "It is closed - I went Saturday night and they told us as soon as we came in that they had limited food and free liquor as it was their last night to be open," but TexasKatey says "I drove by on my way home from the office -- a sign on the door says 'Kavala is on vacation. See you soon.'"

So, basically I'm more confused than ever.

Say it ain't so! I wonder if all of Kavala's customers migrated over to Bolsa.

IT IS CLOSED!! I GUESS OAK CLIFF CANNOT SUPPORT TOO MANY RESTAURANTS AT ONCE!?!? SAD SAD NEWS. WHAT A GREAT PLACE.

We went once in July '08 and even though the food was exceptional, we never went back because of the malfunctioning A/C at the time. If they are closed, I wish them luck in securing a new setting.

This is a surprise! Not only was the food very good, but they were always PACKED! What a blow to the neighborhood!!!!

Definitely closed. I was there Saturday night and they told everyone it was their last night to be open.

Oh no!! This was one of our "go to" places. Here's hoping it will magically open back up .. sometimes that happens

On a related note, I heard that 2900 closed last week .. any news on this?

We were there a week ago Saturday and it was packed at 7:30, and hopping. LOVE the place! Damn............

JUST HEARD THAT KAVALA IS REOPENING!!!! DALLASITES (O.C. PEOPLE) LET'S NOT TAKE THIS PLACE FOR GRANTED.

I heard in the past that the trouble was based on sales taxes not being paid, not lack of business. Of course, maybe they didn't pay sales tax because they were short on operational revenue. Can anyone confirm that>

Oh please, oh please, don't let it be closed! I just received a gift certificate to Kavala last week!

(crossing my fingers for a reopening)

Just got done a great meal there. Although they had no liquor, the food was great.
