GoBYO.com hits Dallas with BYOB options

There's a new online service that helps you find BYO-friendly restaurants in Dallas: www.GoBYO.com. The company that runs the Web site, DiningInfo, says BYOB is a growing trend, and the site does a good job with ferreting out BYOB spots in Dallas.

But here's the rub: It's more complicated than that in Texas.

According to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, restaurants with mixed-beverage licenses (where there are spirits, not just beer and wine) and private clubs (where you sign those memberships) are not allowed by law to offer BYOB (no uninvoiced alcoholic beverages may be on the premises).

Yet, many do. They're included on the Web site, and they openly display a corkage fee. One local restaurateur, who asked not to be named, said he is BYO-friendly only as a favor to good customers. When people bring in bottles, it cuts into his profit.

But really, who's going to catch him? A TABC agent would have to come into the restaurant just at the time a contraband bottle was being consumed - and further distinguish that it was contraband. Who's going to go that much trouble? What agency has the manpower or mandate to do that?

Here's the final question: When you BYOB, does your tip take into consideration the cost of the wine? Our restaurateur says it should.

Campania didn't used to have a corkage fee (at the West Village location at least), but this site says $5. True?

Yes Campania does have a $5 corkage fee in West Village. I can't vouch for how consistently it is enforced though. The challenge is always with large groups that order a bit of food but have LOTS of wine and linger at the tables - especially on the weekends when others are waiting. If we could have a "be cool" policy and have patrons give up their tables to others that are waiting, I'd rather do that.

Southlake has no corkage fee as we have full bars there.

Tipping should take the *cost* of the bottle into account? Now that's just silly. Why should it make any difference whatsoever? I just tip a buck or two extra, assuming they bring glasses and maybe offer to pour.

Ummm... love BYOB! Never thought to tip on the "cost" of the bottle... If I get a free meal I do add that back into the total and tip on that. But never thought that applied to the wine I brought... Probably get blasted by people in the "industry" but I don't feel bad about that...

I think that whether you tip on the wine or not depends on whether they provide a service around it. If they serve me my wine as if it were one they were selling, then a gratuity is in order. However, if they plop a couple of glasses down and/or treat a nice bottle of cab as if they are pouring iced tea just because they didn't get to charge you for it, then no tip is really in order.

I do really appreciate BYOB places and a new site to help find them is great!

I checked the website and there's lots of spots missing, in fact, they only showed two spots in the Lake Highalnds area, including Flavors (which we love) and several like Tony's and Tukta Thai are left out. Looks like I need to sign up and add info. After spending so much time in California, I've gotten spoiled by being able to bring wine if we choose.

Hi Cmarlin,

I would love to help you add restaurants to GoBYO.com! Here is our "Add a New Restaurant" link: http://gobyo.com/ADD/. Let me know if you have any other feedback at updates@dininginfo.com.

Thank you!

Cheers,
Devon
