Local nutrition consultant and registered dietitian Robin Plotkin joined the throngs who lined up at celebrity chef Tyler Florence's book signing at Central Market yesterday (she snapped the pic at right). Besides signing copies of Tyler Florence: Dinner at My Place (Meredith Books, $19.95), he talked for about 30 minutes about Sprout, his new organic baby-food line. Not surprisingly, Robin reports that most of the people there were mothers with kids in tow or mothers-to-be.
Robin asked Tyler how often he cooks at home, and he said every night he's not on the road. He told her he takes about eight trips a month. "The poor guy was sweating bullets," Robin writes. "He was wearing a green sweater (in honor of St. Pat's?) and did not take it off."
Meanwhile, Sprout Organic Baby Food comes in 3.5-ounce, shelf-stable packets. There are two "stages" to choose from: Stage 1 is for 6 months and up, composed mainly of single fruits and veggies, such as roasted butternut squash and roasted apples.
Stage 2 is for 7 months and up, and includes more combinations as well as some beans and starches. Examples include oatmeal with cinnamon-roasted apples, summer squash and Yukon Gold potatoes with parmesan and pasta with lentil Bolognese.
Robin asked Tyler if he felt like a caged animal doing these book signings, and "he gave a sly smile and did not answer verbally." Fame has its price.

I was there too. I think Tyler is fantastic! He does maintain a wonderful demeanor through the appearances. I always take the opportunity to ask him about his pup, Jake Bacon. Us Boston Terrier owners have to stick together!
P.S. He does Twitter a lot these days espcially during his appearances in Texas this past week.
Thanks for giving us a glimpse at the real Tyler! Glad Robin had the chance to talk to him " up close and personal!" I just love him and I think he has GREAT recipes.
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

I like Tyler, but Central Market creates a nightmare for their regular customers with these events. They need to find a way to shuffle everyone out of the main area and have special event parking off to the side. I found the whole thing inconsiderate to normal shoppers who weren't interested in baby food and were just there to try to shop.
