The locavore look at the new Lakewood Whole Foods Market

Almost immediately after we started our tour of the new Whole Foods Market in Lakewood this morning, the question came up: What is local to WFM, anyway?

For something like grapefruit, it's the Rio Grande Valley's Rio Star - because you can't get grapefruit grown any closer. And there will be red signs identifying local products.

But the meat department is where WFM is ramping up local. The stores now have pastured, grass-fed beef supplied by 15 Texas ranchers, according to spokesman Scott Simons. (I'm in the process of getting more details.)

The store will also be selling Texas-bred quail from a farmer close to Austin and in the fall - hopefully - Texas-bred lamb. Around the holidays, Simons expects to be stocking more local game birds.

Whole Foods Market also has its own fish-processing facilities, including one on the Gulf coast. (That's about as local as you can get with seafood in Texas.)

Locally produced items I spied on the recent look-see:

Philomena Food Co. (Dallas) frozen stuffed loaves and savory biscotti
Not just Lucky Layla Farms (Garland) yogurt, but "golden butter" that looked irresitible
Winning Recipe (Fort Worth) dressings such as 3 Mustard Wasabi Vinaigrette and Sweet Creamy Garlic Dressing)
A selection of brews from Real Ale Brewing Co. (Blanco), including Rio Blanco Pale Ale
Rahr & Sons (Fort Worth) "Ugly Pug" Black Lager
Abita Jockamo IPA (Abita Springs, La.)
Gloria's Premium Tortilla Co. (Fort Worth) Picante Sauce

The store also will have the Hill Country's Becker Vineyards 2007 Viognier on sale in the wine department, but Simons wouldn't reveal the price.

Comments

They had the Gloria's tortilla chips, too. I was very impressed with the store.

What this neighborhood needs more than a Whole Paycheck, er, Foods, is a grocery store where one might buy a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread for less than $14.

It has been interesting to watch the mix of outrage or love for Whole Foods move into my neighborhood. While I would like a closer Krogers or Tom Thumb I am very glad a company was willing to spend money to improve the retail store space in our area. The Minyards was dirty and dated and Whole Foods has done an excellent job with the space. We can all say thank you for that as well as the help on maintaining our property values. Maybe we can just hope that Far West closes at some point and then you can get your cheaper grocery chain.

Just FYI, the group of beef producers supplying local grass-fed beef is the Grassfed Livestock Alliance.
