First look: Lakewood Whole Foods Market

The key word at the new Whole Foods Market (opening Monday) is "more." The store is about one and a half times the size of the Greenville Avenue location it replaces, so there is more of everything, from wine to bulk bins. I spent a few minutes just looking around, trying to remember the Minyard that used to occupy that building, but this is a total redo, right up to the solar panels that dim the interior lights on sunny days. (Cool!)

The store has all the bells and whistles that other recent-vintage WFMs have. Read on for some highlights.

The considerable amount of local food items will be labeled with red signs. What's local? For salsa, that might mean from Dallas; for grapefruit, the Rio Grande Valley. They're big on Lucky Layla Farms dairy products, from Garland.
More bulk bins. One find that I'm going to try: mixed veggie chips, $7.49 a pound.
This is so Lakewood: One freezer case held boxes and boxes of breaded chicken nuggets. Yeah, the kids like 'em, but try making tacos with them sometime. (Flour tortillas, some shredded cabbage, your favorite dressing or salsa.)
When it's time to weigh your meat or seafood, a screen on the scale will display recipes using that product. Pick one, and they'll print out the recipe, complete with menu and wine suggestions.
Some areas that are coming on strong: Greek yogurt (try the Fage brand, the one with Greek honey in a separate compartment for mixing with the yogurt); gluten-free foods; and agave nectar.
Drive a hybrid or a fuel-efficient car? Help yourself to special parking spots.

See it for yourself on Monday. The store opens at 10 a.m., but festivities start at 9:30 a.m. They're promising lots of deals throughout the store that day. The store is at the intersection of Abrams and Gaston.
