Bill Addison going to Atlanta magazine

10:30 AM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |  |
Leslie Snyder/Editor    E-mail  |  News tips

I'm sad to say that our wonderful restaurant critic and dining editor, Bill Addison, will be leaving The Dallas Morning News at year's end for a great opportunity.

He'll return to his one-time home of Atlanta to be the dining editor and restaurant critic at Atlanta magazine.

A national search is under way for a critic to continue the great work Bill has done in critiquing the North Texas dining scene. Bill will assist in this search and still be here to lead the Best in DFW package on the year's new restaurants.

Read on for the official announcement:

It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that I announce that Bill Addison, The Dallas Morning News' award-winning restaurant critic and editor since February 2007, will be leaving at the end of the year to become dining editor and restaurant critic for Atlanta magazine. While this is a great opportunity for Bill, we will certainly miss him.

Bill has raised the bar on dining criticism in Dallas with his incisive and entertaining reviews in Guide, on GuideLive.com and the Eats blog, as well as in The Best in DFW dining series. In fact, we announced just last week that the Association of Food Journalists awarded Bill second place in their 2008 competition for restaurant criticism.

Bill's roots are on the East Coast and he previously worked in Atlanta as restaurant critic/food editor of Creative Loafing, Atlanta's largest alternative weekly. Before coming to The News, he was a food critic for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Bill will assist in the national search for a replacement to continue The News' focus on this important coverage area. All of us at The Dallas Morning News wish Bill the best as he returns to Atlanta.

Oh, no!! Bill will be sadly missed by me, and I'm sure, others as well. He definitely made great contributions as a critic and I valued his opinion. I'm sorry to see him go, but I only wish the best for him in his new endeavor. Let's hope he picks someone who can carry on in his footsteps.

Farewell to a worthy ex-competitor. The Dallas Morning News displayed a rare burst of verve by bringing on Mr. Addison accompanied by a strict anonymity clause, and the city is the better for it. His Guccis will be hard to fill. His spirit, impeccable integrity, and flourishes of lyrical prose will be greatly missed.

Bill, you will be missed. I enjoyed your articles, reviews and insights. I wish you the best in your new endeavor.

Oh, no!! Well, I guess I'll just have one more person to visit when I'm in Atlanta. Still, you've just been the best and I'm really going to miss your input. Please find us someone as wonderful as you! Dang. Now I'm all sad.

Congrats Mr. Addison! While I sometimes longed for the days of the Lunch Ladies articles and reviews of restaurants I can afford, I enjoyed reading your articles about the places I've only dreamed about dining at. Your fairness paired with your Anthony Bourdain-like worldliness was wonderful and made this southern belle wish she was eating sashimi right along side you at Stephen Pyles.

Note to DMN: How about hiring an average Joe or Jane to review Dallas restaurants? Would make it VERY entertaining!

Lucky Atlanta! Poor Dallas! Bill has been a breath of fresh air for the news, and as a colleague in the little world of restaurant reviewers, I will miss his impeccable analyses and witty write-ups. He is a rising star in this business, and I fully expect Atlanta will not be his final stop.--Pat Sharpe, Texas Monthly

RE:"Note to DMN: How about hiring an average Joe or Jane to review Dallas restaurants? Would make it VERY entertaining!"

That is NOT what Dallas needs at this time

bah. Now what? I guess DMN hired Addison in the first place, so they ought to be able to find somebody similarly qualified again. Good luck to you Bill. I'll miss your food insights as well as your excellent writing.

Oh and the "average Joe" idea...if that's what you want, read the second or third tier reviews.

2nd or 3rd tier? Average? I haven't noticed a whole lot of average around here. I'm average, not the DMN staff.

And I was just getting to the point where I was starting to enjoy and appreciate his work.
Oh well, easy come, easy go.
Good luck Bill. Atlanta is a great city.

Bill, Call Michael Bauer.

I'm not surprised his talent is leading him elsewhere but I am surprised he's going to Atlanta, a lesser market with a lesser restaurant scene. Atlanta is basically Dallas without the good fortune of being in Texas. I'd expect to see him in NY, SF, Chicago or with a national magazine. Hopefully, this is just a waypoint on the way to bigger and better things. We'll miss your enlightened viewpoint.

A knowledgeable critic and a superb writer is a tough combination to find. Goodbye, Bill. This Dallasite sure will miss you.

Not a fan of the average joe idea either.

Stinks of Belo losing their hides and losing decent writers.

Good luck Bill, I'm going to really miss your reviews!

Dallas was in dire need of someone with your globally educated palate, culinary venacular and $#^@! to give an honest review and say what needed to be said regardless of the restaurant owner/chef/price point (not to mention any names - [initials S.A.]). I'm going to trust you will leave us in good hands, thank you.....

All the best!

And just to set the record straight, the magazine approached Bill, not the other way around. It's been a pleasure and an inspiration working with you, Bill. I can remember only one other writer with your devotion and intensity, and that was Skip Bayless many moons ago, the sports writer brother of chef Rick Bayless. Rock on in Atlanta.

RE:"Note to DMN: How about hiring an average Joe or Jane to review Dallas restaurants? Would make it VERY entertaining!"

That is NOT what Dallas needs at this time

It's not what Dallas needs "at this time"? With high-dollar restaurants dropping like flies in this miserable economy, that is EXACTLY what Dallas needs - along with most of the rest of the country! Although they should also try and find someone of Mr. Addison's considerable skills for those of us who like to read about how the other half (or the other eighth) lives.

Please...no "Average Joe" replacement. Unless Belo wants to hire me? It's nice to actually learn something about food when you read a review, and you got that from Bill. Thanks Bill!

I am your average Jane and I do not want to read restaurant reviews written by someone like me. I read reviews to get the perspective of someone who loves, understands and has an intimate knowledge of food and drink. Knowledgeable reviewers, by the way, don't just do fine dining establishments. Bill himself did the cheaper ethnic restaurants at the San Fran Chronicle. There are a number of reviewers at the DMN who know their stuff and who cover the more affordable places.

Sorry, Bill.

You lost all credibility with me when you first arrived into town and downgraded Aurora to 4 stars on your first review. And I am sure it was just a publicity stunt to make a name for the new dining critic, but you were absolutely wrong.

At the time (several years ago), it was the finest dining experience in Dallas and the food and service were impeccable (I always had NO LESS THAN THREE servers in addtion to staff).

Anyways, good luck in the Cuilinary Mecca that is Atlanta.

Bill C.

Curious what your 5 star dining experience has been?

If at least one of them wasn't in Paris, or at least outside the US, within the last year then I believe YOUR comment has lost all credibility :+)

BILL WILL BE MISSED. HIRE CHRIS BUSK OF PALM BEACH TO REPLACE AND WONT MISS A BEAT . AT 561 827 2030 55OO MILITARY TRAIL SUITE 22 PMB 104 JUPITER FLA. 33458
