Know of a good local doughnut shop?

donut by Nathan Hunsinger.JPGSomething about the overcast, slightly cooler weather has set me to craving a good doughnut. Not Krispy Kreme -- fresh from the conveyor belt, they have their merit, but I'm sick of them. (No Dunkin Donuts, either.) I'd love a glazed cake donut with crunchy bits on the outside, but I'll remain open-minded, mostly because I've rarely heard mention of doughnuts in this town. I just peeked in John T. Edge's book, Donuts: An American Passion, and the only Texas doughnut shop he references is Hugo's in Houston.

Anyone have a favorite independent doughnut spot in the area worth checking out? I'll drive a ways if need be.

I almost hate to tell everyone this, because it'll just increase the competition for my favorites. But as far as I'm concerned, THE best mom-and-pop donut shop is in Far East Dallas, near Bishop Lynch High School and the venerable Dairy-Ette drive-in:

Oates Donuts
2215 Oates Drive
Dallas 75228
214-324-8989

I particularly love Oates' cinnamon-sugar raised doughnuts and the plain cake ones, but the chocolate-iced ones are excellent, too. If you do go by, Bill, go early -- they often have run out of my faves if I get there past 10 AM. And, like most family-run doughnut shops, they close at 12 noon.

That's good info J. Harris....thanks for the heads up....I drive by this place alot but would never think to give it a try.

I frequent Sweet Donuts in Richardson. Family owned/ran. Best apple fritter I've ever had, and their cake donuts are to die for. They also sell sausage kolaches (both spicey and not.) The place stays pretty busy in the mornings and their prices are very decent.

800 E Arapaho Rd
Richardson, TX 75081

Yummy Donuts on Lovers next to Park Cities Animal Hospital

the donut shop on the SW corner of skillman and mockingbird is my favorite donut shop. it's the epitome of a mom and pop shop. though the donuts are pretty standard fare, the pigs in a blanket may be the best in town. there is just something magical about the pastry that blankets those little sausages.

Jenny's Donuts
4112 Legacy Dr
Frisco, TX 75034

This makes it worth living in the burbs. They often sell out, the donuts are always fresh and they are the best I have ever had. They have a good variety of cake donuts and yeasted donut. The chocolate glazed cake donut is heavenly!

The best donuts in Allen can be found at Max's Donut Shop.

Mustang Donuts located at Hillcrest by SMU has the best glazed donuts I have ever had in my life

Uh, Round Rock Donuts. Duh.

Worth the drive to Austin, almost to Austin at least.

Without question, the best donuts on the planet are at Zak's Donuts in Richardson. The glazed donuts are the lightest you've ever had and the klobasneks (what most people mistakenly refer to as sausage kolaches) are a delight, especially the ones with peppers - be careful though, the peppers are usually very hot. Oh, and don't forget a bag of holes.

i agree about max's in allen. there is a shop at midway and trinity mills in carrollton on the sw corner that is really good too.

Malasadas are the way to go. Unfortantely, is only available in Oahu, Hawaii. Leonard's Bakery to be exact.

They are basically puff of donuts that are rolled in cinnamon sugar. Some natives in Hawaii also put Li Hing Mui powder on it. If you ever around the island make sure you stop by their bakery or they have mobile wagons that goes around the mall and around Pearl Harbor area.

Ingram's Donuts at Medallion Center at Abrams and Fisher Road. It's in an old bank building and you can drive through and get hot donuts. Yum!

Inwood Donuts on Inwood just north of Forest. They have the best glazed in town and great kolaches!

Yummy Donuts on Lovers Lane. They have the most unique donuts. Creative bunch. Love it!

Have to third the Yummy Donuts recommendation! Hae seen nothing else like them in the Metroplex.

Have to second the vote for Mustang Donuts, especially when the glazed donuts are fresh out of the oven.

J's Donuts at the NW corner of Lovers and Greenville have great donuts. Especially compared to the Krispy Kreme across the street. And their pigs in a blanket absolutely melt in your mouth.

Zak's Donuts on Arapaho Rd. definitely have THE best sausage kolache (klobasnek). Their donuts are also always fresh.
