Excellent news for those of us working in the restaurant-arid southwest corner of downtown: Cindi's New York Delicatessen opened yesterday at 306 S. Houston St., in the former Ferris Plaza restaurant site just north of Union Station and behind the Hotel Lawrence. Phone: 214-744-4745. We just called and were told the new Cindi's will be open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Like the other locations, it will serve breakfast all day, as well as a selection of sandwiches, salads, soups and hot entrees. We'll check it out for you tomorrow... UPDATE: Five of us went for lunch on Friday and were pleased to see that Cindi's quality remains intact at the downtown location. The menu looks to be the same one as at the other locations.
Everyone at our table was happy with varied dishes: egg salad sandwich, chicken and dumplings, Denver omelet, spinach omelet, salmon patties. The iced tea came with slices of lime, which I like even better than lemon. There's a small bakery case with pastries available. There is, in short, nothing not to like -- as long as you like down-home cooking or deli food. By 12:15 the restaurant was hopping, and soon diners occupied every table and booth. After 1 p.m. things started to clear out a bit, though. It's probably best to go for a sit-down lunch either before noon, or wait till after 1 or so, when tables begin to clear. Cindi's also has carryout; check their website and call ahead if you're in a hurry for a pickup. Judging by the quality of the food and the enthusiasm of the diners, I don't think this place is going to be hurting for business. E-mail entry: |

I got really excited when I saw this headline. Now, that I've read the article, I'm really jealous of you! That's a big long walk for me from the other end of downtown. Although, any quality addition to downtown is a bonus for us all!
Take the DART train over to Union Station, Margie! Seriously, this corner of downtown has been in dire need of some good, inexpensive places to eat lunch, or to pick up a quick to-go meal. There's almost nothing except a Subway within a five-minute walk. It's four-tenths of a mile to the West End from our building, and probably about the same to the Underground. The downtown Cindi's is not in a large building, but it has been remodeled nicely. And with steady business coming from the DMN, Channel 8 and the courthouses, I figure Cindi's will do just fine downtown.
