"No doubt," her ink-stained spouse snarks, "this stems from being just up the block from Sprinkles. Has anyone ever used the words 'gourmet' and 'Boston Market' in the same sentence before?" Heh heh. But apparently this is not simply a Sprinkles-related local phenomenon. Boston Market recently rolled out its new cupcakes nationwide, in two flavors: "Death By Chocolate" and "Neapolitan." (For the record, each is just under 3 ounces, with 320 calories and 14 total fat grams.) Have any Eatsians sampled these cupcakes yet? So far, the most detailed description I have seen on the web is from Ms. Ultraviolet, a blogger in Orange County, Calif., who says she liked the frosting better than the cupcake itself. For her take, read on: (Boston Market chocolate cupcake photo by Paula Light)
It's a very attractive cupcake -- just the right size, unlike some of those gourmet monsters. The frosting swirls symmetrically, and while I might have used a contrasting color of sprinkles, overall it's a lovely little thing, don't you agree? I'm giving it a "10" on curb appeal. The cake though was a disappointment. While it had a pleasant light and fluffy texture, the taste was very minimally chocolate. It gets an average score there. Onto the frosting -- excellent! This was somewhere between whipped and buttercream; I wish I could describe it better. It had no buttery taste, but was rich and satifying. At the same time it was light and creamy. How could that be? Magic?! It was full of choccy flavor as well. I'm giving it an "8." Why not more? Because I'm comparing it to the gourmet frostings, not Duncan Hines, and it has to really knock my socks off to get a "9" or "10." And I am prejudiced in favor of the sinfully rich buttercreamy frostings. |

I haven't tried them yet, but looooove their slices of chocolate cake. It truly is the best choc. cake around--moist, chocolatey, with smooth, gooey frosting. BTW, I think Sprinkles cupcakes are horrible--no flavor, dry and the frosting tastes like Crisco!

I think Ultraviolet Light has it right. These are the best cupcakes I ever tasted, and I'm not such a sweet-toothed person. I can usually hardly bear to chew on some chewing gum, including sugar-free. Still, these were pretty nice. Which is saying a lot.

Boston Market and "Gourmet". An oxymoron if there ever was one.
I thought they went out of business.
