And the new food critic at the Observer is ...

Dave Faries. He used to write the Burning Question column for the Dallas Observer and also alternate with Mark Stuertz on restaurant reviews. He left the Observer mid-2006, and has been living in Prague (yes, as in the Czech Republic), where he's been writing restaurant columns for the English-speaking paper, The Prague Post. Here's a recent example of his pithy review style.

I'll fill in details as I know more, but: Welcome back to the Dallas fun, Dave.

Good call! I enjoy Davie Faries almost as much as I've enjoyed reading Mark Stuertz. Any clue as to where Mark Stuertz is going?! I've been reading him since he wrote for The Met...

Verily verily I say unto you -- Thank God the Observer did NOT replace the seemingly irreplaceable Mark Stuertz with some mindless pinhead tool of a fool.

Big congrats and welcome back to Dallas Dave!

Dave Faries will be a hoot to read for you folks unfamiliar with his body of work or even his body for that matter...

Congratulations Dave and welcome home! We missed you.

Welcome Back Dave! Dallas missed you.

Dave, a much deserved congratulations and great to have you back in Dallas!!

dave, come on by for some scrapple...or some haggis...or some headcheese.

Let's hope Faries makes some new friends in the restaurant industry, rather than just writing about his old buddies.

Dear PDA, Dave Faries doesn't just write about his "buddies". He has gained respect from anyone who has been able to get to know him over the years. Dave keep up the good work! Nobody replaces Mark without knowing what they are doing and when to trust their gut instinct.

Al's right PDA -- Faries is quite open to meeting the new people of Dallas he hasn't had a chance to meet since he was away all this time in Siberia or wherever he was.

Word on the street was the Observer got rather tired of Daves cranky hangovers years back and sent him to the 'Russian Front' to presumably dry out and improve his "outlook on life" -- this is of course probably just a vicious rumor spread around by Chris Shull (formerly of the Met) or someone of his equally depraved ilk -- so take it for what its worth.

Glad to have you back Dave and lets keep up that good attitude this time around...

Just what the Observer needs, another pithy critic. Whatever sells...oh wait, it's a FREE paper!

From 1/3 of The Burning Question Crew to another 1/3 of The Burning Question Crew (and I see that the other 1/3 of the 3-part Burning Question Crew has already saluted your imminent, or should I say eminent?, return), welcome back.

Can't wait for the first gut-wrenching laugh from the funniest writer Dallas has seen in quite some time, if not ever.
