Arugula alert and Whole Foods menu ideas

Last night at the Lomo Alto Whole Foods Market, I found some distinctly different organic arugula. It's in the same old place in produce, but I could tell it was different the minute I saw it: The leaves were big and dark green, and some looked more like dandelion than the spicy green I love so much. This arugula was more like what you get fresh from the garden, with big, peppery flavor. Try it on burgers instead of lettuce.

While I was there, I also picked up The Whole Deal, sort of Whole Foods' version of an advertising flyer (24 pages). Worth checking out: the seven-day dinner planners for one, two and four and for entertaining on a budget. The Mediterranean Deviled Eggs (entertaining/budget), with capers, lemon and a teensy bit of anchovy, sound divine. So does the Blueberry Breakfast Bake, a cross between bread pudding and a fritatta, in the same plan.

There are also several pages of coupons at the center of the booklet. Hey, even WFM shoppers welcome ways to stretch their food dollars.

Our Biz colleague Brendan Case has the story:

Ms. Simpson will serve as a spokeswoman and appear in ads in stores for Stampede Light Plus, which is made by Dallas' Stampede Brewing Co. But she won't be just another pretty face: Ms. Simpson is taking a 15 percent stake in the brewer. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

A tempest in a cupcake pan

Sprinkles Cupcakes has taken exception to another company that's churning out cupcakes with its trademark "Modern Dot" topper. I couldn't find anything on the Famous Cupcakes site that looks like a Sprinkles cupcake, but whatever.
The dot is a genius design -- stylish, but simple to crank out.

Vignon makes Caesar salad wine-friendly

Pairing food and wine has been very much on my mind the past few days as I tasted through close to 75 wines (with lectures) at the Texas Sommelier Conference in Austin. I'm also wrapping up an article about Tim Hanni, one of America's first Masters of Wine and a professionally trained chef, and have been intrigued by a product his Napa Seasoning Co. makes.

Hanni is a man with several missions, among them making wine and food more compatible with flavor balancing. You could take a chef course at COPIA or the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley and learn what chefs learn. Or you could use Hanni's Vignon seasoning. Hanni maintains that umami is the missing ingredient in home cooks' repertoire for balancing flavors, which is why he created Vignon. I wrote about a convincing demonstration he did for some folks locally here.

What's all this leading up to?

Beer with breakfast? Why not?

Tina Danze weighs in on this week's beer find:

Woody Creek White

WHO LIKES IT: Mark Monfrey, Artisanal Beverage Co.

STYLE AND ORIGIN: A new seasonal Belgian-style white beer from Flying Dog Brewery in Colorado and named for a well-known bar in Aspen. True to the traditional style, coriander and orange peel give this wheat beer a refreshing flavor on the citrus side. The finish is crisp and clean. "There aren't very many of this style of beer brewed in the United States," Mr. Monfrey says.

THE PITCH: "This beer is perfect for hot weather - the dog days of summer. This would be a great beer with scrambled eggs. (Here's my new recipe: Fold basil pesto into soft scrambled eggs.) And why not beer with breakfast? Especially if it's a late breakfast shared with friends," Mr. Monfrey says.

GET SOME: A six-pack of 12-ounce bottles sells for about $8.99 at Whole Foods Market (Greenville Avenue and Arlington stores); Dallas Central Market; Sigel's; Goody Goody; Spirits in Deep Ellum; Majestic in Addison; S&K Beverage in Plano; Mr. G's in Plano; and Hall's Grocery in Colleyville.
