Restaurant Week: What about vegetarians?

3:30 PM Wed, Aug 13, 2008 |
Shannon Sutlief   E-mail   News tips

Eats reader Kevin asks, "Do any of the RW participants offer a vegetarian option?"

Clicking through our online menus, I've found a few: Trece's includes Chile Relleno Vegetariano, and Villa-O's includes Organic Vegetable Napolean (first course) and Organic Vegetable Lasagna (second course).

I've spotted a few other menu items that seem in name at least to be vegetarian. Of course, it's possible there's some lurking chicken stock, beef fat or fish sauce, but these are a start: Bijoux's Truffled Risotto, Central 214's Sweet Pea-Mushroom Risotto, Nana's Warm Soba Noodles with Chilled Vegetables (some of the first courses look veggie-friendly, too), Kenichi's Japanese Eggplant Dengaku, and the Second Floor's Wild Mushroom Risotto.

Are there any vegetarian Restaurant Week veterans out there? Help your fellow vegheads out, and give us the scoop on veggie-friendly dining.

Sigel's fire-sale wines reach two-buck chuck price

3:17 PM Wed, Aug 13, 2008 |
Kim Pierce   E-mail   News tips

Sigel's director of wine marketing Jasper Russo again sends a new list of restaurant wines that were not picked up and so are being deeply discounted at the Addison Sigel's (Inwood at Belt Line).

This time, we get down to a bottle for $1.99. That would be the Concha y Toro Cabernet-Merlot Frontera. It's not an expensive wine to begin with, but this is really a rock-bottom price. Sorry to see Poetico's Lorca Cabernet Sauvignon (Poetico's a local importer), but $7.49 is a killer price. A lot of the wines in this group are fairly inexpensive to begin with, but not all. Turnbull Meritage Black Label is $42.99 and normally retails for more than twice that.

Read on for the whole list.

You just can't get away from Rachael Ray...

Rachael Ray parody.jpg

...because the woman is, like, everywhere you look these days.

We suppose it was inevitable that somebody decided to have some fun at Rach's expense. The "unauthorized" (duh!) parody magazine Every Freaking! Day with Rachell Ray is made for those who trace the decline of the Food Network, of American cuisine, and perhaps indeed of Western civilization itself, right to RR's door.

OK, now, we're just kidding. We all know that poor Rachael -- er, make that rich Rachael -- is not to blame for all that stuff.

More likely, Sandra Lee is to blame. IJK!

Restaurant Week: Craft adds (part of) another week

2:48 PM Wed, Aug 13, 2008 |
Shannon Sutlief   E-mail   News tips

Though we were told that Craft in Victory Park was extending an extra week, it turns out it's only extending its participation through Aug. 22. Call now to get your reservations.

Eats reader M had this to say about a RW meal at there: "Craft was a really fantastic experience - the food was excellent and the service was stellar, if not a bit slow between the entrees and dessert. I'm not one to rush through a good meal, so that wasn't a big deal to me. There were a couple of changes to the Craft menu, though, but you have to be easy going when you are there for something like RW, I think. They changed the CM fourth course and the dessert on us, but still..everything was quite good. Craft did not disappoint."

Closed call with Kozy Kitchen

12:53 PM Wed, Aug 13, 2008 |
Kim Pierce   E-mail   News tips

I had downloaded the Kozy Kitchen menu for an out-of-town friend and was startled when I returned to the site, www.thekozy.net, to see a message that the site had been shut down. Sometimes that happens when sites are being redone, so I called the avant-healthy spot on McKinney. 'Got a recording.

With all the closures we've been having, I began to wonder if KK was yet another casualty. But a drive-by indicates otherwise. The Kozy gang is merely on vacation. They return Aug. 18 (Monday), according to a sign taped to the front door. As for the Web site, we'll see what happens when they get back.
