Restaurant squeeze means wine bargains at Sigel's

For those of you who don't understand how Texas' liquor laws work (this includes most of us), just trust me when I say, in simplest terms, restaurants in so-called dry areas must buy their wines through retailers like Sigel's.

In these hard times, some restaurants are not picking up their orders, and Sigel's Addison is basically selling the orphan wines at fire-sale prices.

Check out some of these (and even without vintages, you know these are bargains): Ceretto Barolo Zonchero for $18.99, Kangarilla Road Shiraz '04 - $7.99, Perrin Gigondas (Rhone) - $8.99, Long Estate Chardonnay - $13.49, and several Germans, including J.J. Prum Bernkasteler Alt Badstube Doctorberg Auslese for $14.99 (2/3 off the regular retail price).

Jump to the whole list. Everything's subject to prior sale and limited to stock on hand. 'Store's at 15003 Inwood Road.

There is no Twinkie like a book...

Here at the newspaper, we get so many food-related books every week that it's hard to imagine there being a culinary category left uncovered.

Today I got an email from Penguin's Alpha Books about their Complete Idiot's Guide® series, which includes several primers on food among some 450 sometimes-esoteric topics such as (I kid you not) The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Decoding Your Genes.

Now I can fully understand someone writing The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Sushi and Sashimi, The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Cheeses of the World and The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Vegan Cooking.

But The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Snack Cakes?

Is that really necessary?
