Man calls 911 over a Subway sandwich

OK, so this isn't local or of particular importance. But, here we go:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- The sauce for a spicy Italian sandwich was apparently a must have for one Florida man. The man, Reginald Peterson, called 911 twice after a sandwich shop left off the sauce.

Peterson initially called the emergency number Thursday so that officers could have his subs made correctly, according to a police report. The second call was to complain that police officers weren't arriving fast enough.

More of the Associated Press story here.

Blaine Staniford says Grace in Fort Worth

Blaine Staniford.jpgYes, a Dallas chef is heading to Cowtown. Blaine Staniford, ex of Tex-Asian spot Fuse and the recently defunct Scene, will be the executive chef at Grace in Fort Worth. The restaurant, which will serve "Modern American classic fare," is the brainchild of Adam Jones, who left Del Frisco's in 2006 to helm the project.

Jones said in a phone interview that he'd been interviewing chefs for a while. Staniford recently borrowed friend Scott Gottlich's kitchen at Bijoux and cooked Jones a six-course lunch there -- it landed him the job.

Jones aims to open Grace by the end of October, if all goes according to construction plans.

Join the crowd: Yet another food store on Coit Road - Bring your own bag

I've noticed yet another food store has appeared in my neighborhood. "Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage" has opened its doors in the strip center on the northwest corner of Coit and Campbell in Richardson. Grand opening is Sept. 6, but the soft open gave me a chance to ask the company one question: What were they thinking?

What am I referring to? Drive less than 2 miles north from this new store on Coit and you'll pass a SuperTarget, Sam's Club, Super Wal-Mart, and Central Market. Head 2 miles south and you pass a Tom Thumb, yet another Wal-Mart grocery, Kroger's, and Whole Foods Market. (And, btw, an intriguing Middle Eastern grocery called Zituna's on the west side of Coit a bit south of Arapaho that offers an amazing array of halal sausages and salamis, but I digress...) And Sprouts Farmers Market is close enough on Campbell that you could practically hit it with a rock.

So what's the niche for this new place? Actually, they have some pretty good answers. Head for the jump to find out.

When to buy organic

The Environmental Working Group ranks 45 produce items from highest pesticide load to lowest. Sad to say, peaches top the list, with the highest amount of pesticide.
Looking at the list, it's easy to develop your own mental cheat sheet. Things you eat whole -- peaches, apples and the like -- are more likely to contain pesticide residue than things you peel -- onions, avocados and pineapple, for instance.
Find out more here.

gert.jpgHe didn't win The Next Food Network Star, but that didn't stop the cable channel from giving Adam Gertler his own show, too. The Philadelphia native will debut Will Work for Food on Sept. 30, a show in which he will emark on a, "fearless journey to learn about a wide variety of unique food jobs," according to a news release sent out today.
"On The Next Food Network Star Adam exhibited a unique combination of quick wit, passion for food and an engaging personality," Bob Tuschman, Senior Vice President, Programming and Production for Food Network, said in the release. "He earned millions of fans across the country who have let us know that we have a second star in our midst."
Hmm. Seems like there's someone else in that final three that may be wondering when her show is going to debut.
