And the new chef at Shinsei is ...

Thomas "T.J." Lengnick, according to a very reliable source. (I'll confirm with Shinsei's owners tomorrow.) Lengnick was most recently the chef de cuisine at BLT Steak, and before that held positions at Nana and Pappas Bros. Steakhouse. Look for some changes to the menu in the near future. Shuji "Elvis" Sugawara remains in charge of the restaurant's sushi program.

Where has Ms. Casey Thompson gone? The rumor mill indicates that she will continue working in town, and that she's interviewing at one of the other restaurants where a locally well-known chef recently left. Stay tuned for more on that one.

Chicken-fried steak at the Koffee Kup at last

cfs - koffee kup.JPGThe Sig-O and I were already going to the Hill Country this weekend to help master sommelier Guy Stout harvest his syrah in Blanco.

So we decided to return via State Highway 281 and stop at Hico for chicken-fried steak at the Koffee Kup (left), which many of you recommended and some vowed was as good as the CFS at Mary's Cafe in Strawn that I wrote about here.

We made some stops along the way: A leisurely drive to Stonewall and Fredericksburg turned up a dozen stands along State Highway 290 where Hill Country peaches are still available, although the season's peak has passed.

As I write, I'm eating a peach of small stature but fiercely concentrated flavor that we got at the stand of George and Nelda Vogel, who brought buttery-rich peach cobbler to Stout Vineyards the night before. (The indoor part of the peach stand was perfumed with the aroma of another cobbler baking when we got there.)

Even though, it was lunchtime and we would pass a dozen Hill Country barbecue shacks along the way, we would save ourselves for the Koffee Kup.
