Watermelon as Viagra?

Those researchers at Texas A&M just don't have enough to do. They've discovered a substance in watermelon called citrulline that can trigger the production of arginine, which is similar to what happens with Viagra.

As they point out here, you'd have to eat six cups of watermelon to get an enough citrulline, and yellow-flesh watermelon is the best source. But once you eat six cups of watermelon, you're going to have another problem. Watermelon is a diuretic.

I've had a craving for watermelon lately, and I say there may be something to this article based on my own observation. However, I don't measure out my portion, therefore I don't know how much I'm eating. I read the article and it says that they're gonna try to see if they can reduce the sugar in watermelon. That's crazy--it's the trifecta of what a good watermelon is: cold, wet, sweet.

BIG question: what's up with people not being able to pick out a watermelon? I've run into so many people lately who say they don't know how to pick one. Someone should draft up an article this afternoon on how to pick a good one.

Joyce Saenz Harris wrote about selecting watermelons a few weeks ago in the Taste section. Here's the link: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/fea/taste/stories/DN-nf_watermelon_0618liv.ART.State.Edition1.145284a.html

When we stopped at a small roadside watermelon stand in Taylor, Texas a few years ago, the owner/watermelon farmer showed us the best way to find a really sweet watermelon. He told us to look for a melon that had the largest "yellow spot" on the bottom of the melon. This indicated that the melon was exposed to sunlight for a long period of time. insuring a sweet ripe melon. Another (odd) thing he advised, was to look for a lot of "scab" streaking. he said, that was an indication that the raccoons wanted to get into the melon. After all, he said, "the raccoons know which melons are the sweetest". The melon we selected using his sweetness criteria was without a doubt, the very best watermelon we ever ate.
