Sneak peek at Cowboy Chow

parfait_Cowboy_Chow_small.JPGMy man on the ground in Deep Ellum is none other than my son, Ric Martin, who works at Slocum Printing. He and photog friend Teresa Rafidi made it to Cowboy Chow yesterday, opening day for the old-timey Texas spot (open for lunch only in the short term, no liquor license yet).

That's the mashed potato parfait pictured, a layered concoction of brisket, mashed potatoes, "Cowboy caviar" (seasoned black beans) and red tortilla strips, in that order.
Verdict: yumelicious.

Doing this from memory, he told me they also sampled the Cowboy grilled cheese, brisket on Texas toast with horseradish-cheddar and sauteed onions served with killer house-made potato chips. Also on the menu, but not ready yesterday: Dr Pepper ribs and green tomato on a stick.

Amongst all this Lone Star comfort food and nostalgia, the items not to be missed, they said, were the Cowboy ice cream sandwich - and the restrooms.

Photo by Teresa Rafidi. More on Flickr here.

The Cowboy ice cream sandwich smooshed vanilla ice cream between two large house-made cookies: chocolate chip and chocolate-chocolate chip. Easily dessert for two or three.

Now, about the restrooms: There's a door for gents and a door for ladies, and they both lead to the same unisex wash area with four sinks separated by suspended mirrors. The business end of the restrooms are enclosed with doors.

Address?

It's at 2801 Commerce, Scott. And Ric says there's cheddar cheese in the mashed potato parfait, too.

The mashed potato parfait scares me. It looks like that squished-up mashed potato bowl thing from KFC.

Don't let the looks fool you on the mashed potato parfait. It is one of the best items on the menu. If we based food on looks there would be a lot of delectable foods out there that would of been passed over. Who would of ever thought to eat an oyster? Furthermore, nothing about Cowboy Chow says KFC.
