It may not be chili weather, but Tolbert's Texas chili is coming to town

tolbert 2.jpgThis just happens to be Frank X. Tolbert 2's chili. Which just happens to be the recipe his father, chili impresario Frank X. Tolbert, used at Tolbert's Chili Parlor (opened in 1976 on Main Street across from El Centro College, long gone).

Starting Friday, you'll be able to find A Bowl of Texas Red Pure Texas Chili by X2 in the freezer case of area Whole Foods Markets (16 ounces for $5.99). It meets all WFM specs, which means the beef is raised on a vegetarian diet without antibiotics or growth hormones, with care given to the animals' treatment.

Artist and chili cook X2 (left, wearing the logo from the chili container lid) has been working on this project for years, he says. The chili is going into all WFMs in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas.

How's it X2's recipe?

"I cooked all the chili there," says X2 of the famous chili parlor, "40 gallons a day." He says he pared the recipe down to single-batch size for his father's famous bowl of red. (The classic A Bowl of Red by X1 is still in print.)

When the weather was cold, even if it was snowing, the lines to Tolbert's Chili Parlor snaked out of the door and down the block. Don't ask me how I know.

For the record, X2's sister, Kathleen Tolbert Ryan, serves up authentic Tolbert chili at Tolbert's in Grapevine with the same recipe roots. X2 will be in town doing demos soon. I'll keep you posted on his schedule. Besides making killer chili, he'll make you LOL.

Tolberts restaurant in Grapevine is pretty cool, not just good food but a great atmosphere that is hard to find in the DFW area.

This product ROCKS! Try it with cheddar cheese and chopped onions and a little jalapenos if its not hot enough for you!

This is some serious chili - this isn't your grandmother's refrigerator-cleaning recipe.

I stir in some sour cream & chives to make this my ultimate chili.

Where can I get an X2 T-shirt?

The chili is on the back shelves in the meat section and its called a "Bowl of Red"- both stores have it. Its new this week so maybe the managers or whoever answered phone just didn't know. Its worth looking for! That, or its already sold out!!!!

One bowl of X2 left this body builder cut, ripped and
six packed. Highly recommend Shiner accompaniment.

Hello All!

Frank's chili hit our stores on July 11, and we've had a few folks who report having a hard time finding it.

It is frozen and will be located in our Meat Department frozen area, not in our regular frozen aisle, since it is a specialty meat product.

If you have problems findind it, please ask a Whole Foods Market team member and they will take you there!

This is some fine chili!
