A taste of Old San Juan and St. Croix

My husband and I just got back from our silver-anniversary trip to the Caribbean, our very first venture to the islands. We stuck to the U.S. territories, specifically Old San Juan (PR) and St. Croix (USVI), and we enjoyed some dandy food in both places.

We'll remember things like the gigantic Caribbean lobsters (above left) that we consumed by a seaside St. Croix sunset, and the sweet rolls called "mallorca" at the century-old bakery La Bombonera in Old San Juan (above right).

Probably our best all-around meals were a lunch at Cafe Puerto Rico (in OSJ) and our anniversary dinner at Bacchus (in Christiansted on St. Croix). The Creole-style shrimp-and-rice dish I had at Cafe Puerto Rico was perfect, simple and delicious. At Bacchus, I was blown away by the roast pork tenderloin with Cruzan rum-and-maple sauce, not to mention the perfectly sauced house-made ravioli (filled with mushrooms, sun-dried tomato and goat cheese).

In OSJ, we had Asian-style tapas at Dragonfly and comidas tipicas at El Jibarito and Raices. In St. Croix, we had good meals at Tutto Bene, Savant, Salud (best roast chicken ever) and RumRunners, plus a super mixed-fruit smoothie at a cool little Rasta juice bar called the Country Snack Stand, at the edge of the island's rainforest.

Also in the rainforest, we fed cans of nonalcoholic O'Douls to the famous beer-drinking pigs at the Mt. Pellier Domino Club. What can I say? I've never seen happier pigs.

BTW, we found out that chili-lovin' Texans are indeed everywhere, even in the steamy Caribbean.

The Virgin Pod is an official chapter of the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) in the USVI, started by the Texas Society, a group of Texas expats based in St. Thomas. Each August, the chiliheads hold a cookoff for charity, and the winner goes to CASI's big show in Terlingua.

The Virgin Islands cookoff usually draws from 30 to 50 entries. Because of the annual threat of hurricanes, the pod's slogan is: "Come Cook if You Dare." This year's event is to be held Aug. 17, at Brewer's Beach in St. Thomas.
