Favorite sushi spot in Dallas-Fort Worth?

3:22 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008 |  |
Bill Addison   E-mail   News tips

Zen Sushi 2.jpgSushi is the next subject we're exploring for our new series on Dallas-Fort Worth's best restaurants. Do you have a favorite sushi spot that stands out from the area's many, many options? Tell us what you love about it in the comments area below, or email us at dining@dallasnews.com. We'll publish some of these comments in a print version, which will appear in a future issue of Guide.

Admittedly, this was a hard category to narrow down for our critics' picks. We did a bit of extra research, revisiting a few places that hadn't been formally reviewed recently (or, in the case of Sushi Axiom in Fort Worth, not even formally reviewed yet). Ultimately, these eight stood out as examples of restaurants that serve pristine, often interesting varieties of fish. Their preparations respect the inherent simplicity of sushi and sashimi and also exhibit inventive but appropriate creativity with cooked Japanese dishes.

Our critics' selections are presented alphabetically, without ranking:

Nobu
A recent meal at the Dallas outpost of famed chef Nobu Matsuhisa's global restaurant empire wowed us. Among many standouts were ankimo (foie gras-like monkfish liver); a beautiful spread of sashimi including white tuna and suzuki (Japanese sea bass); and rock shrimp tempura in a creamy, spicy sauce. The room is dark and hip, and we're partial to sitting at the long sushi bar.

Shinsei
Shinsei's executive chef Casey Thompson found fame on last year's season of Top Chef, but chef Shuji "Elvis" Sugawara is the restaurant's sushi secret weapon. Among his specialties is the "Elvis Mack," a roll made with Spanish mackerel, yuzu, olive oil, shiso leaf and Japanese cucumber. He composes a gorgeous sashimi plate, too.

Sushi Axiom, Fort Worth
We recently checked out this place in anticipation of Sushi Axiom's new Dallas location. The menu includes a lovely array of fish varieties, some fun and not too over-the-top rolls and a couple traditional Japanese entrees like unagi don (smoked eel over rice). Sleek, sexily lighted interior.

Sushi Sake
This Richardson restaurant has established a well-deserved reputation as one of the area's most reliable sushi destinations. Its success could be attributed to the menu's smart diversity: Sushi generalist or thrill-seeker, everyone feels welcome. Request an order of the restaurant's delicious Japanese pickles.

Tei Tei
The sushi bar is literally center stage at this boisterous and perennial favorite. Order from the breadth of the menu here, including dishes (such as lobster and whole fish) cooked on the robata grill. The kitchen sometimes offers less common, seasonal Japanese fish for sushi and sashimi. Great sake selection.

Teppo
When Teppo first opened, it mostly specialized in sushi, sashimi and yakitori, the grilled skewers of chicken, duck and other meats. As the restaurant has matured, the daily changing list of seasonal small-plate specials has grown in prominence: Take your ordering cues from there. Teppo is a perennial destination for many of the city's most discerning palates.

Yutaka
Yutaka is that gratifying rarity: a Japanese restaurant that doesn't pander to perceived American tastes. Chef-owner Yutaka Yamato may employ some American-gained creative freedom in his cooking, but his philosophy and techniques originate tangibly from Japan. Start with the Japanese Antipasto, and quiz your server about specials.

Zen Sushi
You can order well from Zen's printed menu of sushi or sashimi, or choose from the creative cooked plates like miso-marinated black cod. But those in the know will tell you that the best way to order sushi is to put yourself in chef Michelle Carpenter's hands with an omakase meal of a dozen or so courses.

Yutaka is the best sushi in town. Always fresh, innovative rolls, beautiful presentation.

Posted by M@tt @ 8:15 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

The wife and I love Sushi Sake in Richardson! Excellent service along with some of the best sushi in the metroplex. For a place a bit off the beaten path and very casual, Sushi Sapparro in Allen is wonderful!

Posted by C. Evans @ 8:32 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

AWAJI in Plano by far THE BEST SUSHI in Dallas. Fresh and authentic. Puts the chain sushi spots to shame. (Like Samba and Ra.)

Posted by liz @ 9:08 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Yutaka is great! Always fresh and perfect very consistent. And very reasonably priced. I like Blue Fish a lot too. Definatley caters to the American taste but is usually fresh and good. They are a bit more moderately priced than nobu or tete.

Posted by DM @ 9:14 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Oishi!! My favorite sushi in Dallas by far. Fresh and fabulous quality.. very consistent.

Posted by Steele @ 9:16 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

For a nice, quiet, unassuming sushi experience, Oh Sushi on Northwest Hwy just west of 35 is the place to go.

If you like the high-end, upscale atmosphere, then you can't beat Chaucer's in Addison.

My favorite sushi spot is not on the list--and I'm going to keep it that way.

Posted by winnie @ 10:01 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Yutaka is the BEST sushi in Dallas. The fish is super fresh, the sushi rice is the perfect temperature and there is always something new and different to try(golden eye snapper or flying fish--YUMMY). This place is for TRUE sushi lovers!!! (Not to say that the Cali rolls aren't delicious.)

Posted by Droopydave @ 10:19 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Teppo by far. Go omakasi there sometime and see what you get.

Posted by Allison @ 10:29 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

I agree..Yutaka's is the best! I love the small, minimalist atmosphere- besides having the freshest sushi in town (love the crispy tuna roll) ... I don't agree with Chaucers, I have had a couple of bad experiences and would never recommend it.

Posted by lagniappe @ 10:29 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Yutaka is simply the best. I have lived in Pacific Ocean countries where the sushi literally jumps onto your plate and Yutaka is the only restaurant that has freshness, ingenuity and creativity that true sushi restaurants embody.

It's one of the few FABULOUS Dallas gems.

Posted by Sarah @ 11:22 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Little Katana!!

Posted by John John @ 11:45 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Oishii, Oishii, Oishii!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanh owns this town!!!

Posted by Tom @ 11:53 AM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Genroku in Richardson is my favorite. Popular spot for lunch or dinner. Great sushi, great service, casual and reasonably priced.

Posted by Joe Penland @ 12:02 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Oishii has the most consistently best, freshest, imaginative sushi I have found in Dallas and I have tried most of them - usually more than once. Could eat at Oishii every day!

Posted by forrest @ 12:14 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Alright sushi lovers ... Shinsei is greatness! Elvis is in fact a sushi master ... I would pick him first for dodgeball!

Posted by P Nicholson @ 12:15 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Sake Toro @ Frisco Square rocks! Worth the drive! KC (chef/owner) will make you a custom mouth-watering dish upon request. Best kept secret in town!

Posted by m2thej @ 12:16 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Oishii is fantastic for the freshest sashimi in town, hands down. I do love some of Little Katana's rolls, they are very creative and its fresh. Blue Fish has the Tuna Tower, so you can't imitate (although they try!)

Nobu is OK but a waste of money. Yukata is great too, but their sashimi isn't as fresh at Thahn's at Oishii!!

Sushi Sake in Richardson may as well serve carp. It's terrible and anyone who says differently clearly has never had good sushi.

Posted by sushi lover @ 12:43 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Love, Love, Love Elvis. Shinsei Rocks!!!!!!!

Posted by scarletto2772 @ 2:03 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

I am a Steel fan all the way. I can take die-hard sushi lovers here or squeamish newbies, and they'll both find something delicious and fresh to suit their palate. (Not to mention great cooked dishes if you just can't get someone to eat sushi at all.) Plus they have a happy hour on Wednesdays when the sushi is FREE. It doesn't get any better.

Posted by Andrew @ 2:21 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Keiichi is my favorite sushi place. It's small and hiden, but they know their stuff, and pick up their just flown-in fish at the airport every day.

Posted by M@tt @ 2:54 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

m2thej, i disagree with your comment about sushi sake and i disagree with your comment about people who like it, but what do i know? being as i am from japan and have only eaten sushi every week of my life..

Posted by Shelly @ 3:22 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Cowtown Sushi in Southlake is the best. Three tuna martini is a must!!

Posted by Audra @ 3:42 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

I second Sake Toro up in Frisco. It is a hidden gem in Frisco Square and should not be missed. KC knows his stuff and everything tastes amazing! It's totally worth the drive.

Posted by Cathy Miller McCoppin @ 3:43 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

I can't believe there are no comments about Mr. Sushi in Addison! My husband and I learned to eat sushi there 22 years ago and we've been eating there at least once a week ever since. The food is always top notch, prices are reasonable and the chefs are personable and excellent at what they do. Fish is always the freshest available, there's a broad variety to choose from and their specialties are just that--SPECIAL! If you've not tried it, trust me....it's worth the trip. Tell them Cathy sent you!

Posted by m2thej @ 5:04 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

M@tt, you dont' have to be from Japan to know good sushi- but thanks for trying. i respect your opinion for liking it, i've just had 3 horrific experiences with their sashimi, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I also have friends who have eaten there separately from me and also had horrible experiences. They aren't japanese, so clearly that's your issue with why we think it sucks. Not because it was the fishiest salmon I've ever tried.

Posted by Liz @ 5:05 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

I hesitate to mention it - I already have to wait for a table...

Sushiyama in an ugly little strip mall in Dallas near LBJ. Unassuming little joint, with mostly Japanese patrons.

Simple sahimi is $1 on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Posted by m2thej @ 5:05 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Oh and M@tt, I eat sushi about every other day

Posted by Lee @ 6:23 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

We love Steel!!! It is by far the best Sushi in Dallas! The fish is always fresh, and the rolls creative & delicious. We really like the Firecracker & Fuji rolls! Very friendly staff!

Posted by Anthony @ 8:39 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Mr. Sushi in Addison is the best Sushi in DFW PERIOD...

Posted by Ray @ 10:46 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

I have the same favorite as what Elbow listed.

Posted by William @ 11:29 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Can't believe Oishii is not on the critics list. It is the best sushi in town, period.

Posted by Tracy @ 11:41 PM Fri, Jun 06, 2008

Kenichi!! It might be expensive but the fresh fish it totally worth it...all these other places try to pass off their fish as fresh and it's not even close. The special sashimi's are so good. Ask them to make the yellowtail/serrano but with some kona kampachi, best dish ever. Plus, their sake list and sake flights are hands down the best selection in town!

I used to work for steel and would never eat there, ever...

Posted by Isaac @ 12:16 AM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Agree with Anthony. I've been going to Mr. Sushi for over 15 years. I've seen the same chefs and waitresses for over 10 years. now that is something you generally don't see at restaurants. It shows how great the atmosphere is there. The people there are really enjoyable, especially the sushi chefs.

Posted by Russ @ 12:17 AM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

MR. Sushi in Addison dominates: amazing food, great drinks and awesome specials. I never miss it.

Posted by duhuma @ 12:43 AM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Oishii Oishii Oishiii is the best sushi in town.(2525 wycliff ave)Yutaka is good, but Oishii freshest sashimi, sushi and rolls in town.

Posted by Travis @ 2:13 AM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

If you want consistantly outstanding Sushi that will make you crave it on a regular basis then the only place to go is Steel located in the Oaklawn area. AMAZING SUSHI with a very hip and trendy atmosphere. It is the best Sushi in Dallas and I have tried them all!!

Posted by nn @ 2:41 AM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Have to give some westside love. if you find yourself in Fort Worth, please please go to Wasabi. The place is wonderful the owners are fantastic. try their house Wasabi roll!

Posted by Joe @ 10:12 AM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

I have always been a Teppo fan and still think it's some of the best sushi I have ever had, but I am really happy to see Zen Sushi on the list too. Living in Oak Cliff, it's nice to have a creative and high quality sushi place nearby, and it doesn't come with the attitude of Kenichi, Nobu or other "see and be seen" places. I can go there in shorts or dressed up for a nice night out. Just watching Chef Carpenter do the zen roll thing with the sheet of cucumber is amazing.

Posted by Audrey @ 11:35 AM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

I love Cool Bamboo in Coppell
not too fancy or expensive, and a great place to go for a casual but delicious lunch or dinner

Posted by Albert Hirsch @ 12:10 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

If you have not tried Sushi @ Oishii, you should not be allowed to vote!

Posted by Steve Kaeppel @ 1:13 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

One of the best suburban places I have found is in Allen; Sapporo offers a variety of impecably fresh standards as well as seasonal items such as whole Aji (Horse Mackerel)which when served sashimi-style is layed out with the fillets and remaining bones together, artfully arranged on a lacquered platter. The server offered to take the bones back to the kitchen for a delightful finish of bone crackers, the bones lightly fried until crisp, rendering all remnants edible.

There are other delights that they offer regularly as well as twists on many old favorites, but everything is always outstandingly fresh and artfully prepared.

Posted by Stephen @ 2:44 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Sushi Rock in Plano has consistently turned out wonderfully fresh sushi for ten years. It is a family-run gem worth checking out even if you don't leave nearby.

Posted by fisheater @ 6:29 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Oishi is the best in Dallas

Posted by Elizabeth @ 6:44 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Piranha. Hands down the best. I drive from Dallas for their sushi. Kenzo rocks.

Posted by Robert Crowder @ 6:47 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

My favorite is Ku Sushi in the southwest corner of Forest and Preston near Mi Cucina. Delightful female owner, impeccably fresh sashimi with many specials and small enough to get to know you.

Posted by Jon @ 6:52 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Arlington has some nice sushi too! Piranha Killer Seafood in North Arlington, and Sushi Yaa is South Arlington. Great taste and great presentations.

Posted by Jamie @ 7:00 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Oishii definitely has the freshest Sushi in town, great prices, without the "see & be seen" atmosphere of some of the more expensive spots. (You might be shocked who you see there @ "off rush hours". Never had a better than average meal @ S S on Inwood...What's all the hype about? Abacus is excellent, if dining.

Posted by Nicholas Wilmer @ 7:05 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

I'm surprise Steel restaurant is not in here. I like all the places mentioned here but I think Steel is my favorite. The atmosphere and the dining experience is always very consistent and I like that. Their sashimi and sushi features are very imaginative but my all time favorite dish is their Chilean Sea Bass. It's a must try dish :-) Keep up the good work Steel!

Posted by Marci @ 7:22 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

I've been dining at Kempai Sushi in Addison Circle for the last 6 or so years....The sushi is always fresh...they have great specials (Monday is 1/2 price night!) Fred, the owner, always trys to make everyone feel like family...always warm and inviting. They have a great patio, too.

Posted by Michael @ 8:27 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Mr.Sushi in addison. Best sushi. and by sushi I mean tuna, salmon, eel, etc. California rolls are not real sushi. It's "American" sushi. If you go to Japan and try to order a California roll they are going to be confused.

Posted by Zack @ 10:47 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Nice try everyone. Sushi in DFW is pretty weak, and Nobu is the only top-tier option. It's fun to claim its overrated or played out, but...well..it's not.

Posted by Oscar R @ 11:06 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Oishii is more than a restaurant it is an experience. It is the Cheers of sushi. On The Border roll, Oishii Roll, and vocalno is the best. It is the best sushi in town, period.

Posted by CJ @ 11:12 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

If you want the best sushi in Dallas this is the spot. Best sushi place, atmosphere is great. The menu has a lot of variety. OISHII!!!!!

Posted by Vanessa @ 11:21 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

Oishii is the perfect local spot for great sushi. Definitely a great place to check out if you are in the neighborhood.

Posted by Hana @ 11:28 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

I've had the volcano roll at many place and no place makes it the same way chefs at OISHII does. It's AMAZING and I take people to the restaurant and make sure they try it! OISHII is best in DALLAS!

Posted by frank @ 11:58 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008

You can't go wrong with sushi at OISHII. I would HIGHLY recommend this to any sushi/asian food lover! P.S. You should try On The Border Roll.

Posted by Amy @ 12:08 AM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

Oishii is by far some of the freshest and best sushi I've had in Dallas! This is my favorite place to eat sushi. Than is the sushi chef and he is Grade A. His personality comes through in all aspects of the restaurant.

Posted by Patty @ 11:00 AM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

MR. SUSHI in Addison - by FAR the best sushi in Dallas.

Posted by Billy @ 11:09 AM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

Looks like oishii has a nice email list and fan club. But, if it gets its mark for a volcano roll and an "on the border roll", I think I'll pass. Teppo, Tei Tei, Nobu and Yutaka (of course) are the only places I take sushi lovers from out of town. Zen is nearby and it's good too.

Posted by twinwillow @ 12:58 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

My favorite sushi restaurant is mentioned above. I won't mention it myself because, it's hard enough getting a seat at the (large) sushi bar as it is.

Posted by Sharon @ 1:20 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

The Fish sushi is wonderful! The chef makes it right there at the sushi bar while you watch and you can see what you get. Also like the beef rolls.

Posted by Linda @ 1:47 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

Sushi is as good & maybe fresher at Oishii than Nobu & Abacus & high dollar Sushi Bars. $30-$35. @ Oishii cost $100.+ at others. Atmosphere not as fancy, but Shshi is the best!! I eat Sushi 3-5 times/week & always @ Oishii, unless dinner is a celebration & everyone wants an expensive restaurant. Oishii is a MUST TRY for all Sushi lovers!

Posted by Jack Tinsley @ 5:07 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

Definitely Tei Tei is first place by far, outstanding food and variety, and great atmosphere. A close second is Little Katana, both locations; always a good experience.
Shinsei is way too loud; very unpleasant experience.

Posted by fleet @ 9:03 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

mr. sushi in addison is awesome town

Posted by Hank @ 11:27 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008

I have been to four on the DMN list and Sushie Axiom in Fort Worth is the winner hands down. Try the Colonial roll. Piranha Killer in Arlington and downtown Fort Worth are also great places to eat sushi.

Posted by shane @ 6:01 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

I can't believe Simon's Sushi and Steele did not make the list, much better than Sushi Sake.

Posted by Doug @ 6:27 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Piranha Killer Sushi (Ft. Worth and Arlington)...it's worth the drive from anywhere in the Metroplex.

Posted by Ray pursley @ 8:14 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Toshio's at 100 S. Main St. in Duncanville has awsome sushi. It is prepared before your eyes, so its fresh and priced right.

Posted by Deborah Harvey @ 8:42 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

We love Ku at Preston/Forest. The food is always fresh, they have interesting rolls, and the absolute nicest people! It's definately worth a visit.

Posted by Æ @ 9:01 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Steel!!!

Posted by Nate @ 10:39 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Why some people are so amazed that the "sushi is prepared right before your eyes" still surprises me! Who has ever been to a Japanese/sushi restaurant where there was not an open sushi bar? You may not be seated at it, but at least you can see it at some point. If I can't see the sushi bar anywhere, I'll walk out.

And for the record, Tei Tei, Teppo, Zen, Shinsei, Oishii and Sushi Sake are tops on my list. Yutaka is also good from what I remember.

Posted by martin @ 10:50 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Sushi House on Lover's Lane...next to Rafa's Mexican....best sushi in Dallas and sweet people running it......

Posted by Spencer Stuart @ 10:58 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Simon's Sushi in Plano is not well known but one of the best in DFW - small - byo & family run - try the BTS!

Posted by Gi @ 11:05 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

I read all about these other sushi restaurants, but what about Steel? Not only the food is amazing, but the environment and service is fantastic! My favorite? Mexi Cali roll, and their Sea Bass. You will not regret....

Posted by Xenia Campbell @ 11:27 AM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

"Steel" hands down it's the best sushi in DFW. The food, atmosphere and service it's outstanding everytime. Not to mention the rolls, appetizer and cooked meals make it "the whole package" I can't believe it's not listed here...

Posted by Leslie @ 12:42 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Steel has the best sushi I've ever eaten in Dallas. Why weren't they on this list?

Posted by Mickey Kelly @ 12:53 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

It's great that everyone has their favorites. But I got to tell you that Steel has the best sushi in Dallas, in my opinion. It is always fresh and colorful. Sit in front of Chef Daniel for a treat. We always have a great time there.

Posted by DM @ 1:11 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Just to follow up, I was in no way responding to any emails re: Oishi.. its simply my favorite. Its the most consistently fresh fish I have tried in town. IMO, it preferable to Tei Tei, Nobu, Little Katana, and Steel-- by far. Especially when you consider price.

I don't do fancy rolls.. just pretty basic sashimi and sushi. That's what I love about Oishi. Well, that and their "summer roll" (or whatever season you're in--it changes names). Its salmon and crab rolled in cucumber, served with Ponzu sauce. Srumptious, but still pretty basic.

Posted by E Parsons @ 1:21 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Yeah, where is Steel ?? Steel is definitly the best sushi place in Big D, if you haven't tried it you are definitly missing something. The food is nothing less than awesome. In fact my son graduates tomorrow from PSHS and when asked where he wanted his "graduation dinner" with the family, he chose Steel in a second !!! We make the trip frequently from Plano to Steel, it's more than great food, it's and experience !!!

Posted by Nicole B @ 1:23 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

I agree, Steel has awesome sushi and is very cool to hang out with friends, we like the washbi table, it rocks.

Posted by Donna @ 1:35 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Sushi Sake for sashimi, Simon's Sushi for rolls. So what if foodies generally turn up their nose at rolls? This is Dallas, and Dallas loves rolls.

Posted by Miss Hollywood @ 1:56 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Why wasn't Steele on the list?
Steele is by far the best sushi
and ambience!

Posted by Victor @ 1:59 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Steel!! No question on this one.

Posted by Debra Dreyfuss @ 2:48 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

MR. SUSHI!!! we have been going there for 20+ years. always the freshest fish and definitely the best salad dressing of any restaurant in this city. good value, too.

Posted by Michael @ 3:05 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Mr Sushi--the best and freshest in town

Posted by Arnie @ 4:05 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

The best sushi in Dallas is Steel hands down! Great service, incredible atmosphere and amazing sushi.

Posted by Rita @ 4:22 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

I think Steel is the best suchi restaurant in Dallas. I travel all over the country for work and I never been to a restuarant that combines great food, drinks and ambiance!!! R/K

Posted by J.P. @ 4:29 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

As Dallas' only long standing sushi na (established local sushi house), it baffles me that Steel was snubbed. Not only is there a culture of real sushi tsu (sushi connoisseurs) from around the world that pay respect to the quality presented with in its walls, but Steel has always supported the Dallas art scene too! Where else in town can you enjoy a "real" sushi na experience in meat and potato land. Honor an original and quit lifting up posers.

Posted by Bill Addison @ 4:32 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Wow, Steel's PR machine seems to have really done a bang-up job putting the word out. Nice to see it has so many fans ...

Posted by B. COBEN @ 4:36 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Love, Love Mr. Sushi on Belt Line!!!
BEST SALAD! BEST SOUP!BEST SUSHI! FRIENDLY!
REASONABLE PRICING!!!

Posted by TC Wilde @ 4:37 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008

Steel should be listed above as it consistently serves fresh sushi and sashimi, offers innovative creations, and provides top-notch service in a cozy atmosphere. Steel is the best sushi restaurant in Dallas, hands-down.

Naan in Plano. Love it.

Oishii!!! the Cheers of sushi!!!You can't beat the sushi or the fun to be had at the sushi bar. Bring a date or find one there.

Posted by Steven Franco @ 12:23 AM Tue, Jun 10, 2008

Steel has always been my favorite sushi and sashimi retaurant in Dallas. After sushi eating all over the country it is nice to have the best in my own backyard. The atmophere is wonderful and serivce is impecable.

Posted by coco1101 @ 12:44 AM Tue, Jun 10, 2008

Oishii is my favorite! Not only is sushi GREAT, but lots of Asian dishes for "non-sushi" friends. In Addison, Mr. Sushi - the 1st Sushi Restaurant in D/FW - still excellent!

Posted by Audrea Weimer @ 6:53 AM Tue, Jun 10, 2008

Kenzoku is absolutely the best sushi in DFW. Located in an obscure location in Irving, it offers a hibachi grill and fabulous sushi bar. I love taking friends and colleagues there...they always leave satisfield and convinced!

Posted by Karen @ 6:54 AM Tue, Jun 10, 2008

Eastwind has the best sushi!! I lived in NYC for a few years and love sushi, eastwind in the quadrangle is the best, try it, you can even place an order to pick up and they put it together quickly and it looks great!

"Tommy" at Teppo might be the most underrated chef in town--I would place bets on him if he ever entered Iron Chef's Kitchen Stadium. His sushi and sashimi is outstanding (he had bonito last week, which was to die for), but it is his daily specials that really shine. See if you can get him to make purple fingerling potato soup for you and you'll know what I mean...

Favorite sushi spot in DFW...Steel

I love Steel. The Sushi is amazing!!! The Best in DFW. Fresh and beautiful environment. The staff is one of the best trained in Dallas. They all take pride in their service and the customers dining experience.

I didn't see Deep Sushi on the list. It's a small, quaint, and friendly place on Elm St in Deep Ellum.

I've tried Oishii before and while the food was good, the service was what left a bad taste in my mouth.

Not only does the Black Sea roll and salmon sashimi keep me coming back to Deep Sushi, it is by far the service. The staff is welcoming and always anticipate what I want before I ever look at the menu. In my opinion, Deep Sushi is the complete package!

Truly agree that all the above listed sushi houses are great, but I am amazed that the little- 80's style SUSHI ON MCKINNEY is not on the list! Yes it is small, hard to park in, and across from the obnoxious Knox Street Pub, but the service is one of the friendliest that I have ever had- and of course the sushi is amazing! Great food for sushi novice, but still creative and amazing for the sushi connoisseur!

Teppo Yakitori all the way! Their presentation is amazing and the food tastes so good. They have a good knack for subtleties throughout the dining experience there, ie the potato salad puff contrasting the hot saltiness of yakitori skewers. Top notch sushi too!!

By far the best sushi in Dallas can only be found at Oishi. Unfortunately, the word has gotten out and its popularity has grown. It is not a hidden jewel any longer. However, the volcano rolls are to die for and you must try the sea salt scallops. This restaurant definitely needs to be on this best of Dallas list!!

Sushi Sapporo in Allen, TX is hands down the best in the DFW area-fresh, imaginative, and affordable.

Teppo is the best sushi in Dallas - always fresh, delicious and there is a reason the wait is hours long! Hitomi is the best waitress at Teppo and the yakitori can't be beat!
Sushi Sake in Richardson and Mr. Sushi in Addison are teriffic also! Nobu is horrible - over-priced, awful service, fish wasn't even fresh on my multiple visits. Yutaka is good for lunch, but I haven't had a good experience at dinner and they never tell you the specials.

Sushi Sakana in Plano (Parker / Custer) has some of the tastiest and most creative rolls I have ever tasted for reasonable prices

Funny, I thought Oishi would go by the waist side. Gotta admit I love it (I think the chef was at Steel). Just recently discovered Sushi House on Lovers/Inwood. Very fresh and not crowded. Steel is great but the atmosphere's not for me. Simon's another good one. Blue Fish is good too. Sushi Sake is okay. My wife likes it better. Tei Tei is always good but expensive.

For value, I have to say Sushi House or my local haunt, Sushi Ichiban. Not the best but cinsiistent and decent prices!

Tei Tei and Teppo have been my picks since moving to Dallas. Always fresh and delicious with very pleasant and knowledgable service. For the past couple of years Yutaka has become my favorite, the same service and freshness as the other two, with addtional imagination that can be seen in the specials and the presentation.

I venture to Steel Restaurant with friends and colleagues quite often and it is truly one of the best sushi or dining places in Dallas. Good service, good food, good presentation. A couple of my favorites are the firecracker rolls and the Uni shots; very savory treats.

Clearly Dallas has some decent sushi places to choose from....who would have "thunk" it.

The problem with this on-going discussion of "my sushi joint is better than your sushi joint" is that sushi dining is a complex event. Yes the creativity and freshness of the product matters, but so does the amount of personalized service, as well as the sense of value and for some the ability to impress their dinner guest is important as well. Complicating this even more is that these variables can change from visit to visit. So what ultimately matters in the end is consistency and reliability. So the envelope please.....and the winners are Oishii, Yutaka, Tei Tei, Teppo, and Shinsei in that order.

Kotta Sushi in Frisco has the most personable staff and freshest fish.

Oishii is my favorite. I have been a regular for the last 5 years. It is the only place in Dallas I go for sushi. In fact I had to quit using my Visa because I really don't want to know how my I spend there.

Anyone who knows the difference from good sushi to great sushi will be fascinated to find some of the freshest fish at Kotta Sush
