Feeling a bit uncertain about tomatoes, given the recent salmonella outbreak that may be linked to toms? Wondering if buying locally grown at farmers markets is OK? Here's the skinny from food technology specialist Al Wagner, Ph.D., with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, who works with fresh produce. "I would feel comfortable at farmers markets," he says. "As long as I take them home and wash them properly, it's OK." The crucial issue with salmonella and tomatoes, he says, is whether the skin is broken. "Most of the time, the farmers are going to pick the fruit and bring it in," he says. They're not going to be running their tomatoes through commercial washers, which is where salmonella was an issue several years ago. Even then, the salmonella was only a problem if the skin of the fruit was broken so it could migrate inside.

I am 100% into buying local produce from local farmers .. I used to shop at the Dallas farmers market .. But since I have moved here to Ft Worth their idea of a farmers market is not the same concept as the Dallas Farmers market .... I wish Ft Worth would have one like Dallas ...
