Only a $10 budget to cook a healthy meal for a family of four? Ouch. And after they'd already used rice prominently in the Quickfire challenge? Brutal. I may try and do this challenge myself when I'm next on vacation. Obviously, that budget didn't include kitchen staples they were allowed to use - olive oil, salt, pepper, etc. But I was surprised how much food these folks procured at the grocery store (at Whole Paycheck, nonetheless) for 10 measly bucks. Must have been some good sales that week ... or some reality show trickery. Didn't Padma, Gail and Oprah Chef Guy AND Tom in the kitchen AND four kids eat that food? Suspect. Fun challenges last night, though, took things in a different direction. As someone who doesn't mind a little colorful language in the kitchen, even I was glad to see the chefs were around kids this episode so they weren't cussin' so much. Loved that one youngster who surprised Colicchio by knowing the term "sweating onions." Anyone out there know Colicchio personally? He seems like such a cranky bully on this show, more than ever this season. I can't help but hope he's a gentler soul in real life. We head right to the spoilers after the jump ... So, if you've watched this show for any length of time, you knew exactly who was going home tonight. It's never, ever a good sign when they start the show with one of the guys half-naked, shaving or getting ready for the day in a towel, while they pipe in a voice-over of this fellow talking about how much they wanna win this competition. Kiss o' death. Buh-bye, Mark. Note to future cheftestants: Don't be sloppy. Interesting this episode how Antonia (besides winning both challenges) was edited in a more favorable light than she had been previously. Also noteworthy that Antonia and Stephanie have sort of swapped positions in the competition: Stephanie's on the chopping block a lot these days. OK, who do I predict, at this stage, will make it to the final four? My boy Richard, of course. (Favorite line after working with Common Threads program kids: "I want to go home and make some babies ... some little Blaises." Heh.) Dale. Andrew might surprise us, he's bringing it more lately. And hmm - I was really hoping this would be a year for a female Top Chef. I was bummed to see Jen go home last week, I think she's got the goods as a cook. I'll wager that Stephanie makes a comeback and goes all the way. Tough call, though. Your thoughts at this point, gang? Next week: The dreaded Important Event challenge. And this isn't set in stone, but I have it on good authority that the finale is filmed in Puerto Rico ... |

It was definitely nice not to hear so many 'bleeps' during the show. I don't know if Stephanie has the confidence to carry her through though. She always looks petrified to me.

Yeah, but who then? Antonia wavers in her consistency, Lisa is certainly confident but her dishes don't always match her bravado, and Nikki is a total middle-of-the-road player who seems talented in her genre but may not be competition-winning material.

I was also wondering how in the world they fed that many people with $10 to spend at Whole Foods...did i miss something? 4 kids + judges ate for that much?

I met Chef Collicio at the Craft opening here in Dallas. He was very warm and jocular. Signed books, took pictures, and listened to me go on and on about my favorite Top Chef moments. I got the impression that he is a really great, laid back guy.
I think Top Chef is all business for him...

I'd probably pick Richard, but have to admit that I am not a devoted Top Chef viewer (though I have seen a fair amount of this season). The fish scale incident was pretty bad, but he has otherwise offered up some good eats and I like his personality best among those left.
