Oprah Winfrey goes vegan--temporarily

Apparently, Oprah's on a 21-day detox plan. It involves staying away from animal products, caffeine, alcohol, sugar and gluten. What will she eat? As you probably guessed, she'll be telling everyone. This time, it's by blogging.

she will have pulse known as veggies, water and friuts

Posted by Barrie @ 12:01 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Good for Oprah for exploring natural ways to increase her health! I was vegan for years, and felt really healthy, but it is a pain to have to carry tofu with you everywhere just to be sure you will get some protein.

Posted by Aniela Sanchez @ 12:04 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

That's great. I am always so encouraged by the things that Oprah puts out there for us. She has let us into her life so intimately for so long that she really is Americas dear close friend. Good Luck Oprah!!!

Posted by Cindy @ 12:04 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Good luck with that. I couldn't even do low carb! haha

Posted by shena @ 12:06 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Welcome to the life of an autism family. We avoid all that stuff, except my little one can eat organic meat thank goodness because she doesn't like beans. Go Ophrah!

Vegan is tough, but good for her. I would love the chance to help her make a program stick.

Posted by angel @ 12:09 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Well good luck and i hope it goes as planned as we are also on one ourselves to meet a plan .

I did this after I had my first baby, and the weight came off. Then I had no more of those cravings for sweets, and fried foods. All my mind and body wanted was fresh fruits and veggies. I did go back to eating meat. But cooked in the oven or on a grill. I lost 35 pounds, ALL of the baby weight in about 6 months. I also rollerblades while pushing my son in the stroller 5 times a week for 45 minutes. It works!

Posted by charles @ 12:12 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Atta Girl! Who better to bring awareness to the benefits and moral/ethical issues of animal and animal product consumption? Don't be surprised if she doesn't go back - or if Vegan is not for her, then some restriction on her dietary and consumer practices will remain in place. Yay!!!

Posted by My comment @ 12:14 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

She's doing a good thing. More people should be like Oprah Winfrey! She's my IDOL

Posted by George Sidoti @ 12:15 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Why only 21 days!...Stay on the vegan diet and enjoy life. Meat eaters take too much time to rest after they eat to digest their food.

Being a vegan can be the best thing anyone can do for the planet...

Posted by Laura Barroso @ 1:58 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

If I had like Oprah my personal Chef to prepare all my meals for me I
would be able to detox too!

Posted by George @ 1:59 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Big hype. Publicity stunt.

If she has to do a detox plan, she's not eating healthy as she claims.

If you want to live healthy then one should practice it every day, not when it suits your schedule or for the sake of ratings.

If anyone think that all these methods for the sake of good health can be done on a needed basis, they are fooling themselves.

So, good for but she shouldn't fool anyone that she's doing it for her health. As I said, it's a publicity stunt. More than likely, she's going to be promote a new book or about endorse some nutritionist or doctor.

Just a side note, detox is commonly done to cleanse the system when there are too much toxin in your system. It is not recommended for everyone as it can be more harmful than good. It can be a health risk to those who are not in proper health.
One should consult with your doctor and nutritionist before attempting any detox.

Posted by Dollars @ 2:24 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I think that's awesome! I went vegan for 2 yrs., then lost to much weight and had to pick up eating meat again.

She'll lose a ton of weight, and have to train herself how to eat properly, to keep healthy.

GOOD LUCK!!! :)

I am glad to hear this even if its only for twenty one days Eating animals is sinful and should be stopped by everyone. Look how upset she was when her dog died What about all the other animals that are slaughtered in a most horrific way Please Oprah show some more compassion to the world that has given you so much and stop eating poor helpless animals

Posted by skito bitch!! @ 2:28 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Oprah you need to stop. Becoming a vegan, for what! Its not a phase or some stupid fad. Its a way of life for people and by you going public saying your going to try it for a cetain amount of days is really an insult. Why dont you put your fame an money to better use like helping out some poor folks "without media coverage" your nothing more than a superfiscial rich bozo like all the other attetion loving and craving celebs..

P.S may God bless you all

Posted by Lisa @ 2:30 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I've done the same thing for a month! I did still eat fish, but limited myself to vegetables, fish, beans brown rice, organic cod pressed oil, soy and nuts. That was it. My seasonal allergies went away and I lost 9 lbs!

Posted by Daniella Dennenberg @ 2:43 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Way to embrace compassion in its highest form, Oprah! Thank you for setting such a positive example for others and for illustrating just how radiant and joyful a vegan lifestyle truly is.

For a humane world, Daniella Dennenberg

Posted by Caprice @ 3:06 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I have been thinking of doing the same thing.
I have been watching Dr. Oz and his shows
about the body and Dr. Gillian McKeith. The
people look so healthy after. She says your
body needs a rest when you put all the bad
foods in. Have you noticed when she shows the
food the person eats in the beginning is almost
always brown or gray. When she brings the
new food out, it is mostly green.
I figure it can't hurt to check it out. ")

All I have to say is AWESOME!! Go for all you want.

Posted by Fred @ 3:15 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Posted by Ma. fe Alitao @ 3:16 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

yes, detox is a must if one wants to stay healthy...and for Oprah that is a good move....

Posted by JW @ 3:16 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I think the program is called the 21 Day Detox

Posted by Roisin @ 3:24 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

She's hardly going vegan, is she? Vegans are allowed to eat gluten! But this is a great form of detox and once she gets into it, she's gonna find it hard to give it up!

Posted by J.J. @ 3:30 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Good for you. Oprah! I'm not a 'vegan' but been on veggie diet and stopped eating red meat (esp beef) for over 2 decades. And found out after that I can't make myself to swallow another red meat or steak!! It's STINK!!! You'll see.
Besides, w/ all the news we've been hearing... I can only say, I don't miss much and one less source of E-Coli or Mad Cow disease for me to worry about.

21 days.. you can do it, you go girl!

Posted by Irma Garza @ 3:32 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Hopefully Oprah will keep a thorough journal because I'm interested in doing the same thing. It will be nice to have an example to follow; with documented results. I greatly admire Oprah.

Posted by randell holloway @ 3:46 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

then i'll think i will just just meat and cheese, i was vegan for ten years and my body fell apart!! bone pain, gout, loose teeth, and constant fear! anyone who says this can;t happen never really went vegan. all i can say you will be able to smell her coming and going!

Posted by Jason Warr @ 3:48 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Why not just eat less and work out?

Posted by Jackie @ 3:49 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Good luck to her. I am allergic to wheat gluten and have found that most things that are vegan are NOT gluten free. But hell, you can do anything for 21 days right?

Posted by Valerie Chalcraft @ 3:59 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Awesome! I know she will feel and look great. I don't eat meat or sugar and am in great shape...

Posted by GABRIEL BOATENG-APPIAH @ 3:59 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I THINK IT'S A GOOD HEALTH PROLONGING STEP OPRAH HAS TAKEN. WE ALL NEED IT AT LEAST ONCE OR TWICE IN A YEAR.

Posted by Elliott @ 4:03 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Oprah is very smart. Vegans live about 15 years longer than meat eaters. Why? Read The China Study. In China, nobody ate animal products in the 1970s. Guess what -- nobody had cancer or heart disease either.

Posted by Max @ 4:12 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

that leaves her with bread and water .. hmmm i think vegetables too

Posted by Brandi @ 4:16 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I wonder how long this one will last.

Posted by L T George @ 4:23 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Through Oprah, many people will open their eyes that human health has a better chance of survival to a vegetarian diet. Furthermore, vegetarians and vegans are less likely to develop cancer. Thank you so much, Oprah! God speed!

Posted by Piera @ 4:29 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Who cares what Oprah's eating!! Oprah should embrace herself for who she is and what she has accomplished as a woman, a black woman. For someone who seems to be able to tell everyone how to live their life, she's very insecure about hers.

Posted by Toney @ 4:38 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

She looks as if she needs to if you ask me. Here lately she has really noticeable dark circles under her eyes.

Posted by phillip @ 4:39 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

What is Oprah upto? Remain young, health or slim?

Posted by Kehinde Brown @ 4:40 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Thats great oprah please keep it up, i know it good for you.

Posted by James Caiazza @ 4:41 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Who care's what she eat's. Are we that obsessed now, we need to know what people in the spotlight are eating. It is 5:40am and I've already had my Mcdonald's and I don't look anything like her. Alot skinnier.

Great for Oprah. I hope she makes it because everyone should detox themselves at some point in their lives. My church does this twice every year. Good luck Oprah and may GOD bless.

Posted by Lemmington @ 4:53 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I think Oprah is looking just fine, I am not so sure how she feels about it but its time she lived life, enjoyed every bit of the blessings she has, she is not looking unhealthy and maybe she should be sending a message to the women out there that its ok to look very healthy, its beauiful, you are beautiful Oprah!!!

Posted by Sharon Pate-Martin @ 4:54 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Hi Oprah,

The first two weeks without sugar, I lost ten pounds. My energy was up and best of all, my bones stop hurting. I've lost over 50 pounds.

Just a gimmick and besides, Oprah has gone over the edge..all this "NEW AGE" stuff.
She has lost her true self and her
grandmother's teachings! HOW SAD.....

Posted by Gregory S. Morse @ 5:03 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

What a great idea. Oprah has really stepped out and played big. Willing to open not only her eyes but al of ours. Go friend.

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years and I'm super healthy and easily slim. Being vegan is even better but seems to require more discipline than I currently have... I look forward to seeing how Oprah's health improves!

....SHE'LL FEEL BETTER FO A WHILE AND THEN BLOW UP AGAIN. jUST LIKE EVERY OTHER TIME SHE LOST WEIGHT OR GOT 'HEALTHIER'.
ANYTHING FOR RATINGS.

Good for her. It's always good to try something new. I've been interested in going Vegan. But I'm like what will I eat? So, I'll be reading her blog to see what she's eating and how she's doing.

She is probably doing this to jump start her weight loss that she has put on recently with her thyroid condition, best of luck to her.

From what I've read these are foods we should avoid on a permanant basis. I have tried to eliminate sugar and gluten, not easy.

Posted by Joe F. @ 5:16 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Sounds stark, although bleak may more accurately describe the resultant mood. I sort of understand the logic behind the caffeine, alcohol and sugar fast, but animal products and gluten aren't poisons.
My French forebears live, on average, longer by not skipping any of those life affirming substances. Maybe Oprah should take a five week vacation, and every day enjoy long lunches. Have three hour family dinners with smaller portions, several courses and wine. Make less money and spend time with family.

Posted by Jody Kenyon, MSW @ 5:19 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

As one of millions of American women across the US who struggle with weight, I feel that enough is enough when it comes to Oprah's latest. Time and again we see pictures of her losing and the plan, and then suddenly she needs to lose again because her weight has changed. She is setting a precedent for teens and women. The message is 'you can't succeed.'

Posted by lynn van @ 5:21 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Oh man, Oprah's going to feel great! and slim down.

Posted by Leslyn @ 5:22 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Interesting plan, I wonder about things like these, considering the body needs so much, hope it works, if it does, i'll try it

Weird. But she's famous, so she has to tell everyone, or risk a 'Razzi attack.

Yeah after watching her video's on her new religion I think she is going down the same path as Tom Cruise. She has lost it all together. I used to like her but I think all her money fame and fortune has gone to her head. So she is going vegan huh? She has battled her weight for as long as I have been alive. Well best of luck to her.

I'am very proud of my girl Oprah. If this is her way of losing the pounds then that's ok. Detoxing your body is hard, but with help from her Docter and friends she can do this. All I have to say now is full speed ahead Oprah.

DETOX what the heck... What I dont get is that people are living longer in this day and time. Why do we think we need to be detoxed? Don't eat packaged foods and stick to whole grains. Not too hard is it?

Posted by Jeff George @ 5:35 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

For what reason is Oprah doing this? She may be looking for extra power, I guess. Whatever the reason, she doesn't need to tell the whole world. She may be going through a kind of fasting. I do pray she that she meets with God in the process.

Goodluck, Oprah!

Posted by Tina @ 5:41 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

With all the decisions one has to make in a day. All the running around and work and kids and family and...and it is very hard to make a positive eating change alone in a household. I've done it. Lost 38 pounds. Gained them all back and some. Continue to walk 1 hour a day. But without my maid..housekeeper...chef..etc. I think it's almost impossible!! Off to morning yoga and work at 10. 7 p.m. will be a little late for dinner again when I get out. At 44 degrees outside I'll try and get my walk in. Maybe if I get real sick I'll lose some of it??? REAL life for me.

Here we go again whenever this woman does something everybody has to stop what their doing in their daily lives. Sad!

Posted by Louise Cardoza @ 5:55 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

I wish Oprah well and good luck. I have the same eating habits as Oprah and came upon the "Skinny B-----" book. I read it entirely and decided to try the vegan style. I was sure I would never eat meat, sugar, dairy, or anything that was bad for me after reading it. After 5 days, I was sick. My stomach hurt, I felt as if I were going to die. My mental state was frantic and I felt empty and concerned that I was actually depriving myself of necessary nutrition that I needed. I soon realized that my body does better with a little dairy and meat, even though I agree with the concept that it is bad for us and that we were all meant to only eat vegatables. As for the sugar, the nector is fabulous! I modified my milk intake and now drink a little 1% milk and my stomach does not hurt anymore. It helps me digest. I eat very little meat but enough to get my protein that I am used to. I conclude that when you are raised to eat dairy and meat, your body reacts better when you eat it. even though it is considered "bad for you". I do, however, eat only organic! That is a no-brainer! Go Oprah!!! Do what is right for your system, your body will tell you what you really need!

Fantastic choice Oprah ! Since my wife and I went vegetarian 15 years ago, and then vegan 6 years ago, we have felt excellent and enjoy better meals than ever. My wife is 43 years old, just gave birth to our first child, a beautiful baby boy, and the doctor was amazed how fantastic her abdominal area looked during the c-section. He exclaimed that there was no excess fat whatsoever lining the entire area (which is the precursor to heart disease and such), and that the insides of her tummy resembled that of a 20 year old. He is certain that it is due to her healthy vegan lifestyle. We were so happy to hear that great news.

Posted by faramola onaolapo @ 8:10 AM Fri, May 23, 2008

Well there is no big deal about that she can as well eat alot of vegetables which is readily avail. She would drink water it even more healthy that those drinks they are all Garbage.Ride on OPRAH STAY HEALTHY AND FIT.You need the bag under your eyes will melt away and the excess fat.

Does it seem a tiny bit weird that this topic has generated so many comments? Do foodies in DFW really care about Oprah that much? Evidently, they care more about Oprah than the normal food related topics because it's pretty rare to see 70 comments on anything. Odd.

Posted by Christy Robinson @ 1:32 PM Fri, May 23, 2008

Wow, I have to avoid gluten, and I choose to avoid beef. So I assumed I'd have nothing left if I tried to go vegan on top of gluten-free. Maybe not. This gives me something to think about.

Posted by Joyce Saenz Harris @ 10:13 AM Sat, May 24, 2008

Margie, the unexpected flood of "Oprah/vegan" comments came after Yahoo!News "buzzed" the original item, which gave it unusual prominence in the blogosphere. Overnight, we got hundreds of comments from readers. Many came from folks literally on the other side of the earth -- Africa and India! -- in addition to the usual comments from this hemisphere. So, foodies in DFW probably don't care THAT much about Oprah. But somebody sure does.

I've been on a vegan diet for over 2 years now and have never felt better in my life. In all this time I caught a cold only once, which in my case is a miracle, (I used to be over-sensitive and easily got sick), even that time I was back on my feet much faster that usual. I dont get stomach ache anymore, I dont feel "heavy" after a meal, and my annoying period cramps are almost completely gone. I see wonderful improvement in my skin, hair and nails. I used to get "cold hands and feet" often, but even that is gone now. My diet consists of vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains, mushrooms, potato, tofu, olives, rice/oat/soy milk, vegetables oils- mainly coldpressed olive oil, etc,,, I like soups and roasted veggies. But I had to learn to cook. Luckily there are so many tasty recipes on the net, and abundance of vegan cook books to keep me satisfied. (one of my favorites: The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen) I only wish I tried veganism sooner. There's no going back now! There's plenty information on the internet for those who are interested, like Vegan Society site, Vegalicious and The Post Punk Kitchen.
