Best steakhouses in Dallas?

4:34 PM Fri, May 09, 2008 |  |
Bill Addison   E-mail   News tips

Al Biernat'sHey, gang, we're launching a new dining feature to spotlight Dallas-Fort Worth's best restaurants.

Every two weeks, we'll present a list of top restaurants in one category (ranging from burgers to Thai and late-night joints to ice cream shops) selected by our squadron of dining critics. We're kicking it off with - what else in Dallas? - steakhouses.

But, as has become the tradition during the Eats blog's inaugural year, we're looking for your opinion, too. So let's hear it: What chophouse most sets your carnivorous heart atwitter?

Post your picks and feedback here. Or e-mail dining@dallasnews.com. We'll publish some of these comments in a print version, which will appear in a future issue of Guide.

Click the link below to read our picks.

Here are our critics' favorites. They are presented alphabetically, without ranking:

Al Biernat's
The charming owner makes the experience.
Favorite steaks: filet mignon of elk; bone-in, dry-aged New York strip.

BLT Steak
Swank, contemporary décor, and a great Lobster Cobb salad to start.
Favorite steaks: Prime bone-in rib eye and American Wagyu top cap.

Bob's Steak and Chop House
A perpetual hangout of powerbrokers and professional athletes, Bob's revels in the steakhouse classics.
Favorite steaks: Bone-in Kansas City strip, filet mignon.

Capital Grille
The muscular decor at this outpost of the upscale chain is equally matched by its heavyweight menu.
Steaks here are dry-aged Black Angus beef, prepared simply with salt and pepper or rubbed and sauced in a few luxurious ways.

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House
Del Frisco's was among the pioneers of chophouses along the Tollway north of LBJ Freeway and continues to flourish.
Favorite steaks: Classic cuts like rib eye and New York strip.

Morton's, the Steakhouse
This location of the nationwide chain still delivers on food and service.
Steaks are prime-grade beef and wet-aged, which imparts a silkiness that will thrill those who like their beef buttery.

Nick and Sam's
Discerning Uptown and Highland Park crowds cram this place nightly.
Favorite steaks: dry-aged cowboy rib eye and the chateaubriand for two.

Pappas Bros.
The Dallas outpost of Pappas Bros. Steakhouse elevates itself through extraordinary wine service.
Favorite food aspect of the restaurant: an in-house dry-aging program for the rib eyes and New York strips.

First trip to Bob's Lemmon Ave was a dissappointment; Capital Grille overall best dining experience; Plano Bob's had an incredible filet; Al Biernat's good but more atmosphere than super-top quality

Posted by carl @ 8:46 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

All the restaurants listed are wonderful, but Pappas Bros is tops! The food, service and wine selection make them the best. Al Biernat's and Del Frisco's run a close second and third.

Posted by RICHARD S POLLAK @ 8:52 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

IT'S KENNY'S IN ADDISON
WE WENT THERE FOR RESTAURANT WEEK AND HAD ONE OF THE BEST STEAKS YES, I ALSO GO TO BRAZILIAN STEAKHOUSES FOR THE ALL YOU CAN EAT BEEF BONANZAS AND I AM TAKING A VERY SPECIAL PERSON TONIGHT TO THE PALM
TO CELEBRATE OUR JOIN BIRTHDAYS

Steakhouse Comparison:
Best-(5) - Worst (1)
(5)Perry's cooks a great steak and has a casual atmosphere. Great place for women to eat a steak.
(4)If you are in real estate and want to close a big deal, Bob's and the Palm are great places known for the ambiance.
(4)Al Bernait's has great wine, a decent steak and is to open to be quaint.
(2) Fogo de Chao and Texas De Brazil salt the meats too much. Although buffet, you leave feeling like you are a piece of jerky.
(5) Del Frisco's cooks a great steak.
(3) Ruth Chris is too much of a franchise to be considered a competitor.
(5) As much as Papa's Bros spends on advertising they should be good.
(4) Nick & Sam's. The bone in ribeye is hard to beat.
Without a doubt the best steakhouse is Fort Griffin Steakhouse in Albany, Texas.

Posted by Darren @ 9:39 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

Perry's! I go there 2-3 times a month. Steaks are cooked to perfection, and their mac and cheese is to die for!

Posted by Sarah @ 9:54 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

Where is Perry's on your list? I love the bone-in ribeye at Nick & Sams, but the filet at Perry's is hard to beat.

Posted by Johnny Wayne @ 10:03 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

I find it hard to believe that Perry's is not on the critics' favorites. I have been dining there for years and the food is more consistent than any other place I patronize. The dark woods and subdued lighting lends it self to glamorous but snappy causal atmosphere. I rate them a 5 on a scale of 1 to 5.

Posted by Shawna @ 10:07 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

Absolute favorite is Del Frisco's ~ they really know how to cook a great steak and keep you coming back for more!

Posted by JB @ 10:10 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

I luv me some steak! Bob's overall has the best steak for the money. I've been to both locations and had great meals & service. I took my fiance there for his birthday (he'd never been), and his reaction was very similar to Melanie Griffin's famous restaurant scene from "When Harry Met Sally". Perrys, Al Bernait's, and Pappas (in that order) are my favs.

Posted by Katy @ 10:17 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

Capital Grille. Hands down!

Posted by Jerry @ 10:42 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

While not the best steakhouse, the best steak remains Del Frisco's. For years I've longed in vain for one of these spots and others to top Dels beef. I'm still waiting.

Posted by Jay Berman @ 11:23 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

Without hesitation Capital Grille is #1 in Dallas. If you live in the midcities Bob's Chophouse in Grapevine is #1. (Like it better than the Dallas location)

Posted by Steve @ 11:38 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

I have to say I've been everywhere, Nine, Bob's, Del Frisco's, Perry's, Kenny's, Ounce, BLT, etc. and nothing beats Nick and Sam's from top to bottom, hands down, the best.

Posted by Charlie Jones @ 11:44 AM Fri, May 09, 2008

Chamberlain's Chop House is the best for my money. I like the fact that it is the only truly chef driven steak house.

Posted by DS @ 12:01 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Perry's is by far the best I've been to. I travel alot and compare. Always come home to Perry's. Filet is like butter, service is awesome, atmosphere is comforting.

Posted by Steve @ 12:52 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Come on, to heck with the foo-foo steakhouses where you have to pay for salads and other stuff. Two of the best steak joints in the Metroplex are the Culpepper in Rockwall, and Ranchman's in Ponder (aka The Ponder Steakhouse, www.ranchman.com).

Posted by Heather @ 12:58 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

When I go to eat a nice steak somewhere and am paying more than I would at say...Outback...I don't want to see the Rangers playing on multiple TV's in the dining area, nor do I want to see teenagers in cutoff jean shorts and flip flops. This is what I experienced at the Plano Bob's. Great food, but ambiance is not what I expected. Lemmon/Wycliff is a different story. That is what I'd expect out of a steakhouse of that calibur, I've never had a meal less than extraordinary at that location. Al Biernat's and Perry's are my other picks, all rate #1 in different respects.

Posted by B @ 12:59 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Pappas!! No question. Only for special events though because it's pricey.

Posted by Chris D. @ 1:01 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I have been dining at Perry's for years and it is still one of my favorites.

Posted by Tim @ 1:06 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Del Frisco's - best steak

Nick & Sam's - Best Atmopshere

Silver Fox - Best Value

Posted by Mike @ 1:11 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I think it would be useful to post a list of the best AFFORDABLE steak houses.

Houstons and TLC get my "best value" vote. Outback and Texas Roadhouse are horrible at any price.

Ruth's Chris is excellent even if it is a franchise.

JB: Melanie Griffin?? You must mean Melanie Griffith. . . And she was NOT in When Harry Met Sally. That was Meg Ryan.

Posted by Red Moreland @ 1:12 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Del Frisco's was among the largest disappointments ever for us. The food was not up to the great hype I had always heard and the service was very slow. Smith & Wolensky's was another major disappointment. Lousy food.

The best steaks in town are at the Silver Fox in Grapevine. Outstanding food and fantastic service.

Posted by Kristine @ 1:17 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I'd have to say Del Frisco's is at the top of my list. I also really enjoy 3 Forks, although I haven't been there in years. Has the quality gone done? And, I wouldn't even list BLT Steak among those. The food was fine, but the service was sub-par for the price point. We'll never go back.

Posted by CKent @ 1:19 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Has anyone ever tried the Kona Crusted Ribeye at Capital Grille? I have read reviews all over the net and they say its fantastic. I'm dying to try it.

Bob's Cote De Boeuf is excellent!

Does N9NE even serve steaks? Have not heard one thing positive about the food!

Posted by Three Six @ 1:32 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Al Biernat's for all around food, ambience, drinks and wine. Bob's is number 2. I lunch alot at Perry's but never dinner. Given all the favorable comments, I'll have to try it. We used to like Morton's but have not been in years. Has anyone been there lately? It was among the first of the high-end steak houses in Dallas, and their original Chicago was great, at least it was a number of years back.

Posted by Tracy @ 1:40 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I eat at Capital Grille quite regularly for a casual night out and the food is always good. If I'm going to drop serious money, I definitely would choose Pappa Bros ribeye.

Posted by Thal @ 1:48 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Hands down - Pappas Bros. Steakhouse.

Not only do they have the best aged steak, but the au gratin potatoes are to DIE for!

Posted by Benard @ 1:54 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Capital Grille

Posted by Amy S @ 2:01 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Nick & Sam's Chateaubriand for Two - the best ever, worth the price. And it is so large it feeds a family of four for a week.

Chamberlain's if you are going with people who want something other than steak. His steaks are superb, but so are his other dishes.

Posted by M@tt @ 2:06 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

For my $ I will say the best overall dining experience is The Old Warsaw. Great Filet..

Posted by Jimbo @ 2:07 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

The bone in ribeye at Nick and Sam's is unbeatable. Pappa's covers their steaks in MSG...no good.

Posted by Brad @ 2:15 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks in Addison is my favorite steak place. The bone-in ribeye is heavenly, as is the famous III Forks salad and bacon-wrapped scallops.

Posted by Kevin @ 2:16 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I prefer Bob's, N&S, and Al's for convenient locations, but my objective choice for best steak in Dallas is Pappas.

Posted by Kim @ 2:16 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Where is Chamberlain's on your list? I have never had anything there that wasn't absolutely wonderful.

Posted by Shane @ 2:18 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

No doubt about it, Perry's is the best steak I have ever had!

Posted by Dodd @ 2:27 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

1. Park Cities Prime & Del Frisco's (tie, filets melt in your mouth).
2. Three Forks
3. Al Biernet's
4. Pappas
5. Lawry's (Nobody beats their Prime Rib although Houston's comes close).

I can't include Bob's in my top because my wife and I have gotten sick the past 3 times and a row eating there.

Posted by DT @ 2:30 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Why go to a steakhouse when you can go to Hirsch's Meat Market in Plano? I can get a 10 oz Prime Filet cut exactly how I want for $20. And I can cook/season it exactly the way I want! I will never spend my $$ at a steakhouse again!

Posted by L @ 2:31 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

What are you people talking about? III Forks is the best in Dallas and the is best "chef driven" (as stated in another comment). I met the Chef/Proprietor as he roamed the dining room visiting with people that just received their steaks...now that is personal service! I've been to Pappas and gotten overcooked steaks (5 of us out of a party of 6 - not good) and the next time I went a glass of $150 bottled wine spilled with just an "oops" to show for it not even an apology ...needless to say I won't go back. Capital Grille I do enjoy when I'm near the downtown area, if you go you have to get the Coconut Cream Pie it is absolutely unbelievable.

III Forks though is still the best.

Posted by ana luisa @ 2:34 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

All of these Steakhouses listed have aspects that are great (not including BLT). I like Bob's at Legacy, but my new favorite is the OUNCE in Addison. It's atmosphere is completely different, no Frank Sinatra, and the service has been great each time. I tried the Akaushi last time, and its the best steak I have ever had, far better than any Kobe beef.

Posted by Danny @ 2:36 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

5. Hibiscus - Go for the scene, stay for the meat.
4. Nick and Sam's - Ambience can't be beat and the wine list is tops.
3. Perry's - Just slightly below Bob's IMO on food and service, but just slightly.
2. Pappas's - Steak is on par with Bob's but the wine list lives in the expense account only range and the service is sometimes stuffy.
1. Bob's - Lemmon location. Its the boys club, it's the original. Consistently the best beef, service and a reasonable wine list.

Posted by Velvet @ 2:48 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Bob's, Del Frisco's, Pappas Bros - they're all really great steakhouses but I still think the best steak in town is the one I cook on my grill. Hmmm. Maybe I'll open my own place.

Posted by William Muckelroy @ 2:51 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Pappas Bros is #1 and Bob's in Frisco is #1a. Honorable mention to Nine in Frisco also.

Posted by Bob JackBoots @ 2:53 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Sizzler anyone?

Posted by cw @ 2:58 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Bob's is the best. Who couldn't love the carrot.

Posted by George @ 3:01 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Where is III Forks on the list? If I'm going to choose a steakhouse, I will ONLY eat somewhere that serves USDA Prime! III Forks is top notch and definitely needs to be added to this blog.

Posted by Bradley @ 3:02 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Leave Dallas and go west to the Fort Worth Del Frisco's. Best service, consistantly great food, and a comfortably elegant atmosphere. Also one of the top 3 wine lists in all of DFW.

Posted by Icee @ 3:02 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

What are the prices for Perry's?

Posted by tlr @ 3:14 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I enjoy III folks, steaks are great and the sides are included. Just dont sit out by the patio water fall, its annoying

Posted by Gregg in Plano @ 3:17 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Pappas is the clear winner, while probably the most expensive too. A lot of people don't like Ruth Chris...I do!

Posted by Carolyn B @ 3:20 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

For me it's a tossup between Morton's and Pappas. Morton's wins for atmosphere, though.

Posted by Cherise @ 3:30 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Perry's is definitely the best steak house in Dallas! The quality is very consistent and the steak is always cooked to perfection. Don't miss the fabulous calamari and macaroni & cheese!!

Posted by bob batts @ 3:31 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

All great suggestions. I would also have to include the filet from Sullivan's Steakhouse in Addison. I prefer their filet with wedge salad over any of their other cuts.

B Batts

Posted by Jeremy @ 3:46 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Nick & Sam's wins everytime with the Prime-Aged Bone In Filet. Best steak I've ever had, and i've been to almost every steakhouse in Dallas multiple times.

Al Biernat's is a close second with their Dry Aged Prime Bone-In New York Strip. Very tasty.

Atmosphere at both restaurants is extremely vibrant and friendly.

Posted by bill @ 3:51 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks is the best pick. Chef Chris Vogeli is the unassuming master of steaks - 100% USDA Prime. Ten years and still going strong!

Posted by steve @ 3:58 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Silver Fox in Grapevine.

Posted by Marci @ 4:04 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I've been just about everywhere....

III Forks - Great seasoning, always cooked perfectly and the service is outstanding...
Del Friscos - mmmm creamed spinach. I remember that more than the steaks.
Bob's - one of my top two. The steaks are amazing, the bread is wonderful
BLT - any place that serves popovers with ROOM TEMP butter has my heart. lol

Ounce - BEST prime rib i've ever had. Hands down better than Lawry's. They also serve Akaushi here...and it's probably the best steak I've ever tasted. Buttery..melts in your mouth!

Posted by Jeff @ 4:12 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I go to Bob's, Del Frisco's, and III Forks all the time. My favorite is which ever one I went to last.

Posted by Stacey @ 4:15 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I love Del Frisco's. The steaks are great and so are the appetizers and sides. However, the best steak I've ever had is at Morton's. Perfection, I love the atmosphere. I feel like Frank Sinatra may be walking in the door at any minute. Papas is OK, but I don't think it's up to par with Del's or Mortons. Never been to Nick and Sam's, will have to check it out. Also, if it's even still there. The T-Bone in the Renisainse Hotel used to be good.

Posted by Kelly @ 4:18 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

The best steak and food/service in Dallas is JR's Steakhouse in Colleyville.

If you have not been, you are seriously missing the boat.

I have eaten at all of the steakhouses listed and none of these compare to JR's.

The Wild Catter steakhouse in Graham, TX near Possum Kingdom lake is also an incredible find.

Posted by maddie @ 4:19 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I love III Forks. The best filet, awesome cream corn and an inspired wine list. No need to parse the menu. It's all USDA Prime.

Posted by Scott @ 4:21 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Best steak? Right here. Two Saturdays a month with the grill on the shared driveway between us and our next door neighbor. I do the steaks they do the sides. No one else compares. Dee Lincoln and Dave Wamsted bring on your best chefs I'll beat 'em hands down!

Posted by E G Adams @ 4:24 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

There are a few of us retired gents that cannot afford pricey steaks such as Perrys or Pappas. But for a reasonable steak at a reasonable price - try the Ribeye at Tupinamba on Inwood. Good food, Good service, Relaxing family atmosphere. It fits my SS income with a very up-scale beat for the money

Posted by TB @ 4:26 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Nove Italiano in Victory has a heck of a ribeye...probably the best I've ever had. I believe they share a kitchen with N9NE (same company).

On par with the best in Dallas.

If you want the most "interesting" steak, get the Cowboy Cut at Nick & Sams...you'll love it, and you get a nice 2ft long treat to take home to Fido also.

Posted by TLH @ 4:27 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks! Food, service and atmosphere are all superb. This is where I go when I want to be pampered.

Posted by Laura @ 4:30 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Head north to Steve Field's Steak & Lobster Lounge in Plano. It beats all the other big name places. Food is superb. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and unpretentious. This is the best deal in town when it comes to a great steak dinner!

Posted by Roy @ 4:31 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks is the best steakhouse in the Metroplex. None better.

Posted by Greg @ 4:32 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I can't believe III Forks was not on the list. It is the only place I have always had the best service. The bone-in filet was perfect last week. If you like something closer to downtown, then Al Biernet's is a great alternative, they have a really cool bar scene.

Posted by Denise @ 4:34 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks is the best place to get a steak in Dallas! The food and service are fabulous every time. I love the "juice" you get at the end of the meal - yum!

Posted by James @ 4:38 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I agree with everyone who says III Forks is the best. My understanding is they are in the top 100 restaurants in the U.S. None of the others on your list can make that claim.

Posted by Kate @ 4:39 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks gets my vote for flawless professional service and perfect steak. Been there many times and every experience has been excellent. I recommend the ribeye. Al Biernat's and Perry's are worth mentioning, but are not quite as consistent.

Posted by bw @ 4:46 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Also shocked at the omission of III Forks. Service is outstanding, and the thought of the creamed corn is making me drool all over the keyboard.

Posted by rico @ 4:48 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Chamberlain's...it's nice to see the man who the restaurant is named for come out of the kitchen...no hype, no pretense, just great food...

Posted by Beck @ 4:51 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I love the steakhouses that are mentioned. Perry's, Chamberlains, the Palm, Ounce and III Forks should be included. Sullivans isn't too bad. I love Kenny's but I don't consider that a "steakhouse". I also enjoyed the filet at Charlie Palmer at the Joule, although the Dallas location is not really considered one of his steakhouses. Great wine selection as well - love the wine shop next door.

Posted by Robert Dillon @ 4:52 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks is by far the best in value, style and taste.

Posted by Luis @ 4:57 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III forks dallas is the best steakhouse, not only in taste but in service. Honestly to have a superior dinning experience I would recomend it to anyone.

Posted by Suzanne @ 5:04 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

JR's in Colleyville. Get over there and try this place!

Posted by Kalyn Asher @ 5:08 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III FORKS is the BEST from the steaks to salads to seafood and overall service and experience. I'm going tonight!

Posted by LT @ 5:13 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I love steak ,and in Nyc we have the best. However in Dallas the place to go is III FORKS by far the best and most consistent.

Posted by S.Vale @ 5:18 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

I've been to just about every steakhouse in the Metroplex and Ruth's Chris has the best melt-in-your-mouth steaks by far!!! Pappas' has good steaks (but not as good as Ruth's Chris). III Forks is good but your only potato option is mashed. Bob's - what's the deal with the undercooked carrot? Del Frisco's - food was awful - maybe it was just a bad night. Perry's was horrible. Chamberlain's was just okay. The Palm is good but atmosphere leaves much to be desired. Capital Grille was horrible. Morton's was only so-so.

Posted by JB @ 5:27 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

III Forks should be on this list - the steak is cooked perfectly and melts in your mouth. The sides are excellent. The staff is very attentive. Great place to go with a group of friends. Almost every time we go the general manager comes to our table to say hello.

Posted by DB @ 5:44 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Been to Morton's, steaks have no taste. Now on the other hand, have you been to III Forks in Dallas? The best steak I have ever had and staff is outstanding. To III Forks, keep up the great services.

Posted by RM @ 5:45 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Steve Fields is the top of this list. It is worth the trip to Plano. The steaks are perfect, the waiters are the best in town and the wine list is phenomenal. Customer focus pushes it over the top when comparing to the other top spots.

Posted by Kendall @ 6:00 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Silver Fox in Grapevine covers all of the bases: Great food, excellent service, reasonably priced. Here's the kicker... the GM is a stunningly beautiful woman! Who could ask for more!

Posted by Ray @ 6:01 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

My house--never tasted a restaurant steak that compared to home-grilled.

Posted by Craig Spitzberg @ 6:29 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

The back room at Pappas is one of the best dining experiences in Big D. Less noise and commotion than the main dining room, with Sinatra and Nat King Cole providing the perfect background. Close your eyes and you could imagine it’s the 1950s at Toots Shore’s in Manhattan. For those who prefer the dry aging process, Pappas has it down to a science. Even rare, the steaks have a certain al dente quality without compromising tenderness. The wine list is an oenologist's dream. Service is exacting but casually friendly. When you receive your credit card statement and see the Pappas line, it will confirm you’ve had one of the most luxurious dining experiences in Dallas!

Posted by Matt @ 6:42 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Pappa Bros. is at the top of my very short list. Del Friscos a close 2nd.

The food at Bob's is great, but the loud atmosphere I didn't particulary care for.

Posted by Gabriel @ 6:47 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

What!?!? Where's III Forks in the list? They are one of the few remaining "Prime" steakhouses. They are still my favorite. My service has always been exceptional, the ambiance extraordinary, and the food outstanding. The others are good, but my money always goes to III Forks.

Posted by David @ 6:47 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Best steakhouse = Del Friscos. As good a steak as any in Dallas and better than many. Some great appetizers if you're just there to hang at the bar or cigar lounge (plus great entertainment in the lounge). Try the Prime Martini (mashed potatoes in a martini glass topped with a dozen or so small medallions of prime filet with a nice peppercorn gravy) for $12 if you just want to listen to music in the lounge. All in all, never a bad moment in over 30 trips (can't say that about other hi end steakhouses).

Posted by Theresa @ 7:02 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

All of those are good steakhouses, but my favorite is III Forks in North Dallas. They know me by name and always cook my steak to perfection. Why go anywhere else? III Forks all the way.

Posted by F. Rosenbaum @ 8:06 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Pappa's Brothers is by far the best steakhouse in Dallas.

Posted by themexcellentone @ 8:35 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Best steak in my opinion, Bob's on Lemmon. You can't beat a filet that cuts like butter and is cooked to perfection.

Where is this Perry's of which you all speak? I've not heard of it but now I think I need to try it.

Believe it or not, but one of the best steaks I ever had in Dallas was at Campisi's Egyptian Lounge.

Posted by Al Biernat @ 9:17 PM Fri, May 09, 2008

Dear Bill,
Thank you for including Al Biernat's on your top list of steakhouses, and also for showing a photo of our 29 ounce prime rib. What a great honor! We have just started serving Sunday brunch from 11:30-2:30. Off site catering will begin in September under the direction of Michael Weinstein,Chef de Cuisine, from the famous but unfortunately now closed Riviera. All the best and kind regards! AL

Pretty clear that the same person is touting the greatness of III Forks. I've eaten there once and it was not all that great. I've had better at Trail Dust.

For my money, Silver Fox in Grapevine.

Dunston's on Harry Hines...delicious, inexpensive, great atmosphere, and a family tradition since the late '50s. I've been to the other places, but Dunston's is top in my stomach and in my heart. For what it's worth, Perry's is incredible, and a reasonably good value too.

I have to say the steak at Taco Bell tops all of these. There's nothing like a Grilled Steak soft taco with just a little of the medium sauce splashed on it.

Mercury Grill or Mercury Chophouse - Go Chris Ward

#1 - Perry's - Cowboy Ribeye is simply the best steak I ahve ever had. Also, every steak they serve is prime which is a hard thing to find. They also have at least 8-10 seafood selections for my wife who does not enjoy steak. She loves the Seabass.

#2 - Al's - great food and service. Al is a true professional also.

#3 - JR's - We live near Colleyville and dine there when we don't feel like driving to Uptown.

#999 - Nick and Sams - The place just screams fake. Have never had a good meal, food is overpriced, and I always feel as if the server is trying to rip me off. There is so much silicone in the women that dine their. Make sure you have afirm grip on that steak knife.

The top two in Dallas are NI9E Steakhouse and the Mansion on Turtle Creek; flip a coin and decide since they are very close.

If you prefer a quiet place, the Mansion on Turtle Creek is better but if the noise is not objectionable then NI9E is great.

Nine steakhouse has an excellent 84 oz rib-eye that is great to share. Bobs can be great but lately the bone-in rib eye has been hit or miss

give me the Palm any day. Unpretentious, wear your jeans or suit - great food and super service.

Perry's is my new #1. Our company actually rented out their private room this past Thursday and it was AWESOME. Our group has been to about every steakhouse (and their private rooms) in Dallas and you could not beat Perry's. The filet melted in my mouth. Just the perfect amount of seasoning. Also, their private menu gave our group so many choices, even a few fish options. Service was top notch and the restaurant made me feel so comfortable and right at home. I can't wait to take my wife for her bday next month.

Pappas brothers would be my second choice, but boy is it expensive to dine their.

I've enjoyed steaks at all these establishments, but I must say my buddy scott toliver cooks the best steak I've ever eaten. His wife's mac and cheese is better than Perry's on it's best night.

We've been to most all the "institutions" in DFW and like JR's in Colleyville the best. Silver Fox in Grapevine is great too, and of course Del Frisco and Pappas.... food at Bob's is outstanding but service is not, plus you can't hear yourself scream in there (the new Grapevine location, that is).

III Forks is terrible, and it was free, it was a waste of my time.

All of these restaraunts need to allow consumers to bring their own wine for a corkage instead of ordering off a overpriced young menu.

1. Del's never a bad menu, and everything is excellent.
2. Pappas, excellent but pricey
3. Al Biernat's, good steaks, great atmosphere.

WOuld not go back to Perry's, mainly becuase they did not/would not serve espresso. Reason, we were told ownwer did not see the need. 5 things make a great steak dinner, great cab or bordeaux, steak, cream spinach, martini before dinner, cigar, and espresso.

Bob's steak is terrible. I especially hate that big chuck of cinnamon carrot on my plate. Nowhere in the menu indicated that was part of the entree. Del Frisco's food and service are so much better any day.

Posted by bigmike @ 8:40 AM Sat, May 10, 2008

The best steaks come from your own grill. I buy mine from 3737 South Halsted Street,Chicago. Allen Brothers alway have an internet special and no has ever left my table unhappy.

Ranchman's in Ponder (aka The Ponder Steakhouse, www.ranchman.com)

My late father in law's favorite, you go strictly for the food and service. We celibrate his posthumous birthday every year there. Excellent steak and many other things that makes you forget you are in a diner in the middle of nowhere that has not changed in over 50 years.

The Bone-In Cowboy Ribeye at Stephan Pyles! Gotta love the thin onion rings and wild mushroom ragout. If I had to go old school, I'd say Bob's.

The Old Hickory Steakhouse in the Gaylord Texan is outstanding. Expensive, but possibly the best NY Strip I have ever eaten.

For a great out of the way steakhouse, try Four Winds in Wills Point just off of I-20. Excellent!

Rick Stein's Steakhouse on the Tollway & Frankford was fantastic. Exceptional service, charming decor and the best bone-in ribeye I have ever had. Rick dropped by to make sure my evening was special. Great place to do business.

There's no place better than the Sizzler in Farmers Branch. Enough said.

Posted by ndelregno @ 10:15 AM Sat, May 10, 2008

My top 3 in no particular order:

- Chamberlains Chop House
- III Forks
- Silver Fox

Bob's in Plano is excellent, but can be incredibly loud.

Posted by Katy @ 12:04 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

I can't believe I'm reading this. Really? III Forks? Del Frisco's, Ruth's Chris?? You might as well list Furr's at your favorite dining spot.

Posted by Sharon Adams @ 3:16 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

I like Al Biernat's for any kind of steak. We enjoy the steak salad, too. Just the right combination of bleu cheese crumbles, dressing and mixed lettuce and the steak is always grilled to perfection.
We have a friend who is addicted to the prime rib there. We have business meetings there all the time and have always had a first-class experience. Everything about Al's is top notch.

Posted by Shannon @ 3:21 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

Don't see how III Forks can be left off the list of great Steakhouses in Dallas.

To JB:

It was Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" not Melanie Griffith! lol

Posted by sgl @ 3:24 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

III Forks gets my vote. The food is fantastic and you feel special the moment you walk in the door.

Posted by Gene Pool @ 3:39 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

Rick Stein's is hard to beat! Steaks are always tender and cooked to perfection. Staff is VERY attentive and take special care to make you feel welcomed. You never have to ask woh or where the owner is. He'll be at your table to make certain things are perfect for YOU! I grew up at Del Frisco's on Lemmon. Once it changed to Bob's I went once and never returned after my friend was served a rancid steak. Then I followed Dale to III Forks and was overwhelmed. But the former "Proprietor" Rick Stein made a great impression and now I can not seem to go anywhere else. He doesn't advertise so seek him out on the Tollway at Frankfort.

I have been to just about all of these, and both my wife and I think Perry's is the best.

Posted by Anne @ 6:02 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

#1-Bob's in Plano is the BEST OF ALL.

They don't just have a couple of "prime" steaks to choose from. I believe most (if not all) of their steaks are "prime". That filet really does melt in your mouth.

#2-Morton's - downtown
#3-Del Frisco's - Ft. Worth

Posted by Glen Forshee @ 7:13 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

Mr. G's at DFW airport is a place that you must try. Very expensive but you can not find better service or a better tasting steak, and I have eaten at all the ones on your list!

Posted by gmk @ 7:48 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

Al Biernat's wins hands down. Consistently the best cooked steaks and the highest quality. Veal Chop may be best in US outside of NYC.

Posted by dw @ 9:08 PM Sat, May 10, 2008

The very best steak in Dallas in not at a steakhouse. The pepper steak at Cafe Pacific is always outstanding and the service is superb.
