Hey, gang, we're launching a new dining feature to spotlight Dallas-Fort Worth's best restaurants.
Every two weeks, we'll present a list of top restaurants in one category (ranging from burgers to Thai and late-night joints to ice cream shops) selected by our squadron of dining critics. We're kicking it off with - what else in Dallas? - steakhouses.
But, as has become the tradition during the Eats blog's inaugural year, we're looking for your opinion, too. So let's hear it: What chophouse most sets your carnivorous heart atwitter?
Post your picks and feedback here. Or e-mail dining@dallasnews.com. We'll publish some of these comments in a print version, which will appear in a future issue of Guide.
Click the link below to read our picks.
Here are our critics' favorites. They are presented alphabetically, without ranking:
Al Biernat's
The charming owner makes the experience.
Favorite steaks: filet mignon of elk; bone-in, dry-aged New York strip.
BLT Steak
Swank, contemporary décor, and a great Lobster Cobb salad to start.
Favorite steaks: Prime bone-in rib eye and American Wagyu top cap.
Bob's Steak and Chop House
A perpetual hangout of powerbrokers and professional athletes, Bob's revels in the steakhouse classics.
Favorite steaks: Bone-in Kansas City strip, filet mignon.
Capital Grille
The muscular decor at this outpost of the upscale chain is equally matched by its heavyweight menu.
Steaks here are dry-aged Black Angus beef, prepared simply with salt and pepper or rubbed and sauced in a few luxurious ways.
Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House
Del Frisco's was among the pioneers of chophouses along the Tollway north of LBJ Freeway and continues to flourish.
Favorite steaks: Classic cuts like rib eye and New York strip.
Morton's, the Steakhouse
This location of the nationwide chain still delivers on food and service.
Steaks are prime-grade beef and wet-aged, which imparts a silkiness that will thrill those who like their beef buttery.
Nick and Sam's
Discerning Uptown and Highland Park crowds cram this place nightly.
Favorite steaks: dry-aged cowboy rib eye and the chateaubriand for two.
Pappas Bros.
The Dallas outpost of Pappas Bros. Steakhouse elevates itself through extraordinary wine service.
Favorite food aspect of the restaurant: an in-house dry-aging program for the rib eyes and New York strips.

First trip to Bob's Lemmon Ave was a dissappointment; Capital Grille overall best dining experience; Plano Bob's had an incredible filet; Al Biernat's good but more atmosphere than super-top quality
All the restaurants listed are wonderful, but Pappas Bros is tops! The food, service and wine selection make them the best. Al Biernat's and Del Frisco's run a close second and third.
IT'S KENNY'S IN ADDISON
WE WENT THERE FOR RESTAURANT WEEK AND HAD ONE OF THE BEST STEAKS YES, I ALSO GO TO BRAZILIAN STEAKHOUSES FOR THE ALL YOU CAN EAT BEEF BONANZAS AND I AM TAKING A VERY SPECIAL PERSON TONIGHT TO THE PALM
TO CELEBRATE OUR JOIN BIRTHDAYS
Steakhouse Comparison:
Best-(5) - Worst (1)
(5)Perry's cooks a great steak and has a casual atmosphere. Great place for women to eat a steak.
(4)If you are in real estate and want to close a big deal, Bob's and the Palm are great places known for the ambiance.
(4)Al Bernait's has great wine, a decent steak and is to open to be quaint.
(2) Fogo de Chao and Texas De Brazil salt the meats too much. Although buffet, you leave feeling like you are a piece of jerky.
(5) Del Frisco's cooks a great steak.
(3) Ruth Chris is too much of a franchise to be considered a competitor.
(5) As much as Papa's Bros spends on advertising they should be good.
(4) Nick & Sam's. The bone in ribeye is hard to beat.
Without a doubt the best steakhouse is Fort Griffin Steakhouse in Albany, Texas.
Perry's! I go there 2-3 times a month. Steaks are cooked to perfection, and their mac and cheese is to die for!
Where is Perry's on your list? I love the bone-in ribeye at Nick & Sams, but the filet at Perry's is hard to beat.
I find it hard to believe that Perry's is not on the critics' favorites. I have been dining there for years and the food is more consistent than any other place I patronize. The dark woods and subdued lighting lends it self to glamorous but snappy causal atmosphere. I rate them a 5 on a scale of 1 to 5.
Absolute favorite is Del Frisco's ~ they really know how to cook a great steak and keep you coming back for more!
I luv me some steak! Bob's overall has the best steak for the money. I've been to both locations and had great meals & service. I took my fiance there for his birthday (he'd never been), and his reaction was very similar to Melanie Griffin's famous restaurant scene from "When Harry Met Sally". Perrys, Al Bernait's, and Pappas (in that order) are my favs.
Capital Grille. Hands down!
While not the best steakhouse, the best steak remains Del Frisco's. For years I've longed in vain for one of these spots and others to top Dels beef. I'm still waiting.
Without hesitation Capital Grille is #1 in Dallas. If you live in the midcities Bob's Chophouse in Grapevine is #1. (Like it better than the Dallas location)
I have to say I've been everywhere, Nine, Bob's, Del Frisco's, Perry's, Kenny's, Ounce, BLT, etc. and nothing beats Nick and Sam's from top to bottom, hands down, the best.
Chamberlain's Chop House is the best for my money. I like the fact that it is the only truly chef driven steak house.
Perry's is by far the best I've been to. I travel alot and compare. Always come home to Perry's. Filet is like butter, service is awesome, atmosphere is comforting.
Come on, to heck with the foo-foo steakhouses where you have to pay for salads and other stuff. Two of the best steak joints in the Metroplex are the Culpepper in Rockwall, and Ranchman's in Ponder (aka The Ponder Steakhouse, www.ranchman.com).
When I go to eat a nice steak somewhere and am paying more than I would at say...Outback...I don't want to see the Rangers playing on multiple TV's in the dining area, nor do I want to see teenagers in cutoff jean shorts and flip flops. This is what I experienced at the Plano Bob's. Great food, but ambiance is not what I expected. Lemmon/Wycliff is a different story. That is what I'd expect out of a steakhouse of that calibur, I've never had a meal less than extraordinary at that location. Al Biernat's and Perry's are my other picks, all rate #1 in different respects.
Pappas!! No question. Only for special events though because it's pricey.
I have been dining at Perry's for years and it is still one of my favorites.
Del Frisco's - best steak
Nick & Sam's - Best Atmopshere
Silver Fox - Best Value
I think it would be useful to post a list of the best AFFORDABLE steak houses.
Houstons and TLC get my "best value" vote. Outback and Texas Roadhouse are horrible at any price.
Ruth's Chris is excellent even if it is a franchise.
JB: Melanie Griffin?? You must mean Melanie Griffith. . . And she was NOT in When Harry Met Sally. That was Meg Ryan.
Del Frisco's was among the largest disappointments ever for us. The food was not up to the great hype I had always heard and the service was very slow. Smith & Wolensky's was another major disappointment. Lousy food.
The best steaks in town are at the Silver Fox in Grapevine. Outstanding food and fantastic service.
I'd have to say Del Frisco's is at the top of my list. I also really enjoy 3 Forks, although I haven't been there in years. Has the quality gone done? And, I wouldn't even list BLT Steak among those. The food was fine, but the service was sub-par for the price point. We'll never go back.
Has anyone ever tried the Kona Crusted Ribeye at Capital Grille? I have read reviews all over the net and they say its fantastic. I'm dying to try it.
Bob's Cote De Boeuf is excellent!
Does N9NE even serve steaks? Have not heard one thing positive about the food!
Al Biernat's for all around food, ambience, drinks and wine. Bob's is number 2. I lunch alot at Perry's but never dinner. Given all the favorable comments, I'll have to try it. We used to like Morton's but have not been in years. Has anyone been there lately? It was among the first of the high-end steak houses in Dallas, and their original Chicago was great, at least it was a number of years back.
I eat at Capital Grille quite regularly for a casual night out and the food is always good. If I'm going to drop serious money, I definitely would choose Pappa Bros ribeye.
Hands down - Pappas Bros. Steakhouse.
Not only do they have the best aged steak, but the au gratin potatoes are to DIE for!
Capital Grille
Nick & Sam's Chateaubriand for Two - the best ever, worth the price. And it is so large it feeds a family of four for a week.
Chamberlain's if you are going with people who want something other than steak. His steaks are superb, but so are his other dishes.
For my $ I will say the best overall dining experience is The Old Warsaw. Great Filet..
The bone in ribeye at Nick and Sam's is unbeatable. Pappa's covers their steaks in MSG...no good.
III Forks in Addison is my favorite steak place. The bone-in ribeye is heavenly, as is the famous III Forks salad and bacon-wrapped scallops.
I prefer Bob's, N&S, and Al's for convenient locations, but my objective choice for best steak in Dallas is Pappas.
Where is Chamberlain's on your list? I have never had anything there that wasn't absolutely wonderful.
No doubt about it, Perry's is the best steak I have ever had!
1. Park Cities Prime & Del Frisco's (tie, filets melt in your mouth).
2. Three Forks
3. Al Biernet's
4. Pappas
5. Lawry's (Nobody beats their Prime Rib although Houston's comes close).
I can't include Bob's in my top because my wife and I have gotten sick the past 3 times and a row eating there.
Why go to a steakhouse when you can go to Hirsch's Meat Market in Plano? I can get a 10 oz Prime Filet cut exactly how I want for $20. And I can cook/season it exactly the way I want! I will never spend my $$ at a steakhouse again!
What are you people talking about? III Forks is the best in Dallas and the is best "chef driven" (as stated in another comment). I met the Chef/Proprietor as he roamed the dining room visiting with people that just received their steaks...now that is personal service! I've been to Pappas and gotten overcooked steaks (5 of us out of a party of 6 - not good) and the next time I went a glass of $150 bottled wine spilled with just an "oops" to show for it not even an apology ...needless to say I won't go back. Capital Grille I do enjoy when I'm near the downtown area, if you go you have to get the Coconut Cream Pie it is absolutely unbelievable.
III Forks though is still the best.
All of these Steakhouses listed have aspects that are great (not including BLT). I like Bob's at Legacy, but my new favorite is the OUNCE in Addison. It's atmosphere is completely different, no Frank Sinatra, and the service has been great each time. I tried the Akaushi last time, and its the best steak I have ever had, far better than any Kobe beef.
5. Hibiscus - Go for the scene, stay for the meat.
4. Nick and Sam's - Ambience can't be beat and the wine list is tops.
3. Perry's - Just slightly below Bob's IMO on food and service, but just slightly.
2. Pappas's - Steak is on par with Bob's but the wine list lives in the expense account only range and the service is sometimes stuffy.
1. Bob's - Lemmon location. Its the boys club, it's the original. Consistently the best beef, service and a reasonable wine list.
Bob's, Del Frisco's, Pappas Bros - they're all really great steakhouses but I still think the best steak in town is the one I cook on my grill. Hmmm. Maybe I'll open my own place.
Pappas Bros is #1 and Bob's in Frisco is #1a. Honorable mention to Nine in Frisco also.
Sizzler anyone?
Bob's is the best. Who couldn't love the carrot.
Where is III Forks on the list? If I'm going to choose a steakhouse, I will ONLY eat somewhere that serves USDA Prime! III Forks is top notch and definitely needs to be added to this blog.
Leave Dallas and go west to the Fort Worth Del Frisco's. Best service, consistantly great food, and a comfortably elegant atmosphere. Also one of the top 3 wine lists in all of DFW.
What are the prices for Perry's?
I enjoy III folks, steaks are great and the sides are included. Just dont sit out by the patio water fall, its annoying
Pappas is the clear winner, while probably the most expensive too. A lot of people don't like Ruth Chris...I do!
For me it's a tossup between Morton's and Pappas. Morton's wins for atmosphere, though.
Perry's is definitely the best steak house in Dallas! The quality is very consistent and the steak is always cooked to perfection. Don't miss the fabulous calamari and macaroni & cheese!!
All great suggestions. I would also have to include the filet from Sullivan's Steakhouse in Addison. I prefer their filet with wedge salad over any of their other cuts.
B Batts
Nick & Sam's wins everytime with the Prime-Aged Bone In Filet. Best steak I've ever had, and i've been to almost every steakhouse in Dallas multiple times.
Al Biernat's is a close second with their Dry Aged Prime Bone-In New York Strip. Very tasty.
Atmosphere at both restaurants is extremely vibrant and friendly.
III Forks is the best pick. Chef Chris Vogeli is the unassuming master of steaks - 100% USDA Prime. Ten years and still going strong!
Silver Fox in Grapevine.
I've been just about everywhere....
III Forks - Great seasoning, always cooked perfectly and the service is outstanding...
Del Friscos - mmmm creamed spinach. I remember that more than the steaks.
Bob's - one of my top two. The steaks are amazing, the bread is wonderful
BLT - any place that serves popovers with ROOM TEMP butter has my heart. lol
Ounce - BEST prime rib i've ever had. Hands down better than Lawry's. They also serve Akaushi here...and it's probably the best steak I've ever tasted. Buttery..melts in your mouth!
I go to Bob's, Del Frisco's, and III Forks all the time. My favorite is which ever one I went to last.
I love Del Frisco's. The steaks are great and so are the appetizers and sides. However, the best steak I've ever had is at Morton's. Perfection, I love the atmosphere. I feel like Frank Sinatra may be walking in the door at any minute. Papas is OK, but I don't think it's up to par with Del's or Mortons. Never been to Nick and Sam's, will have to check it out. Also, if it's even still there. The T-Bone in the Renisainse Hotel used to be good.
The best steak and food/service in Dallas is JR's Steakhouse in Colleyville.
If you have not been, you are seriously missing the boat.
I have eaten at all of the steakhouses listed and none of these compare to JR's.
The Wild Catter steakhouse in Graham, TX near Possum Kingdom lake is also an incredible find.
I love III Forks. The best filet, awesome cream corn and an inspired wine list. No need to parse the menu. It's all USDA Prime.
Best steak? Right here. Two Saturdays a month with the grill on the shared driveway between us and our next door neighbor. I do the steaks they do the sides. No one else compares. Dee Lincoln and Dave Wamsted bring on your best chefs I'll beat 'em hands down!
There are a few of us retired gents that cannot afford pricey steaks such as Perrys or Pappas. But for a reasonable steak at a reasonable price - try the Ribeye at Tupinamba on Inwood. Good food, Good service, Relaxing family atmosphere. It fits my SS income with a very up-scale beat for the money
Nove Italiano in Victory has a heck of a ribeye...probably the best I've ever had. I believe they share a kitchen with N9NE (same company).
On par with the best in Dallas.
If you want the most "interesting" steak, get the Cowboy Cut at Nick & Sams...you'll love it, and you get a nice 2ft long treat to take home to Fido also.
III Forks! Food, service and atmosphere are all superb. This is where I go when I want to be pampered.
Head north to Steve Field's Steak & Lobster Lounge in Plano. It beats all the other big name places. Food is superb. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and unpretentious. This is the best deal in town when it comes to a great steak dinner!
III Forks is the best steakhouse in the Metroplex. None better.
I can't believe III Forks was not on the list. It is the only place I have always had the best service. The bone-in filet was perfect last week. If you like something closer to downtown, then Al Biernet's is a great alternative, they have a really cool bar scene.
III Forks is the best place to get a steak in Dallas! The food and service are fabulous every time. I love the "juice" you get at the end of the meal - yum!
I agree with everyone who says III Forks is the best. My understanding is they are in the top 100 restaurants in the U.S. None of the others on your list can make that claim.
III Forks gets my vote for flawless professional service and perfect steak. Been there many times and every experience has been excellent. I recommend the ribeye. Al Biernat's and Perry's are worth mentioning, but are not quite as consistent.
Also shocked at the omission of III Forks. Service is outstanding, and the thought of the creamed corn is making me drool all over the keyboard.
Chamberlain's...it's nice to see the man who the restaurant is named for come out of the kitchen...no hype, no pretense, just great food...
I love the steakhouses that are mentioned. Perry's, Chamberlains, the Palm, Ounce and III Forks should be included. Sullivans isn't too bad. I love Kenny's but I don't consider that a "steakhouse". I also enjoyed the filet at Charlie Palmer at the Joule, although the Dallas location is not really considered one of his steakhouses. Great wine selection as well - love the wine shop next door.
III Forks is by far the best in value, style and taste.
III forks dallas is the best steakhouse, not only in taste but in service. Honestly to have a superior dinning experience I would recomend it to anyone.
JR's in Colleyville. Get over there and try this place!
III FORKS is the BEST from the steaks to salads to seafood and overall service and experience. I'm going tonight!
I love steak ,and in Nyc we have the best. However in Dallas the place to go is III FORKS by far the best and most consistent.
I've been to just about every steakhouse in the Metroplex and Ruth's Chris has the best melt-in-your-mouth steaks by far!!! Pappas' has good steaks (but not as good as Ruth's Chris). III Forks is good but your only potato option is mashed. Bob's - what's the deal with the undercooked carrot? Del Frisco's - food was awful - maybe it was just a bad night. Perry's was horrible. Chamberlain's was just okay. The Palm is good but atmosphere leaves much to be desired. Capital Grille was horrible. Morton's was only so-so.
III Forks should be on this list - the steak is cooked perfectly and melts in your mouth. The sides are excellent. The staff is very attentive. Great place to go with a group of friends. Almost every time we go the general manager comes to our table to say hello.
Been to Morton's, steaks have no taste. Now on the other hand, have you been to III Forks in Dallas? The best steak I have ever had and staff is outstanding. To III Forks, keep up the great services.
Steve Fields is the top of this list. It is worth the trip to Plano. The steaks are perfect, the waiters are the best in town and the wine list is phenomenal. Customer focus pushes it over the top when comparing to the other top spots.
Silver Fox in Grapevine covers all of the bases: Great food, excellent service, reasonably priced. Here's the kicker... the GM is a stunningly beautiful woman! Who could ask for more!
My house--never tasted a restaurant steak that compared to home-grilled.
The back room at Pappas is one of the best dining experiences in Big D. Less noise and commotion than the main dining room, with Sinatra and Nat King Cole providing the perfect background. Close your eyes and you could imagine it’s the 1950s at Toots Shore’s in Manhattan. For those who prefer the dry aging process, Pappas has it down to a science. Even rare, the steaks have a certain al dente quality without compromising tenderness. The wine list is an oenologist's dream. Service is exacting but casually friendly. When you receive your credit card statement and see the Pappas line, it will confirm you’ve had one of the most luxurious dining experiences in Dallas!
Pappa Bros. is at the top of my very short list. Del Friscos a close 2nd.
The food at Bob's is great, but the loud atmosphere I didn't particulary care for.
What!?!? Where's III Forks in the list? They are one of the few remaining "Prime" steakhouses. They are still my favorite. My service has always been exceptional, the ambiance extraordinary, and the food outstanding. The others are good, but my money always goes to III Forks.
Best steakhouse = Del Friscos. As good a steak as any in Dallas and better than many. Some great appetizers if you're just there to hang at the bar or cigar lounge (plus great entertainment in the lounge). Try the Prime Martini (mashed potatoes in a martini glass topped with a dozen or so small medallions of prime filet with a nice peppercorn gravy) for $12 if you just want to listen to music in the lounge. All in all, never a bad moment in over 30 trips (can't say that about other hi end steakhouses).
All of those are good steakhouses, but my favorite is III Forks in North Dallas. They know me by name and always cook my steak to perfection. Why go anywhere else? III Forks all the way.
Pappa's Brothers is by far the best steakhouse in Dallas.
Best steak in my opinion, Bob's on Lemmon. You can't beat a filet that cuts like butter and is cooked to perfection.
Where is this Perry's of which you all speak? I've not heard of it but now I think I need to try it.
Believe it or not, but one of the best steaks I ever had in Dallas was at Campisi's Egyptian Lounge.
Dear Bill,
Thank you for including Al Biernat's on your top list of steakhouses, and also for showing a photo of our 29 ounce prime rib. What a great honor! We have just started serving Sunday brunch from 11:30-2:30. Off site catering will begin in September under the direction of Michael Weinstein,Chef de Cuisine, from the famous but unfortunately now closed Riviera. All the best and kind regards! AL
Pretty clear that the same person is touting the greatness of III Forks. I've eaten there once and it was not all that great. I've had better at Trail Dust.
For my money, Silver Fox in Grapevine.
Dunston's on Harry Hines...delicious, inexpensive, great atmosphere, and a family tradition since the late '50s. I've been to the other places, but Dunston's is top in my stomach and in my heart. For what it's worth, Perry's is incredible, and a reasonably good value too.
I have to say the steak at Taco Bell tops all of these. There's nothing like a Grilled Steak soft taco with just a little of the medium sauce splashed on it.
Mercury Grill or Mercury Chophouse - Go Chris Ward
#1 - Perry's - Cowboy Ribeye is simply the best steak I ahve ever had. Also, every steak they serve is prime which is a hard thing to find. They also have at least 8-10 seafood selections for my wife who does not enjoy steak. She loves the Seabass.
#2 - Al's - great food and service. Al is a true professional also.
#3 - JR's - We live near Colleyville and dine there when we don't feel like driving to Uptown.
#999 - Nick and Sams - The place just screams fake. Have never had a good meal, food is overpriced, and I always feel as if the server is trying to rip me off. There is so much silicone in the women that dine their. Make sure you have afirm grip on that steak knife.
The top two in Dallas are NI9E Steakhouse and the Mansion on Turtle Creek; flip a coin and decide since they are very close.
If you prefer a quiet place, the Mansion on Turtle Creek is better but if the noise is not objectionable then NI9E is great.
Nine steakhouse has an excellent 84 oz rib-eye that is great to share. Bobs can be great but lately the bone-in rib eye has been hit or miss
give me the Palm any day. Unpretentious, wear your jeans or suit - great food and super service.
Perry's is my new #1. Our company actually rented out their private room this past Thursday and it was AWESOME. Our group has been to about every steakhouse (and their private rooms) in Dallas and you could not beat Perry's. The filet melted in my mouth. Just the perfect amount of seasoning. Also, their private menu gave our group so many choices, even a few fish options. Service was top notch and the restaurant made me feel so comfortable and right at home. I can't wait to take my wife for her bday next month.
Pappas brothers would be my second choice, but boy is it expensive to dine their.
I've enjoyed steaks at all these establishments, but I must say my buddy scott toliver cooks the best steak I've ever eaten. His wife's mac and cheese is better than Perry's on it's best night.
We've been to most all the "institutions" in DFW and like JR's in Colleyville the best. Silver Fox in Grapevine is great too, and of course Del Frisco and Pappas.... food at Bob's is outstanding but service is not, plus you can't hear yourself scream in there (the new Grapevine location, that is).
III Forks is terrible, and it was free, it was a waste of my time.
All of these restaraunts need to allow consumers to bring their own wine for a corkage instead of ordering off a overpriced young menu.
1. Del's never a bad menu, and everything is excellent.
2. Pappas, excellent but pricey
3. Al Biernat's, good steaks, great atmosphere.
WOuld not go back to Perry's, mainly becuase they did not/would not serve espresso. Reason, we were told ownwer did not see the need. 5 things make a great steak dinner, great cab or bordeaux, steak, cream spinach, martini before dinner, cigar, and espresso.
Bob's steak is terrible. I especially hate that big chuck of cinnamon carrot on my plate. Nowhere in the menu indicated that was part of the entree. Del Frisco's food and service are so much better any day.
The best steaks come from your own grill. I buy mine from 3737 South Halsted Street,Chicago. Allen Brothers alway have an internet special and no has ever left my table unhappy.
Ranchman's in Ponder (aka The Ponder Steakhouse, www.ranchman.com)
My late father in law's favorite, you go strictly for the food and service. We celibrate his posthumous birthday every year there. Excellent steak and many other things that makes you forget you are in a diner in the middle of nowhere that has not changed in over 50 years.
The Bone-In Cowboy Ribeye at Stephan Pyles! Gotta love the thin onion rings and wild mushroom ragout. If I had to go old school, I'd say Bob's.
The Old Hickory Steakhouse in the Gaylord Texan is outstanding. Expensive, but possibly the best NY Strip I have ever eaten.
For a great out of the way steakhouse, try Four Winds in Wills Point just off of I-20. Excellent!
Rick Stein's Steakhouse on the Tollway & Frankford was fantastic. Exceptional service, charming decor and the best bone-in ribeye I have ever had. Rick dropped by to make sure my evening was special. Great place to do business.
There's no place better than the Sizzler in Farmers Branch. Enough said.
My top 3 in no particular order:
- Chamberlains Chop House
- III Forks
- Silver Fox
Bob's in Plano is excellent, but can be incredibly loud.
I can't believe I'm reading this. Really? III Forks? Del Frisco's, Ruth's Chris?? You might as well list Furr's at your favorite dining spot.
I like Al Biernat's for any kind of steak. We enjoy the steak salad, too. Just the right combination of bleu cheese crumbles, dressing and mixed lettuce and the steak is always grilled to perfection.
We have a friend who is addicted to the prime rib there. We have business meetings there all the time and have always had a first-class experience. Everything about Al's is top notch.
Don't see how III Forks can be left off the list of great Steakhouses in Dallas.
To JB:
It was Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" not Melanie Griffith! lol
III Forks gets my vote. The food is fantastic and you feel special the moment you walk in the door.
Rick Stein's is hard to beat! Steaks are always tender and cooked to perfection. Staff is VERY attentive and take special care to make you feel welcomed. You never have to ask woh or where the owner is. He'll be at your table to make certain things are perfect for YOU! I grew up at Del Frisco's on Lemmon. Once it changed to Bob's I went once and never returned after my friend was served a rancid steak. Then I followed Dale to III Forks and was overwhelmed. But the former "Proprietor" Rick Stein made a great impression and now I can not seem to go anywhere else. He doesn't advertise so seek him out on the Tollway at Frankfort.
I have been to just about all of these, and both my wife and I think Perry's is the best.
#1-Bob's in Plano is the BEST OF ALL.
They don't just have a couple of "prime" steaks to choose from. I believe most (if not all) of their steaks are "prime". That filet really does melt in your mouth.
#2-Morton's - downtown
#3-Del Frisco's - Ft. Worth
Mr. G's at DFW airport is a place that you must try. Very expensive but you can not find better service or a better tasting steak, and I have eaten at all the ones on your list!
Al Biernat's wins hands down. Consistently the best cooked steaks and the highest quality. Veal Chop may be best in US outside of NYC.
The very best steak in Dallas in not at a steakhouse. The pepper steak at Cafe Pacific is always outstanding and the service is superb.
Dunston's Harry Hines - 52 years in the market. Great Food, Reasonable prices, Service, Service, Service. Family Owned and Operated
Chamberlains - Just plain great. Great Chef and Service. Something for everyone
Perrys' and Pappas
Dunstons on Harry Hines. Need I say more. How long has it been Gene? More than 50 years! Good steaks in a great atmosphere. Don't need a loan to eat at Dunstons
Rick's Chop House in McKinney is excellent for food, atmosphere, and service.
A word to the wise about national "100 Best" lists: for credibility, they all rate Peter Luger's #1, throw in other places with a national awareness - Bern's, Harris', The Prime Rib, etc. - and SELL the other 90 or so slots. I saw this recently on a list which rated both Silver Fox and III Forks highly. They PAID for that and PAID to "throw in" Bob's at 86 or so just for a laugh!
III Forks! We have friends from West Texas who come over regularly just to eat there. Great sides, too.
In our opinion, "III Forks" in Far North Dallas has the best steaks and service in town. It's hard to beat this steak place
Randy's Steakhouse on Main in Frisco is worth a visit. Great steaks in a 150-year old converted house. Wine list is a bit overpriced, though, so you may want to stick with cocktails or beer.
I have traveled for many years and always sought out the nearest Ruth's Chris. I wish I could "finish" a steak like they do. I love that buttery taste. Where is Perry's and does anyone else think another steakhouse finishes thier steaks similiar to RC?
The Keg (there are several around, and one is in Irving, and one in Ft. Worth.
Steaks and everything else are fabulous, and service ain't no slouch.
Some think their steaks are the best in the Metroplex, and i don't disagree. Palm is good, 3 Forks , Nick And Sam's also, but for my palate, i'll take Keg.
For the $$$$$$... I Go to TexasRoadhoue.. Great Steaks and Great Sevice... Their Ribs are to die for Tooo..
Perry's is by far the best steakhouse in Dallas. I have been going there every week for a year and haven't found a steakhouse with better quality and service anywhere.
Pappas Bros is the best, with Nick & Sams and Al Biernat's close seconds. Best value is Kirby's.
I've been to everyone of these places multiple times. My rating:
1. Pappa's Bros.
2. Del Frisco's
3. Perry's
4. Nick & Sam's
5. Bob's
I believe this is the best steak in town. Not only that but it is BY FAR the best price. You receive with every steak potatoes, sugar snap peas and creamed corn. You also get tomatoes and onions free! The largest shrimp in town and Great sauces!
Gotta say Papa's is the best! Make sure to call ahead and "special order" their Lobster Bisque! Best bisque I've ever had! Bob's is right there with em at first in my book!
I've been to III Forks via our company banquets numerous times, and must say their average at best for what they charge.
Papa's Brothers and Bob's Steak and Chop House blow away Del Friscos,RC, and the like. Prepare to spend some bucks though if you want to do it right!
By far III Forks is the best deal in town, deserves to be on the list. The best thing on the menu is the Prime Bone In Ribeye. And to the comment that says the III Forks comments are rigged and it was the worst ever. Silver Fox is the sister of III Forks (and your Fave). Their menu is so similar you might call it the same. Both steakhouses put out an amazing experience, but III Forks atmosphere is hard to beat. Other faves include Culpepper in Rockwall, Capital Grille downtown and Kirbys Plano.
By far the worst experience I have had was Bob's Legacy in Plano. Texas Roadhouse does not even belong on a list such as this.
You know, to be quite honest, I'm floored that I haven't seen mention of the bovine bliss served up at Golden Corral. I'm just sayin'...
Well, it's obvious we are blessed to live in Dallas if you are a steak lover. A wiser person than I once said that "variety is the spice of life" and we have a variery of great steak houses to choose from. If I were to try to rank them, I would say:
1. Del Frisco - still the gold standard in my opinion
2. Nick & Sam's
3. Bob's
4. Pappas Bros.
5. III Forks
6. Al Biernat's
But, I could invert the list and be just as happy. I left out national chains (except for Del Frisco since it started here) on purpose.
III Forks hands down! Whether I am entertaining or enjoying a night out with my wife, this mecca of steak never disappoints. Service is spectacular, wine list is top notch and the food is phenominal. I dine out quite a bit all over the country, but when in Dallas....this is always my top option.
Cool River!! This place is simply awesome. You can go have a fantastic steak, enjoy their terrific wine list, smoke a stogie in their cigar lounge, check out a live band and catch the game on one of the biggest TVs I have ever seen! There is no other steakhouse that offers this level overall entertainment.
3 forks rocks! Being a carnivore, I have been to nearly every steakhouse you can think of. This place takes the cake.
For more than 30 years 3 buddies and I convene in Dallas. We still discuss our choice via conference call. The price is never a factor. The last 7 times we have decided on Del Frisco's.
Hmmm...
III Forks--The place has a gold roof. Nuff said.
I like these round-up features you've started. Can you add patio restaurants to the list? I looked up your recommendations on the "patio" link this weekend, and this list was very old and outdated. Not helpful at all. We deeply love our patios in Dallas, and this is the season for them!
I don't get how you can rank them at all. It depends on when you go, the chef that grabs the steak (prime is a relative term..some of these cuts are better than others) and how he/she cooks it. FYI...Pappas, I think is the most consistent and you can sit in the bar and have a bar Filet (6oz) or strip (10oz.) with side included for $28. The bar area also has great atmosphere (dark, music). I actually prefer it to the dining rooms.
I recently went to Park Cities Prime and had one of the best NY Strip Steaks I have ever had. Also, the service was really top-notch and the wine list is incredible.
Park Cities PRIME is awesome! Staff and food are world class.
Traildust...you want a steak cooked exactly as you asked it to be, a reasonable price..this is the place. You want to pay ridiculous prices for same steak, go to any of palces listed above including saltgrass
Bob's on Lemmon and Rick Stein's...the rest can all be lumped together. I do a lot of client entertainment and been to all mentioned many times
When I think of USDA Prime steaks, III Forks is always at the top of the list! How many others can claim 100% Prime? Factor in all the sides that come with your meal, and you have the best of all worlds. Great service, great wine list, and 100% USDA Prime steaks -- III Forks!!
Dakotas seems to be the best kept secret in Dallas. Steaks are hands down better than anything I've had at the other names on the list. If you can tear yourself away from the steaks, the menu has a huge selection of fabulous choices. I've never had anything that wasn't exquisite, and I still dream about the crab cakes and crème brulee.
Park Cities PRIME has a quiet, clubby, comfortable feel and the service is some of the best in town. The live music is a nice touch.
The food is tops as is the winelist which includes good variety as well as old favorites at reasonable prices.
I have grown to love III Forks in Dallas. The location is easy to get to, the service is unmatched, and the food is delicious. They have the capability to book private events. This has been a blessing when it comes to company dinners and meetings. If you haven't been your missing out!!!
Park Cities Prime is hands down the best steakhouse in the metroplex.
The steaks are grilled to perfection and literally melt in your mouth!
Mr. G's at DFW Hyatt is the perfect combination of dry aged prime beef, superior service, expert wine knowledge and intimate, private club atmosphere for magnificent entertaining and special occaisons.
My favorite - Kirby's on Greenville – from helping to choose the right cut, preparation and degree of doneness – to making great selections and pairings from the wine list. The service is impeccable.
Whenever I'm looking for the perfet steakhouse my family and I always head straight for III Forks in Dallas. The phenominal service is unbeatable, and every steak on the menu is cooked to our individual perfection.
KIRBY'S!!!!!!!
The Greenville location is the best!! Cowboy cut Ribeye, Pepper Filet, Maryland Style Crab Cake!!!! I am getting hungry just thinking about those perfectly GRILLED steaks!!! Who wants a Broiled steak???? You could stay at home and do that. My vote is for the First and Best Steakhouse in the DFW area....KIRBY'S all the way!!!!!
My favorite steak is the tenderloin prepared by the winner of the Texas Steak Cookoff twice in two years, Chef Gorji, at his Canary Cafe Mediterranean Steak and Seafood in Addison. The Canary is not a sporty, macho steakhouse, but a cozy and candlelit space. Whether you order a tenderloin filet, ribeye, or strip, it will be prime and perfectly prepared to order by the chef himself. The wine list includes some affordable selections, and delicious sides are included, so no second mortgage will be necessary.
Shall I also say, my last experience at Del Frisco's was miserable. Service was slow and insolent, lights were bright, and my filet (ordered rare) was almost well done. Dried up little wad. Only the dressing on the wedge salad was remarkable. Thank goodness I wasn't paying the bill.
geez. Mr. G's?
ok, my take on this is I think it's based on where you are in life and what you want to "see" at a steakhouse. I'm not a dallasite from birth, and frankly I chalk up the Del Frisco's and Morton's and Ruth Chris comments to folks that probably grew up here in the 80's, etc. And that's fine if true, nostalgia is important and can make an evening out enjoying steak all the more better. However I find it difficult to think that an objective mind could eat a steak at Pappa's (forgetting for a minute the price point) and say you can get a better steak in Dallas.
When I go to eat an expensive steak, i'm not going persay for ambience, i'm not "looking" for something. I'm going to eat a very expensive steak, drink some expensive wine and have some nice adult conversation. Only time ambience generally affects me in that setting is if it's too loud or over the top... think the swinging lady at Old San Fransisco... something that might draw one's attention away from the food.
I traveled much, and i'm sure many of you have too, and perhaps many of your experiences dwarf mine i'm sure... but in my travel's i've found nationally that folks that have been to Pappa's agree that it's on another level.
Beside Pappa's, I do like C. Grille and Bob's in particular.
Of the aforementioned, only Palm does not make my list. But then again, i'm not looking for gimmick, on steak night, i'm looking for great steak and adult conversation and I just don't see how, if that's the case, it can be named along with a few others that should be omitted.
Either way, long live steak in Dallas.
My favorite steakhouse is Kirby's. The menu, special events, atmosphere - complete dinning experience!
Kirby's Steakhouse in Plano has been our favorite for years. Excellent steaks, staff, and atmosphere!
Kirby's Steakhouse on Greenville is by far the BEST!!!
I vote for Kirby's. We got to the Kirby's on all special occasions and whenever we get hungry for a great steak. I have taken large parties to III Forks and Pappa's, but I will spend my personal money at Kirby's
I've been a fan of the bone-in ribeye at III Forks for 10 years. I live in Ft Worth and drive to North Dallas to satisfy my appetite for steak. With the cost of gas and time being major factors in a choice for dinner these days, III Forks is worth it.
The best steak I have ever had is at Kirbys Steakhouse in Grapevine, Wonderful filet migon-- They also have a great presentation for crab legs (King and Turf is my personal favorite)--Great service, wonderful wine selection and great steaks.
Kirby's steakhouse any location - Pepper Filet
We love "Kirby's" Steakhouse. The food is wonderful,,,GREATEST STEAKS IN TOWN.
The atmosphere is wonderful and the service is GREAT!Everyone we send there loves it!
KIRBY'S!
My favorite steakhouse is Kirby's. The menu, the special events, the atmosphere - a complete dinning experience.
Kirby's gets my vote. The food's great, the place is quiet (quite a change for Dallas), and I have never had anything less than excellent service. You know you're going to enjoy your meal.
People are you forgetting about Kirby's? It is the best.
Kirby's is my favorite. Great friendly service and delicious steaks and the best sides! Mashed potatoes are one of a kind.
Kirby's on Greenville Avenue is the best steakhouse as far as I am concerned. The Texas atmosphere is great but you can dress or be casual and still feel in place. The filet is perfect as are all the steaks. In addition they have to best Alaskan King crab legs I've had anywhere in Dallas. Don't overlook this gem.
Gosh, call me a cynic, but it's so fascinating how certain steakhouses suddenly get a block of raves at one time. Couldn't be PR efforts or an email blast on behalf of the restaurant encouraging people to comment ... could it?
Requests for recommendations like this will encourage this kind of thing, it's a natural side effect. But just so you know our stance: We're taking an egalitarian approach to posting all non-offensive comments. Read into these cycles what you will.
I am hooked on Kirby's pepper steak and their killer bleu cheese salad dressing. They have some of the best seafood dishes around, too.
Kirby's...the best. Pick anything...and you'll see...my favorites, rib-eye and the seafood. I have cravings just writing about them!
Park Cities Prime gets my vote for the best steaks ever. They melt in your mouth! Cozy atmosphere and superb wine list!
Rick Chophouse in McKinney-the most tender steak I have ever had. I have eaten at Pappa's, Nick and Sam's, Perry's, Kirbys, III Forks, and Pappas on a regular basis.
Bob Steakhouse was disappointing-definitely NOT the best in Texas.
Pappa's would be my next favorite, mainly because of the side dishes.
Honestly I have frequented Kirbys more than any of the others. The atmosphere in Southlake is nice and quaint.
WE love KIRBY's!Fantastic food, atmosphere, wonderful service, lovely wine list need I say more.
Plus we dont have to drive all the way to Dallas for a good steak!
Kirby's is the best steakhouse in the dfw area. Too loud tho.
Kirbys, Great service, even better food.
I vote for Kirby's Steakhouse as the Best Steakhouse in Dallas! I have been dining there for over 10 years with friends and family and highly recomend this steakhouse to others!!
Hands down Kirby's Steakhouse in Southlake! Best steak anywhere! If you are lucky enough to nab a seat at the bar on Fridays, Teddy will charm you into coming back again and again!
Kirby's is my favorite in Plano. I love the atmosphere and the Blue Cheese Filet is out of this world. It is so tender you can cut it with a fork. I love the service and the quality of the food is outstanding
you're not the only one who noticed that Bill. I had the same reaction as well. maybe they require all the waiters to type one up during the pre-shift?
My absolute favorite is the blackened new york strip at Perry's. They top it with 3 huge shrimp that are spicy and so good. I always get the mac and cheese and the brown bag apple pie for dessert. The place smells so good when you walk in the door and everyone is so friendly. The BEST!
I have travelled around the World and you can find one of the best restaurants right here in Dallas at Kirby's. Excellent service and great food.
If you are looking to sink your teeth into a suculant piece meat, then III Forks is your destination. The prime beef almost slices itself as your knife glides through wet angus. With the mashed potatoes and homemade cream corn, I don't know how anyone could dine anywhere else. So if your ready to handle the handsome atmosphere, and undenyingly the best steaks in Dallas, then III Forks is where you should be.
Kirby's in Southlake. Great food, good service, nice ambiance. Gotta have some of their wonderful fried pickles before having a wonderful caesar salad before having a melt in your mouth steak. And their chocolate spice cake dessert is to die for.
We love Kirbys. My personal favorite is the Lobster Oscar (with Tenderloin medallions.) The mashed potatos are the best I have ever had and all of the desserts are fantastic. The service is also exceptional.
Kirby's on Greenville is a longtime favorite of me and my family! You just can't beat it!!!! We are so grateful to have such a great institution in Dallas!
Seriously, I cannot belive Kirby's was not listed above all! Every single thing on the menu is delicious and I honestly prefer it to any other steakhouse in Dallas. All the others are good (and I have tried them all), but no other tops Kirby's taste and service. My favorite is the pepper filet with garlic mash potatoes! Yum!
If you're going for the throw-back 1950's apple-ring-on-the-plate experience (and really, why wouldn't you?), you cannot beat Dunston's (the original on Lovers). Great wood-fired grill, sassy servers and a salad bar that's hard to beat for having the old-school "essentials". No wagyu, hand-cut, dry-aged fru-fru stuff here -- just good food and great people watching. Gimme Dunston's over just about any of the entries on the critics list. Anyday.
Our vote is definately for Kirby's Plano! We have been going there for many years. The service and staff has always been the best!
Kirby's in Southlake is our favorite steakhouse by far....always right, never a challenge other than what shall we order. The best crab cakes in the area!!!
Kirbys, Nick and Sams, and Bob's are the top three...all are a little different and it just depends on what mood you're in, but the food is great at each one!
Kirby's is our favorite - Fantastic steak and the absolute best crab cakes! We enjoy the welcoming, relaxed atmosphere --- we dated there 40 years ago and keep going back...even after enjoying III Forks and Silver Fox.
My wife and I have been going to the original Kirby's on Greenville Avenue since we first started dating over 10 years ago. The casual, relaxed atmosphere (I'm comfortable there in anything from jeans to a suit) always makes us feel welcome. Scott and the rest of the gracious staff, from the waiters to the valets, always make our visits a pleasant experience.
As nice as they all are, though, I'm really there for the beef. Their pepper steak is wonderful, melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The only way to improve on it is to pair it with their garlic mashed potatoes and smother them both with their heavenly cognac pepper sauce. (Their prime rib ain't bad either!)
We go to Kirby's on Greenville to celebrate all our special occasions, from birthdays, to raises, to Valentine's Days, to Thursdays.
We've been to Pappas and, unbelievably, neither one of us could finish the over-cooked steaks. (We won't go back.) III Forks was great, but it was the most expensive meal we've EVER eaten. (We can't afford to go back.) The Palm has great atmosphere and good food. (We might go back.)
Kirby's on Greenville has been our favorite for over 10 years. Casual (or formal) atmosphere, great service--from the valets to the roving managers--incredibly delicious food, such as pepper steak with garlic mashed potatoes all smothered in cognac pepper sauce. I'd like to try their other stuff, but I can't go to Kirby's and not eat a steak! (We will go back over and over and over...)
Del Frisco and by all means Kirby's in Plano or on Greenville in Dallas. A must try is the pepper filet at Kirby's. It melts in your mouth.
Rodeo Grill Brazilian Steakhouse, 3427 Trinity Mills Road, a great new chariscurria.
Brazilian Guilherme Marchi,No.1 bull rider in the world, is the owner. His wife, Patricia is manager.
www.rodeogrillmarchi.com
How can you rank steakhouses in the DFW and use Dallas as the beacon? If you want real steak in a real steakhouse, go to Cattleman's in the Fort Worth Stockyards. From the tasty salads to the melt in your mouth rolls to the steaks that taste like they were cooked by angels, this steakhouse is the best in the DFW, if not the best in the state.
Del's in Ft. Worth is the best hands down. The avacado goddess dressing, the unbelievable spinach supreme, and the best rib-eye in DFW, and my wife will argue the best filet in DFW. And don't forget Del's Delight! 20+ trips and I've never been disappointed! Thanks Del.
My vote goes to Kirby's on Greenville Ave. Great food and atmosphere!!
It's not a true Steakhouse but Hibiscus has some great steaks. My favorite is The Palm. Whether it's a quiet dinner with my wife, a business deal, or a big group party, The Palm is simply the best and more importantly, the most consistent.
Unbelievable that Perry's is not on your list! The steaks melt in your mouth with flavors that are to die for. They are served by the most friendly, professional people in an atmosphere that will draw you back time and time again, and the sides and desserts are fabulous!!
Wow, you think Kirby's solicited some of their fans to post on the blog?? Just maybe?
Al Biernat's! Enough said...you can end the discussion now.
Kirby's on Greenville is the top on my list. The aged beef is melt in your mouth along with impeccable service! As Rachel Ray would say, "Yumo!"
Al Biernat's is my wife and my choice among several great steakhouses in Dallas.
Kirby's is by far the best. I've been to every steak house in Dallas and that place has something unique about it. If ou haven't tried I defintely reccommend.
BLT Steak! I'll admit, the service was rough the first few times I went there (in January) but it's been soooo much better since. My wife kept dragging me back for melon and dill gin swizzles and popovers and our patience paid off! The best mac n cheese in town!
Kirby's Steakhouse (Greenville Ave.) not only serves the best steak, it has a superb house salad dressing that no other restuarant in Dallas has. Also, they serve up great ambience and super service.
KIRBY'S BEST ALL ROUND. STEAKS AND SERVICE.
GREENVILLE AVE.AND THE BEST SALMON ON A CEDAR PLANK IN THE CITY.
I vote for Kirby's in Southlake as the BEST Steakhouse in the DFW Area.
Park Cities Prime has a rich and relaxing atmosphere and I enjoy my flavorful steak and delicious sides more each time I return. I usually begin with the melt-in-your-mouth mozzarella salad and I ALWAYS end my meal with the warm chocolate Lava cake. The delightful piano player only adds to the already perfect meal.
I have always thought Bob's and Del Frisco's was overrated...Kirby's has great food and you can converse without having to scream until you're hoarse.
I am the marketing director for Kirby's (one guy, no firm, sorry!) All I can say is that I am overwhelmed! All we did was let our "customers" know about this blog..wow! What an honor to be on a blog such top notch steakhouses (i.e. Nick n Sam's). Thank you for all the comments and good luck to all our stellar company!
RS
For steaks I go to Kirbys, I started with the original 70 restaurant till now, best steaks.
DEL FRISCOS AND BOBS. Ive eaten everywhere else and those two are tops.
Also, Maguires on the Tollway does a mean Steak au Poivre!
Absolutely positively the VERY best is Mr G's at the Hyatt at DFW airport. Where else can you get a superb steakhouse that saets only 44 people with a staff of 8 people to wait on you in a private dinning atmosphere like your grandfather's library! They have over 10-20 years experience apiece on the staff and only are open Monday thru Friday so you have to plan to get there on their terms. Exceptional food, world class service, and unlike any other dinning experience you can have in Dallas. It's a shame it is at the airport and goes unnoticed but that's what makes it a tucked away gem for the true steak afficianado.
Kirby's Steakhouse in Southlake Tx., Is a wonderful place to dine and entertain with great steaks and atmosphere. I hosted a business dinner meeting and was treated like Royalty. I'm a steak lover and can't remember the last time I've had a better dining experience. I'll be back and I'll tell others about the Great Experiance at Kirby's.
Are the below 'Katy' postings from the same person or what?
First one,fine.
Second, what are you comparing those 3 to, to rate them with Furrs?
Third one, how about giving the restaurant name if there is one?
Fourth one, Guess just joining the Kirby coordinated effort?

Capital Grille. Hands down!
Posted by Katy @ 12:04 PM Sat, May 10, 2008
I can't believe I'm reading this. Really? III Forks? Del Frisco's, Ruth's Chris??
You might as well list Furr's at your favorite dining spot.

I believe this is the best steak in town. Not only that but it is BY FAR the best price. You receive with every steak potatoes, sugar snap peas and

Kirby's Steakhouse in Plano has been our favorite for years. Excellent steaks,
staff, and atmosphere!
Kirby's never has a down day.
Great food, great atmosphere.
Dining here is charming, personable, and the food is fantastic.
Steak, seafood, sides - never had anything less than stellar!
Keep this quiet but Steve Fields Steakhouse in west Plano has the best steaks in the metroplex. They also have friendly service and a great lounge area. It's a gem in the neighborhood that not many people know about. I like it that way.
Hands down Kirby's is the best dining experience in Dallas. Excellent service, delicious food, great entertainment.
Argentina has great beef; however, in Dallas, Kirby's is the best when it is served on a plate......
complimented with the Mac n' Cheese..........it makes me want to go back to Buenos Aires and slap them on the buttocks until they bleed.
Kirby's should visit and show them how to prepare a delicious, heavenly feast.
If I had one last meal before the electric chair, it would be Kirby's. That says it all.
I now own my own business. However, for 18 years I was V.P. of Sales for a technology based software company. When entertaining clients who influence multi-million dollar purchases having a perfect dining experience is not something one wants to gamble on.
I have personally enjoyed many fine dining experiences in the DFW area. One that will never let you down on perfect meal and service is Kirby’s in Southlake, TX.
It is still my top choice for special occasions like family member’s birthdays and anniversaries.
III Forks is the best! The food never misses, and you always feel welcomed.
When we want a superb steak for the money - expect to pay a price. I know we will get our money's worth at Pappas Bros., it's the best. When I want a glass of champagne, I don't opt for a inferior glass of white wine. Yes it's pricey, but so are all the other top rated restaurants. You can't beat the pampering service and outstanding wine selection.
I believe that III Forks is the best steak house in Dallas. The steak just melts in your mouth and the service is excellent. I went for a friends birthday and the manager kept checking on us along with the chef. They also gave us a tour of the restaurant. I definitely think they are the #1 steak house around.
You're missing out if you've not had III Forks. Hands down the most delicious & consistently great steak I've eaten in Dallas!
I am III Forks Fan, they do it right
Ronnie's Steak House...that would be my house and no, you can't come over. Nothing better than a big thick bone-in Buffalo ribeye steak cooked over a white-hot hickory fire. That's my slice of heaven.
PERRY's is numero UNO. I have been taking clients there for years, and they always rave about how it is the best steak they have ever tasted. It is never too loud in the restaurant, unlike Bob's and Nick n Sams. My favorite steak is the Filet Michael, a beautiful 12 oz baseball cut filet topped with garlic shrimp and a bacon wrapped scallop. They even through you a free side with all steaks, something that is very hard to find in these parts. Went with clients last week and two of them ordered a "Tomohawk" Ribeye. This was definitely an eye catching steak. We even asked the GM to take pictures of us with those giant Fred Flinstone steaks and send them to us. Even those in NY were very impressed. Also, always ask for Oscar to wait on you. The most professional service I have ever received in Dallas.
2nd choice would have to be Mr. G's at DFW International. Though not a true steakhouse, they run a close second to Perry's.
Finally, Kirby's - you must be smarter about your posts. Maybe not post WE LOVE KIRBYs every minute. Perhaps spread them out so you look a little more credible. Anyways, I wouldn't rate Kirbys above Saltgrass, where the prices are much cheaper.
Keep up the good work Bill. Finally a critic who won’t succumb to the pressure or restaurant across the metroplex
The Outback Special at Outback is amazing.
My vote goes to the single operators who really care if you like your steak. My favorites from top to bottom are:
Steve Fields - Plano
Chamberlain's - Addison
Al Biernet's - Dallas
JR's - Colleyville
Rick's - North Dallas
Kirby's Steakhouse on Greenville is the BEST in Dallas!!
I am a huge fan of Authurs in Addison. Great steak, wonderful Brie cheese soup and fantastic decor. Total package
I hate to give away the best kept secret in steak houses in East Texas but its too good not to share. If you are looking for a steak house that is not in the middle of the busy city but still offers the same quality of steaks, atmosphere and flare, then take a drive down I-20 towards Wills Point to a beautiful place called Four Winds. The chef was previously at Del Frisco's for 25 years and the steaks are awesome. The long, winding driveway gives way to 100 yr old oak trees and a ranch house style establishment that looks over a 15 acre lake. Don't make the drive without a reservation. I was there two weeks ago for my birthday and the hostess was turning phone calls for reservations away as they were booked with 200+ plus for the night. I have eaten in plenty of nice restaurants in Dallas, i.e., the Palm, III Forks, Smith & Wolensky's, Bob's, etc. so don't think I am some country girl who thinks Outback is a fancy restaurant. The place is beautiful and the steaks will melt in your mouth. The country scenery is a bonus!
Goodhue's Woodfire Grill in McKinney! Yum!
If you want a steak to die for, go to a place called Canary Cafe in Addison. The atmosphere is very cozy and inviting, and the staff is top-notch. The chef will personally introduce himself to you, and see to it that you have had a wonderful dining experience. His prime ribeye will melt in your mouth, and the garlic mashed potatoes are sensational. My vote... the best - hands down!
III Forks not only has the best steak, but the veggies are awesome. Everything but the butter is make in their kitchen. I had a kitchen tour. The entire staff is friendly and the mgrs ck on you to make sure everything is wonderful. In fact they have a lady that just gives the tours and makes sure everyone has a great night. You can't beat that for an evening out.
For one of the best steaks or seafood, Kirby's is the place. My vote is for Dallas Kirby's Primerib Steak House.
Kirby's in southlake
ny strip is the best.
get the crab and artichoke appetizer!!
3 forks gets my vote & $ we love it period.
Choosing to dine at III Forks for my Mothers birthday dinner turned into the best dining experience I've ever had. As a restaurant manager myself I can appreciate the work that goes into making sure that each guest is satisfied. I wasn't just satisfied, I was excited at the thought of returning in the future. The staff was pleasant and knowledgeable, the food incredible, and the atmosphere enchanting. Floor Manager Joey Cefalu did a great job making us feel welcome and I truly look forward to many more dining experiences being better than the last at III Forks.
Mr. Simpson
To address your question sir, be smarter about what exactly? Sir, like I said, our customers are posting these, not our employees. I did let our guest know about this blog and they came out in droves. Enjoy Perrys! I agree, they do a great job too. Thank you, RS
It has to be the Kobe beef filet mignon at Nick & Sam's, then Bob's on Lemmon.
The back room of Dunston's Steakhouse on Lovers Lane is hard to beat for the money. Good food ,good people, great prices.
The 9 is the best steak I have had in a good while. But you cant beat Burgundy steak house in Denton Texas. Great atmosphere with prime select meats.
Are you kidding me? Dunston's? I could read a newspaper through the steak. As for the list, are there any great steakhouses a minority could go and not feel like they were at the Republican National Convention? Just asking.
I know this is about "upper-class" steakhouses, but my pick has to be Texas Land and Cattle in Frisco. They do a great job at half the price! Also, you can't beat their fried pickles!
Papas is tops. Chef Jim Johnson does a superb job. Not only are the steaks the greatest but also the appetizers, sides and deserts.
The ribeye at Canary Cafe is a great one but the service can be off at times the food balances it out but with so many other restaurants in town it is hard to take a gamble and make the trip out there.
PERRY'S has the best combination of all. Great food and great service along with a handsome decor. With the economy the way it is, it is hard to try some place new and expensive to only come away disapointed. At PERRY'S I know what I am getting and never disapointed I have never been for lunch but I have heard it is the best deal in town.
calamari, wedge, filet with mac n cheese finished with an apple pie and ice cream is the perfect comfort food.
Park Cities Prime was a bad idea leaving that place made me feel like i was taken advantage of both financially and gastronomically.
You would be surprised by how many steakhouse's do not use USDA Prime on all cuts. Ask your steakhouse what is Prime. Most Filet's are not.
I like III Forks because they are 100% Prime. The sides are included in the plate price which makes it the most bang for your buck!
PERRY'S!!!
Have been going to III Forks for 7 years. Got engaged there. My husband and I have never had a disappointing experience. We've always been made to feel like royalty. Every time our family visits from California, they insist we take them back there.
III Forks has our vote.
Chamberlain's has the most fantastic steaks. The wait staff is superior, sides plentiful, wine list extensive, a neat place all round. And, did I mention the steaks melt in your mouth?
I'm not part of the vast, right-wing Kirby's conspiracy, I swear... but their Greenville location was my favorite restaurant bar none for the three years I spent in the metroplex. As others have mentioned, their peppercorn filet mignon has no equal.
If it's my money on the line, Kirby's is my first choice. If someone else is paying, Al Biernat's just squeaks by.
Bill - Why not show some love to a local steakhouse. Pappas Brothers, Capital Grill, Morton's, BLT, Del Frisco's (Yes I know they are started in Dallas). Surprised you did not put Ruth Kris and Lawry's on your list. Those chains offer a nice bang for your buck, but go with a Dallas born steakhouse.
I will agree with everything that you said about Al's, but Nick and Sams is very overrated. Maybe you should give Perry's a try. I would put it right up there with those national chains and Mr. Biernat's. Steaks are always worth the price, there isn't that nose in the air feeling that you get from other steakhouses, and their menu always has so many choices. My wife and I love to sit in one of their booths. It feels like you are in your own private restaurant. If you are really lucky, famous, or perhaps a restaurant critic, they might even put you into one of the booths enclosed by a sheer red curtain. The perfect romantic evening. Love the blog Bill.
Del Frisco's has always been my favorite. But, as of late, my new favorite is the Old Hickory Steakhouse at the Gaylord Texan. The artisan cheese cart they have is wonderful.
I love Perry's for the always-perfect steaks and the wonderful fish and seafood options, which really are as much a specialty of the house as steaks. The sides and desserts are consistently amazing too.
Our family loves Cool River in Las Colinas. Their USDA Certified Black Angus steaks rival any other restaurant in the DFW area! Steak Oscar with bernaise sauce melts in your mouth. They don't do alot of advertising yet their dining rooms are full at lunch and dinner! Their side dishes are amazing as well--6 cheese scalloped potatoes and white cheddar chive cream corn are superb. Try it--YOU'LL LIKE IT! GUARANTEE!Wait staff excellent! Located at MacArthur and Hidden Ridge.
Being in the buiness of entertaining out-of-town clients I have been to 100's of steakhouses and fine dining establishments all over Texas. As far as service, ambiance, and food quality my top 3 are:
1. Del Friscos-never had a meal that didn't knock the socks off my clients.
2. Al Biernet's
3. Nick & Sam's
It's hard to rank these three b/c they are all great but after careful consideration this has to be my pick for the top three.
I see the result of the Kirby's campaign above and all I can say is that food can be very good there, but come on guys...you aren't in the class with the big boys. That new location in the Woodlands might come a bit closer but frankly that Greenville location is a little run down...and the service is average. Granted I haven't been to the other locations but in our admittedly snooty "fine dining community," Kirby's would never even make the list of steakhouses that my associates would take someone that we would like to impress. No offense intended ladies and gents, just an honest observation.
However, as far as variety, number, and overall quality of steakhouses Dallas is the best city nationwide period.
This blog proves how passionate people are about restaurants. I don't think this should be a forum to criticize other's suggestions. People have different pallates and different perspectives on what's good to them based on different factors like affordability, atmosphere, quality, etc. There are many great choices for steak lovers in this area, and we should rejoice that we have so many to choose from.
I've spent the last 25 years working at a steak restaurant and selling many of them their products and I can tell you, this is the best beef city in the nation. There are so many great suppliers and great people working to make it that way.
As for Robert on his comment on my families place, Dunston's, I can't speak for the clientele, but Mama Dunston is a big "Yellow Dog", so give 'em another chance!
The best steak I have ever eaten was at Big Buck's (attached to Bass Pro Shop) in Grapevine. I want my steak rare, and they have categories on their menus of how you want your steak cooked. My choice is blue. The steak was as rare as I like it, and I could cut it with a fork. yum yum
(Usually, I order a rare steak elsewhere and have to send it back because they just don't believe me that I want it very rare...even though I say it again and again)
What about Rick Stein's? I was there last night and while all of the places listed above have good food, Rick's by far has the best service!
III Forks: Food & Service!!!!!!!!!!
Kirby's is my husband's favorite for prime rib. He won't go anywhere else.
I've had the filet twice at Pappas Bros. and it was the best I've ever had both times.
I think Chamberlain's is hard to beat.
We had the WORST experience ever at Bob's in Plano.
Did you know that Del Frisco's opened on Lemmon Ave years ago then he sold the place to Bob after Bob learned exactly what do to from Del. Then Del moved to Belt Line, soon he sold the place to Chamberlain's, do you see a patern yet? Then he moved to Spring Valley and sold the name and all. When he went to re open he had a new name III Forks, then sold to Gene Street. See the patern? All learned from Del. These are all very similar steakhouse's except for one thing, at III Forks you get your sides included with the price of your steak! Better deal.
The Keg for me! Love it Love it Love it! We love it in Plano, we love it in Irving, we loved it when we visited Denver.
Melt in your mouth prime rib...classy atmosphere...great wine...
mmmm mmmm mmmmmmmmmm YUMMY!
Their lobster's great too!
There isn't a steak house anywhere that can grill a steak better than I can. I guess that would make MY house the best steak house in the DFW area.
Kirby's is hard to beat. The food is excellent. I have had the pepper steak on many occasions and it is always perfect. I do not think that I have ever had a better crab cake. The service on every visit has been consistently top notch, which is what you would expect from this price range of restaurant, but not what you always get at other steak houses. The sommelier does an excellent job of finding wines that fit my taste and he also does not try to just force the most expensive wines on the group. I have been too many high end Steak Houses and at the end of the day, I always prefer to return to Kirby’s…
I noticed in the Guide today you have something that is VERY INCORRECT! Dee Lincoln was never a Co Founder of Del Frisco's! Dale and his first wife founded Del Frisco's and Dee was not around!
I entertain on business quite often, steak is usually on the list and since I love wine, we like to entertain clients at III Forks. It never fails, the chef always visits the table and chats, our guests are always impressed by that......love that. Also, I love the creamed corn and III Forks salad so much I pick it up and bring it home to include in my Thanksgiving dinner.....shhhh, don't tell my mom, she really thinks I make it.
Two to three times a month I am in dallas for my company. My wife joins me from time to time and we have dined at almost every Steakhouse mentioned in this survey and our favorite is Sullivans on the tollway. We both love the wine selection and I love their Cajun ribeye. My wife and I enjoy finishing our evening in their bar downing a few martinis while listening to live jazz. All in all it's just our favorite place
I am quite a steak Connoisseur, and have eaten them in steakhouses all around the country. Ruth's Chris by far has been consistenly the BEST! I was not impressed with Del Frisco in Dallas. I tried III Forks ONE time, and they were practically WORTHLESS!! For a decent steak that isn't as high priced, TX Land & Cattle is pretty decent. I can see from the places listed here, however, that I have several I need to visit!
Villa O - The Best Patio and happy atmosphere. My friends and I are enjoying the food, music and friendly service. It leaves me with a taste of happiness!! Kudos to Villa O,
I like many of the places listed above an in other's comments, but what about Rick Stein's Steakhouse in N. Dallas (tollway @ Frankford). Excellent steaks, seafood, service, atmosphere. Always friendly.
Randy's Steakhouse - If going out for a steak dinner is a special treat, so it'd better be good - go to Randy's steakhouse in Frisco off main street. The owner learned from Del Frisco and has improved from that tenfold. You will become a regular and the others will become high priced & disappointing experiences from that visit on.
All very interesting comments. Bob's in Plano is good for signing contracts or movie making but the lighting is so high you can't have a romantic dinner. III Forks lost my business when a waiter tried to pawn off another wine after I place our wine order. Then we ended up with someone else's check and it took 30 minutes to get straighten out. Amateur hour. Rick Stein's gets our steak business now. Never a glitch in food or service. The filet mignon with pepper sauce is outstanding. You can throw away the steak knife and just cut it with your fork.
Pappa Bros definitely!!
I've been to Bob's, BLT, Ounce, Morton's, The Palm, etc...and NOTHING beats Rick Stein's in North Dallas. Rick is the best and it's an absolute must.

Great article in todays Guide. I think Dallas' Steakhouses can rival any other city in America. Having to compete against the best has made us a better restaurant. It's obvious there are a lot of different opinions on who is the best, but the best part is there are plenty good ones to choose from. Thanks Dallas for 15 great years.
The best steak I've had since I've been in Texas (and probably ever) was at Four Winds Steakhouse in Wills Point. Probably too far from Dallas to be considered, but it was perfectly cooked, seasoned, and priced! If you find yourself in the area, or are wiling to travel 30 minutes for a great steak, give it a try.
Regarding the list, I like Bob's and Pappas. Nick and Sam's should take a major hit for being the loudest restaurant in Dallas.
I have been to them all, and I love most. But I just had the BEST Ribeye I have ever had, and it was at, drumroll please, the Hard Eight BBQ in Coppell. Best ever, bar none, and half the price. Kids ate ribs at half price (weekday 4-7) so total meal for four cost lest than one steak at the Bob's of the world. You must try it, and I hear the porkchop is too die for!
My two favorite steakhouses are Bob's and Nick and Sams and I like each for very different reasons. Nick and Sams offers a wide variety of entrees and appetizers other than steak, and they put alot of thought into their seafood dishes. Plus who wouldn't love free caviar?
But when comparing the quality and flavor of specific items side by side, Bob's gets my #1 vote 90% of the time. The steaks melt in your mouth, and their garlic mashed potatoes as well as their cesar salad are unrivaled.
As far as service and atmosphere goes, I prefer Bob's friendly laid back environment. Nick and Sams can be a little pretentious and over the top sometimes, and for me its all about the food.
Also, I'm pleased to see nobody mentioning N9NE on here. That place is beyond ridiculous Those people need to head back to Vegas.
I am astounded that Perry's was not included as one of the top steakhouses...Most of the highend places serve 'prime' beef, but there's something about the Perry's filet that will blow you away..Not to mention the awesome sides and seafood selection
I am a regular steakhouse customer, and for my money there is none better than Nick and Sam's...Del Frisco's is pretty good, Three forks is not that great, and Perry's gets my vote for worst for inconsistency and poor service...I've been to Perry's dozens of times and never ever been acknowledged by a greeter, waiter, or manager as a good customer so my business is going elsewhere..Also, I enjoy the steaks at Capital Grille very much as well
my top three: III Forks, Bob's, Perry's. most overrated: Kirby's. under the radar: JR's (colleyville).
Recently had the porterhouse at Capital Grille and was thorougly satisfied. Excellent. Bob's Plano was good, but nothing to rave about. Dallas location better, but again, not the best. Had the Kobe Beef at Al Biernat's and it too was ok, but it didn't wow me, like the price did. My wife brought a steak home for me from III Forks and it was delicious. Very unimpressed with Ruth Chris. Had Papa Bros during a business lunch with set menu for 40 people. Don't remember it being the best. Perry's too was not memorable. So, Capital Grille wins out for now. Honorable mention goes to Randy's in Frisco. Very nice steaks that give the big boys downtown a run for their money.
