I care not a whit if Barefoot Bubbly sells a single yellow, pink or blue bottle in Dallas. Why? Because some enterprising marketeer decided it would be a clever move to call this California sparkling wine "Champagne," as in the famous region in France that produces real Champagne. What a way to undercut the efforts worldwide that have gone into identifying and protecting appellations (unique growing areas), including those dear to Gallo, which is responsible - or should I say irresponsible - for this wine. This move undercuts any credibility the wine family might have had and calls into question all their high-minded talk about stewardship, sustainability, fine winemaking. Yada, yada, yada. All to push a cheap bubbly. For that price point - about $10 - you can have a nice little Italian prosecco or Spanish cava. Try one. You'll like it. |
