Apparently, Oprah's on a 21-day detox plan. It involves staying away from animal products, caffeine, alcohol, sugar and gluten. What will she eat? As you probably guessed, she'll be telling everyone. This time, it's by blogging.

Sigel's discounts Allen Brothers prime steaks

If you're a connoisseur of red meat, you know that Allen Brothers USDA prime steaks get seared up at some of the best steakhouses across the nation. They're pricey at retail, to say the least. Sigel's, the only local source, is discounting them 10 percent today through Monday for your Memorial Day grilling pleasure.

That's not a huge discount, but it's good for a gallon or so of gasoline per steak. At least, that was true at this posting. Sigel's has them at four stores: Sigel's Elite (209 N. Fitzhugh at Cole), Sigel's Addison (15003 Inwood), Sigel's Greenville (5757 Greenville, across from Old Town) and Vin Classic Wines (The Shops at Legacy, Plano, on the north side of the street).

Kroger discounts Copper River salmon

9:50 AM Thu, May 22, 2008 |
Kim Pierce   E-mail   News tips

Can you say "loss leader"? Starting Friday, Kroger Signature stores will offer Copper River salmon for $24.99 a pound. This, at a time when seafood wholesalers are telling me we should brace for prices in the mid- to high 30s. That's $35 and up per pound. So Kroger's price is a relative steal. What does Kroger get out of it? They get you into their store and hope that once you're there for the prized, short-season fish, you'll find something else irresistible to take home for your Memorial Day food fest.

Why all the fuss over this fish? The salmon have just finished fattening up for their journey upstream to spawn, so the flesh is as rich as it gets. The flavor is spectacular, and the fats are the good kind (omega-3s) your body needs. The catches are also meticulously monitored so that the stocks are never overfished. In fact, fishing takes place in designated windows. After each window closes, the fish are counted. When and whether another window is opened depends on the count.

Top Chef 4: Restaurant Wars, baby

Aw, yeah. Just when viewers were convinced that the much-loved Restaurant Wars challenge had been replaced by a wedding catering gig this year, along come the dueling restaurant concepts after all. This episode went quickly (I wish they'd made this one, rather than Wedding Wars, the extra-long installment), but it was one of the most satisfying of the season thus far.

Spoilers begin the very first sentence after the jump.
