I agree with your choice of Brothers as currently holding the top spot. The best I have ever had was the old Hendersons location on Thomas at Hall Street.
The neighborhood was rough, but at the time I was driving a taxi, and would simply turn my meter on before rounding the corner to the "cab stand" located right in fron of their door, and explain to those gathered on the sidewalk I was on a run to pick up some "bird." Brothers is as close to that as I have found.

First Tex Mex, now fried chicken. I have to say, these are the kind of features I really look forward to reading in the Dining section. Nice take, Bill.

Great report...let's just hope the DMN paid for a 30 day membership to 24 Hour Fitness, or we won't have Bill around much longer. We've always favored Bubba's, but are going to have to give Brother's a try.

How much weight did you gain during this endeavor?

Well done, Bill. 'Hope you've been able to finally lick your fingers clean. Your mention of Dean's "paper-bag shook" chicken reminded me of the way my Texas born-and bred mother made hers. She used flour, pepper and Lawry's seasoned salt (we live in California). And after she skillet-fried the chicken in a little oil, she added water to the skillet, covered it and steamed it the rest of the way. This gave it less of a crust, more of a coating. So it wasn't fried chicken as we know it. But it sure was good.

I agree, I love these types of reviews. The best I have ever had was Stroud's in Kansas City. Their tagline is "We Choke Our Own Chickens" However Bubba's and Celebration are very close. Thanks for your work.

We moved from Dallas almost eight months ago; I really miss that quick five-minute drive to Brothers on Sunday nights when we didn't want to cook, snacking on fried okra as we drove home . . . the scent of fried chicken that lingered in the car for days after.

State & Allen in Uptown makes delicious fried chicken & waffles. Sunday brunch only, though -- wish that they served it all week!

Really great work, Mr. Addison!

Brothers is the best. Don't forget to get sides of okra and cream gravy. Can't beat those little bundt cakes they have either.

Thanks Bill for nudging me to an early lunch and a trip to Pollo Campero. It had been too long since I'd been back. Next time I'll try their new grilled chicken.

I'm a great fan of Pollo Campero. I especially like their crispy and, not greasy chicken tenders. I'll stop there for lunch whenever I am close to their North West Hwy. location. Also, their fried plantains are are a great change from fries.

As a native Mississippian who's lived throughout the South (and dined on many a fine bird), I don't see what all the fuss is about regarding Brother's. It's always greasy and burnt-tasting (even the photo tells us so!) Maybe y'all like that kind of thing, but where I'm from, the skin has to be golden and crisp with just a hint of pepper and the chicken wonderfully tender. So far the best example of true Southern fried chicken is at Mama's Daughter's Diner. Go try it!

Thanks for your report on the fried chicken situation in Dallas. I would agree just about 100%. Those are some of the best chicken places in the state. Bill, you throw down like a local on your FC knowledge and you should be commended. Two chicken suggestions outside of Big D. One is Gills in San Marcos, Texas and the other is Kim Son's in Houston. The garlic freid chicken at Kim Son's is off the chart. I wish we had a Kim Son's in Dallas, can you make a call?

Bill,
Perhaps I missed it, but what about the chicken and waffles from Ovation in Fort Worth? The greens and an extra side of black eyed peas will not leave you wanting! Not to mention the live jazz.

Great report...but you overlooked a not-so-under-the-radar restaurant that serves excellent FC. Hattie's in Oak Cliff serves terrific southern foods, the FC is awesome, and the atmosphere is hard to beat.

Try Raising Cane's fried chicken "fingers" - locations in North Dallas & Louisville.
