MGM Grand - Joël Robuchon-Vertical Garden.jpg

Six weeks or so ago I mentioned on the blog that I was eating my way through Vegas. Here's the report, to be published in print in this weekend's Travel section. I made it to 13 restaurants in 5 days and wrote about 11. Next week, I'll augment some of those dispatches, particularly from the swankier spots that left me with much more to say than the print space allowed me to write.

In 1991, a 60 Minutes story suggested that red wine might responsible for keeping French rates of heart disease low. Wine & Spirits magazine's 2008 annual restaurant wine poll suggests that news had some long legs: That year, 60 percent of wine ordered in white-tabelcloth restaurants was white. By 2000, the stat had flipped to 60 percent red wine, a trend that's held steady every since.

Keep reading for other survey findings, including the top 10 most popular producers on wine lists.

Check out Guide's roundup of some local Irish pubs here. It lists both the most interesting Irish menu item and the least traditional menu item at each (jalapeño-flavored Zapps potato chips, anyone?).

Also, find out what they've got going on on St. Patrick's Day. What are you going to do to celebrate?

Stalking the elusive rhubarb

Rhubarb makes only rare, seasonal appearances in our area, and my guess is there are lots of displaced Northerners for whom this is comfort food. If that includes you, make your way to Tom Spicer's 1410 Market.

His latest e-blast says he's got rhubarb in from Oregon. He says this shipment of the tart, crimson vegetable isn't stringy, has a buttery texture and was grown organically. He also has other items grown closer to home: lettuces, herbs, watercress. His store is at 1410 Fitzhugh, a few doors away from Jimmy's Food Store at Bryan and Fitzhugh.
