March 6, 2008To my thinking, the Savor Dallas International Grand Tasting is the best event of its kind: so many great restaurants gathered in one place putting out best bites, and wine and spirits flowing from producers great and small. If you get a chance, stop by and say "hi" to former Texan Jim Collins, who grew grapes in Menard, Texas, for 11 years before heading west. "My kids think they're Texans," he says. Now he husbands grapes and wine for Frei Brothers Reserve, a Gallo acquisition of an old California brand. But you can call him a wine grower. "There's a psychological transformation you make when you become a wine grower," he said at dinner tonight. "You're truly growing wines in the vineyard, not just growing grapes." He'll be pouring the newest vintages, which show lucisous fruit. Be sure to grab a taste of his Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, a small-production wine that rarely makes it to retail. No wonder. It's bold, dark fruit swathed in soft tannins with plenty of backbone. No limp-wrist pinot, this. It's 7 to 10 p.m. at the Plaza of the Americas Westin; $125 a person. Collins will also talk terroir at the "Meet the Winemakers" seminar Saturday. With him was his son, Tannahill, aka "T," a kindergartener on spring break. Tim calls the fest "spectacular, a four-day bender. Everybody was there, from Paula Deen and her kids to Giada [De Laurentiis], Rachael Ray, Mario [Batali]." Emeril, Bobby, Rick, Tyler, Tony, Cat, Morimoto -- you name them, the Food Network personalities were there. "And of course Dean [Fearing] and Kent [Rathbun]," as well as the Mansion's John Tesar, the Mercury Grill's Chris Ward, and almost every other American chef you can name.
