March 3, 2008In among the blizzard of comments following my authentic chicken-fried steak story with video was a plea for a good fish sandwich. I'm drawing a complete blank. Now fish tacos are another deal. I'm thinking we have lots to offer there, like Sea Breeze Fish Market and Grill in Plano. Anyone got a good recommendation for either a sandwich or tacos? The entry "Got fish sandwich?" is tagged: food Fans of the Dr. Seuss classic Green Eggs and Ham might be tickled to find out they can probably find a close approximation to green eggs and ham in IHOP's Mayor's Breakfast , featuring a humorous play on the Seuss classic with eggs scrambled with spinach. The dish is one of four in an IHOP promotion associated with the upcoming movie Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! The animated flick, inspired by the 1954 Dr. Seuss book, is scheduled to open March 14. Other whimsically named items include Who-Cakes (named after the folks populating a speck of dust) and Beezlenut Splash. The entry "'Horton'-themed dishes at IHOP" has no entry tags.
No, I'm not on some legislative rant. The timing of this entry on the heels of the federal wine rule stuff is purely coincidental. That said, if you care whether small local farmers who sell their wares at community markets get a level playing field vis-a-vis big commercial farms, take a moment to read Minnesota farmer Jack Hedin's op-ed piece in The New York Times. He explains how, from a small farmer's point of view, the pending farm bill will squeeze his ability to provide locally grown fruits and vegetables at a time when demand for these is skyrocketing. He says big agri-business in California, Texas and Florida is behind what he views as a push to suppress competition. As always, legislators need to hear from real citizens, not just lobbyists, on these issues. So if the piece moves you, click below and do your part. If you want to comment to legislators, e-mail Tom Harkin, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, or ranking member Saxby Chambliss directlly. For the House Committee on Agriculture, you can e-mail the committee direct. The house farm bill also has its own home page. Update: The Dallas Morning News ran the farmer op-ed on Wednesday. Read it here. The entry "Farmer: Bill could undercut small organic growers" is tagged: food |
