New reviews: Shish, Cafe R+D and Pho Delavie

Shish, Cafe R+D, Pho Delavie
This week, Restaurant Critic Bill Addison reviews Shish, the upscale Turkish restaurant from the same people who own the fast-food Turkish place called Selim's Doner House.

The other new reviews are of Cafe R+D, a University Park casual eatery from the company that runs nearby Houston's, and Pho Delavie, a Vietnamese spot in Plano Dallas that serves pho, of course, plus Saigon crepes and other favorites.

That Pho Davie address looks like it's in City of Dallas, not City of Plano.

I've been 2 Cafe R+D a couple of times; First time a burger and fries and it was fine, much like Houstons. Last time I had the pork carnitas sandwich with potato salad as recommended by the waiter and both were very institutional..a big let down at $15.00. I'll be going bacck to Houston's where I always get good value.

Donna: You're right. It is in Dallas. That's my mistake, and I will correct that today. Thank you for pointing it out.

I have frequented Cafe R+D several times now , and feel it exhibits the epitomy of a great neighborhood restaurant. I always have great service and good food. It is consistent, just like Houston's. It is nice to have a "to the point" menu at times, after flipping through pages of menus elsewhere!

Lawson, You went for Vietnamese and didn't try the Bun (pronounced 'boon')? Pho is great on a cold day but around here the cool, noodle salad of bun is wonderfully refreshing. Yet no mention of it here. I suppose I shall try it myself and write my own review.

Houston's a good value?? Give me a break. Houston's charges $13 for a Burger and Fries and $16 for Chicken Strips and Fries and over $30 for a steak. That is not a "good value." I don't get the fascination with that place where people will wait several hours to eat there. I'd rather go to Snuffers for good burgers and any number of great steak houses for a steak.

I have visited R&D and while it's good and simple, I'll stick to Houstons, which is one of the best values in town.

Monica, "value" does not mean the same thing as "cheap". There are certainly cheaper restaurants in town, but for the quality and consistency of the food and the service, it is a value. The grilled chicken salad and the club sandwich are, to me, worth more than they charge and that is value.

I'm a big fan of Firefly restaurant and lounge in Addison. I was wondering why this restaurant hasn't been review since they opened last summer?

Hey, George: A review of Firefly is coming soon, be on the lookout ...

My husband and I love Firefly too. I know it's an import from California, but it's sooo nice to have something good in Addison that isn't owned by Brinker - and has a little flair to boot.

Rick,

I certainly understand the difference between "value" and "cheap." And there are some things I really like about Houston's like their salads, the setting, and the service, but I wish someone could explain to me how they justify charging 16 bucks for plain ol' chicken strips. They should at least be honest about it and put it on the menu so people can see how much they're charging and how much they've raised the price in the last year. The California Salad and 1/2 Roasted Chicken are much better deals for the price. It may not seem like much to those with unlimited funds, but some of us actually have to watch our pennies keeping those kids in college so I just don't like feeling ripped off when I get the check.

Hey, how come only 2 of the weekly 3 reviews are actually printed in the Guide? Or am I missing the 3rd one somehow? Just wonderin'....

Posted by Shannon Sutlief @ 12:24 PM Fri, Feb 29, 2008

Carol: One review a week is a Collin County review. That review only runs in the Collin County edition of the Guide, which is four pages bigger than the regular Guide and contains that extra review and a few events happening in Collin County. We run every review and event online.

I agree predominantly with Lawson's review of Pho Delavie. If you stick with appetizers and soups (and a handful of other interesting dishes on the menu), I'd rate this spot as one of the best "Pho" spots in Dallas (3 stars for food from me). Attention to detail in the preparations, as well as the freshness of the various accoutrements, make me want to drive out of my way to slurp at Pho Delavie.
